  • Not all are underrated but it does happen. Happened alot back in the muscle car era. Ive seen LS1 Camaros dyno at 360rwhp but ive also seen them dyno at 280 rwhp.

  • Most cars are underrated for horse power due to the fact that evn the smallest sand casting differences can make a huge difference and the first castings are what they use to get their factory numbers and later castings usually have differences that can only be made with a micrometer and cause huge differences in output !

    No doubt. & thats was under rated for insurance companies.

    Car & Driver had an article in 1991 that showed 300+ on their dyno & it was a showroom fresh truck.

  • lol....my 4 door 1994 S-10 Blazer(4.3 Vortec) rated at 205 hp. can waste a Volvo 850.hahaha.You seem to forget Mercedes,BMW,Jaguar,Bentley and SAAB all made 4 doors that would kill your car back in 94. The Syclone/Typhoon had 320 hp.They rated them at 280 for insurance reasons and to protect the Corvette.Hell....the 94 Impala would waste a Volvo.

  • 4.3 Turbo Vortec V6 AWD. 280 HP stock. Only about 3000 made in 91-92(maybe 93). It's best if you read up on this legend of a truck.

    There's also an SUV counterpart that's called Typhoon.

  • The 280 HP thing back in the day was an EPA max. so it's likely that thing had 4oo but it was not advertised. I raced one when I had a Volvo 850 Turbo, the fastest sedan in '94, and the thing blew me away-along with all the dust on the road. I'm not playin' , when he punched it- it was like a street sweeper.

  • Well, the tires are only 16x8 Rims with 245/50/16 tires - same as standard / base-model Camaros and Trans Am, and 5.0 Mustangs. But yeah, with 4 of them it adds up to a lot of traction.

  • @Syclone0044 i grew up a BIG 5.0 stang fan,, but man,, i LOVE the syclone,, id be pretty happy with a nice typhoon also, but man, the syclone is just me as a kid,, i was 10 in 1991, and i remember the ONE time i saw one new in 1991-2,,, this dude in a GTA transam got his BELL rung by one of these,, it wasnt a long race,, maybe an 1/8 mile, but we all know how nassty the AWD is in a short run

  • Nice truck ! Last summer I was screwing around with you on Hwy 100 in my dark blue SVT Lightning. You blew me off a couple of times. My buddy sitting next to me never heard of a Syclone, he has now.

    I bolted on a few goodies since then but still no hope of keeping up with that bad 4.3.....truck flies!

  • well finally i see someone who was side by side with a syclone...

  • the syclone probable has more power than that. companies underrate some of their vehicles so the insurance isnt as expensive. a syclone has a 4.3 v6 with a turbo. a stock 4.3 has 175 HP, and the vortec model has 210 or 220 HP. so with a turbo, added to it if it was big enough and pushed enough boost, i thought they might have a little over 300. i dont know how much the turbo adds to it but however much they have they sure can move.

  • no a stock 4.3 tbi has 150 (i have one) the vortec is 190-220 depening on the year

  • my syclone is 330 hp stock, gm rated it at 280 but after dyno testing it was 330 hp

  • yeah i raced one like last week and i got burned.off the line he got me but at a roling start i pulled on him till his turbo really kicked in,we were roling round 45mph.OH i have a slightly modd 96 impala.only makin 277hp and 343 ftlbs thx to cold air intake and some bigger pipes.

    and my camaro is 350hp stock, gm rated at 300 but after dyno testing it was 350hp just like the same ls1 engine found in the corvette! it was underrated cause a lower price camaro could not have the same hp as there flagship...dum syclone owners think there the only cars that are underrated do some research and youll find out theres many many many sport cars that were underrated as well!!

  • @mattc0805 I know you said stock but is that also stock tune? Not saying I don't believe that just curious. These trucks are small but no lightweight either right still like 3500lbs. So, it's about equal to the F body in this race assuming no weight reduction etc. Hard runnin little truck. I would love to feel it launch.

  • I got a chance to test drive a Typhoon which is pretty much the same thing as a Syclone and I have never been so impressed with a car like I was with that thing. It pulled so hard and quick as shit!!

  • but majority of them when dynoed stock, have horsepower numbers passing 300. general motors and other car companies normally underrate their cars power. not so much now but back in the day.

  • Unrated mean that from factory say's a number of hp and if u put it on a dyno make more hp's than factorys numbers ;-)

  • I'm pretty sure that is to keep insuance costs down. they did the same thing to the GNX. It claimed 250 or 260 horse (somewhere around there, not exactly sure). But it made around 300 horse.
