A couple goes down to the beach to watch the stars and the crash of the comet into jupiter. He wants to share this experience with her together. With the cosmic once in a lifetime event happening above she has other ideas.

I think the theme of the song says that love/lust can be temporary and although it may seem like "everything" at the time there are circumstances which you miss out on other things going on around you which you regret later on in life.

On 1994 July 16-22, over twenty fragments of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 collided with the planet Jupiter. The comet, discovered the previous year by astronomers Carolyn and Eugene Shoemaker and David Levy, was observed by astronomers at hundreds of observatories around the world as it crashed into Jupiter's southern hemisphere. The song is about Robert and a girl waching both the comet crashing. Most fans of The Cure didn't know that Robert Smith is also an amateur astronomer.

Wow, I don't think anyone has ever so severely misunderstood a song as you did here. The song is about Bob taking the girl's virginity. "Is that it? Is that the Jupiter Show? It really wasn't quite what I'd hoped for, you know." And he replies, yes, that's it, "just a few bruises in the region of the splash."

So much for gravity.

That is Robert that the absolute height of his writing powers. But about Shoemaker-Levy crashing into Jupiter this song was most assuredly NOT.

rob smith is an amature astronomer and when this song was written in 96 a comit was crashing into jupiter and everyone excpected this huge bang but to thier dismay it wasnt so acutually thats what the song is about but like i said it means one thing to u antoer to me and another to someone else its ART a picaso @ that!!

I'm not saying the conceit of the song is not the comet--but the entire idea of metaphor and imagery seems to be lost on you.

One more example, just because it's so easy.

Is A Letter to Elise about the time he was on the beach and tried to pick up sand but there were gaps between his fingers? Wow, and that song was about the girl he knew whose eyes caught on fire! That must have been scary!
