WOW how did you make it form needles? Because no matter how gently or at what angle I put in a seed the solidification just closes in, instead of forming needles.
@trasuranic Umm i'm guessing he just had it superaturated then added a seed crystal in it. Much like with water you can cool it below 32 degrees and it can remain in liquid form. Until it comes in contact with an ice crystal or you disturb it enough for a crystal to form.
@GhostInTheShell29 see my other video to see what normally happens if i let the fluid cool to room temperature, the entire flask instantly solidifies. in order to do what i did in this video, i had to slowly cool it on a hot plate, yet still keep it warm, and then also experiment in diluting the mixture with small amounts of water, so that the reaction would not occur as fast. its certainly not as simple as you say, however i did drop the seed crystal in at the end.
You have to get the solution pretty darn hot in order to saturate it. Then you have to let it cool. But once you touch the solution, it'll start to crystallize and generate a considerable amount of heat.
@ozzychvz they would be solidified into it, also it would go a lot faster, i had to tweek this reaction to slow it down and make crystals like that, the normal reaction is much faster, and does not have such nicely defined crystals. also, the crystalization is exothermic, so your buddy that you stick in the bathtub will likely be cooked to death as he is locked inside the crystal...ha ha ha
@michaelfreudiger actully man i think it doesn't get that out they use this in tic tok heat pads(i think thats the name ) yes it gets but its not like AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! hot more like ooooo thats nice hot
@michaelfreudiger Hey, i need to know, Im doing this "Hot Ice" for my science fair, and i need a variable, so why not amounts (ML's) of water? I need one amount of ML of water that wont work, and 3 others that crystallize fast, Slow, and one that only crystalizes into a Slush. Thanks! Please respond!!
check out my other video where it is "fast". i had to play with the dilutions here to make this "slow". compare the two and tell me your interpretation of fast afterwards.
its easy to just add the water and then add sodium acetate carefully until you can see that the water cannot dissolve anymore than just filter the undissolved crystals out
Does anyone have an approximation of the water to sodium acetate ratio?? I have tried this several times and it just won't work and I don't want to end up wasting all my sodium acetate.. Could there be any other reason why this won't work besides the mixture being too diluted??
You just keep adding sodium accetate to the boiling water and stir untill the accetate cant dissolve anymore (Super saturated). Then you filter out whatever didnt dissolve.
actually...you dont, you just melt the sodium acetate crystals. i had to add a few drops of water to create a little "stability" so that i could control the mixture with a seed crystal.
What do you mean? It makes complete sense. It's simple chemistry of a supersaturated solution of sodium acetate. Im in 6th grade and i understand this.
to make soidium aictate just add baking soda and vinager in a cub until it stops fizzing when it stops fissing boil the vinager and baking soda solution untill all of the water is desolved and you will have sodium acetate. and to make the ice just boil sodium acetate with water until the sodium acetate desolves. then cool that of and touch it and you have ice yea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :*

was the solution pressurized, allowing it to be supersaturated, then by equalizing the pressure it returned to its solid state or did you use heat?
