  • Sand Dunes? I really thought it was a World War II Bomber =/

Very cool, I never saw this one on TV.

  • the bombers are back!!!

  • @Arwyroe Doobug

  • You seriously make me watch 20 sec commercial for 1 min video..

  • Come on, George "War" Bush can't think.

  • sure, cut the clip off and leave me wondering about the mating calls of sand dunes

  • whos the comedian at 0:41 ?

  • @Iamthenixsta Sean Lock

  • @Gubbywubby its rich hall

  • @KGzII Oh, yeah! It cuts to Sean seconds after, so I guess I must not've been looking at the right point of the video.

  • @Gubbywubby lol :)

  • @KGzII My bad! =D

  • @Iamthenixsta Rich Hall

  • Vuvuzailas make that noise...

  • I bloody near died when she said Kajagoogoo

  • sand dunes make noises... WHAT?!?!?

  • @jackamatyus sound is a pressure wave in air. That's all there is to it, and the presence of an "ear" is irrelevant.

  • Its vuvuzelas in the distance! Hear their roar!! Run!! RUN for your lives!!!

  • I make that sound whenn i fart in the bath.

  • The speakers

  • It sounds like the Dr Who theme through really bad speakers.

  • @KristofskiKabuki I can see where you're going... It does sort of resemble it indeed.

  • @SaleckTheDragon I think you should give your apologies to all americans... because it's when he TRIES to think :D

  • Someone got a question right on QI?

  • the aircraft in Airplane for the first sound. (which is actually the sound of a prop plane, despite the plane being a jet)

  • I wonder if that sound can be heard anywhere, because in Texas there are vast ammounts of land, and you can hear almost the same sound.

  • Wait, what? Sand dunes don't make sounds. They're piles of sand. You mean WIND on a sand dune? That would be the WIND making the sound. And how does either a sand dune or wind make the "ribbit" sound?? I am confuse.

  • @Flyborg What if a tree is blown over by the wind and no-one's there to hear it?

  • @kisbie You'd hope the poor squirrel it lands on isn't deaf.

  • @kisbie sound is our interpretation of vibrations in the air caused by an event. If nothing with the capability to hear sound as sound is in the vicinity, no sound is made.

  • @jackamatyus Very good! Extra points for being so clever. :)

  • @jackamatyus

Sound is also the manipulation of air, which does not require anyone to be there to hear it.

  • @nubzaquer It depends how you define the word 'sound'.

  • @badboyfrvr

Yeah, and we have two adequate definitions of sound here. Seems like this questions doesn't have an answer.

  • @Flyborg On that basis drums, guitars and other instruments don't make noise, the players do. This is not how we define sounds. The vibration is generated by sand grains rubbing against each other and so it is the sand which makes the sound.

  • What is with Stephen's hair???

  • vuvuzela

  • whats a sand dune?

  • @171989rachel

    A dune of sand......:P

No seriously though, it's a large pile of sand created mostly by the wind.

  • @Surtak ok thanks

  • @171989rachel it's a dune made out of sand, seriously tho, it's a hill in the desert (i think), made of sand, more or less

  • @Selinor578 ok thanks

  • Me after a curry.

  • What's happened to Stephen's barnet in this??

  • What's happened to Stephen's barnet in this??

  • @billnwot might not want to bring that up.

  • @billnwot Comments like that are shit. I think the only one that thinks like an animal here is you! You are about the most disgusting ever. Germans are human beings as everyone else. Go f*** yourself

  • I thought a didgeridoo XD

  • Flame Wars, Flame Wars... haha.

It's the wind blowing across sand dunes that makes that noise.

  • For all of those who are confused as to how the sand dunes can make this noise, just look up on YouTube "singing sand"! Depending on the location and the strength of movement, the sand makes a different pitch. The noise can be made by wind, people walking on it, etc. It's quite interesting and so far is the only QI question I have EVER known.

  • OK that the first is the sand on a windy day or something, but what kind of weather makes the sand go "quacka-quacka-quacka"????

  • I'll tell you what the first one is! It's my dad after three buritos! The second one is me at 5 trying to open the medicine bottle.

  • @QuirkyGirl12345 In Bulgaria, right now it's 05:26 AM and I'm sittin in front of my PC LAUGHIN MY ASS OFF at your comment! You, sir, are a winner! XD XD XD

    Abby: Thank you sir!

    Gibbs: Don't call me sir...

    Abby: Thank you Ma'am!

see mother, i CAN make people laugh!

    *stares blankly*

im telling them mother! I'm telling them! im telling them!

NO? okay... just a private game then........

  • @QuirkyGirl12345 I can join the game. The second line was by Hugh Dennis on Mock the Week. :)

  • @Enleuk yes!! very good!!! *claps*

  • two independent mechanisms must be at work ...squeaking sand suggests a simple mechanical explanation of sound production ...in both wet and dry sand. Sound production of booming sand appears to be related to mechanical coupling between grains". Whatever internal mechanisms exist, if sand of an appropriate grain-size and smoothness is naturally or artificially put into motion, sound will emanate and will in some instances provide an observer with vibrations which can be felt through the body.

  • I thought it was whales at first, here a video about theme though by National Geographic I found on theme: watch?v=4mbypyJjqhk

  • it's those vuvuzelas. :p

  • How the hell does a Sand Dune make those sounds? eAe Can anyone explain please? :D

  • i thought it was my dad sleeping at first

  • @VituMV Blimey i dont want to know what that squeaking was!

  • it wasn't sand dunes, it was a lyre bird

  • How the hell did he know what that sound was? lol

  • The irony is that the adverts at the beginning are half as long as the clip!

  • @DarthJedi2005 they use the extended versions for the previews

  • "Is it a bee under a sink?" LMFAO sean never fails to make me laugh

  • @0xmnmx0 Hahaha, yeah, he is quick

  • I felt all clever 'cos I knew the answer...then I remembered seeing this episode on TV :S

  • curtins

  • i actually got this one. i saw some singing sand dunes once.

  • jedaaa "fuck off with you are 1 minute vids." Must be awful for intellectuals like you.

  • @esqueritas ooooh, must be great for spelling nazi's like you. so i type to fast... gtfo

  • Should be marvellous for spelling "Nazis"

(without the apostrophe) AS you do. You do not type fast you type incorrectly. You type "to" fast? Please reply so I may extract the urine more.

  • @esqueritas funny, there is an episode of QI were stephen ripps the piss out of internet spelling police like you aaaahhhh the irony. so go ask him to exact some urine out of you.

  • BBC, fuck off with you're 1 min vids,

no wonder people steal and post full versions EVERYWERE.

  • oh dear I see you have done it again with your (or should I say "you're"). I wouldn'nt usually extract the Michael out of cabbages but as you insulted me I think you deserve it.

  • Isn't this a little like reasoning that people rob banks because the banks do not give the money away first?

  • @dantean no i just mean if thay posted 5 min vids like in this case just post the full round and everybody wins. a 1 min vid is just a piss take and fule's piracy, there asking for it. not saying its right but its the way it is.

  • @jedaaa No I figured u were just giving vent to frustration at BBC doling out such tiny, tiny morsels of this great stuff--even by network standards. Tho I can't quite get off the idea that greed is the largest motivation for theft when it comes to entertainment products, as opposed 2 food, water, or shelter). As a business decision, BBC probably figure the videos as posted whet an appetite for viewers 2 tune in that negates what they lose in piracy. I'm just guessing.

  • @dantean yeah i would agree thats there thinking too, oh the BBC & there infinite wisdom eh lol, i would understand if it was just stuff from a new season before a DVD is out but its everything thay do, pretty much all there vids on here are just useless 1 min jobs lol

  • @jedaaa If you want to be annoyed, try finding archived stuff on the BBC website--radio programs and such. They ration that stuff out like it was f'ing gold. Of course, a lot of it is gold to a certain sort of person (me). Anytime I find out someone clever had a show or radio play or interview on BBC I just know that if I go to their website to look for it I'll be wasting my time. They just don't keep stuff. Maybe it's a cost thing, also.

  • @dantean what thay do have that is very good is BBCi player . co . uk

but i think i noticed from your page your in the states? so i doubt you can use it, but im not sure.

  • @jedaaa We do get it here The best thing about it is the volume control that goes to 11! It's cool that no BBC higher-up stepped in to prevent some tech's Spinal Tap homage/visual in-joke.

  • @dantean ah thats cool coz my polish freind cant get it, and yeah i still scratch my head as too why it goes up to 11 : /

  • @jedaa It's from the movie Spinal Tap where guitarist Nigel Tufnel (played by Christopher Guest) is showing interviewer Rob Reiner that the highest volume setting on his amplifier is 11--as if the number itself were the difference rather than the fact that the knob is all the way up. Describing the scene obviously can't do justice to seeing it in the film, but that's the idea.

  • @dantean hehehe, thats pretty cool, i never did see that movie.

  • The Tardis running out of battery

  • @plasmavore lol "Wait a minute Amy i just need to pop down the store and get a few packs of double As first..."

  • @plasmavore I actually thought one of the contestants said that and I was waiting anxiously for someone to say that line. xD

  • and they got him dressed in the rags of pan...

  • My first guess wouldve been Locusts

  • lil sand dune frogs crying at night haha

  • Dude, that first one is f'ing creepy!

  • ZZZOOOMMBBBIIEEESSS!!! haha. i first heard the first sound on TV late at night while i was drifting off to sleep, and i didnt know it was a tv! scared the life out of me!

  • They both sound kind of like a washing machine.

  • i think that means your washing machine is fucked

  • Hahaha! :D

  • i recently found out the frog sound is the sound of small grains of sand vibrating inside a crack or gap in hardened sand of the sand dune, bouncing up and down is what makes the sound

  • what about sand dunes makes that clicking sound (the second sound)

  • its for mothers and younger sons only-

  • I think it's from an old Fry and Laurie skit, but I'm not sure :) I was looking to see if anyone did know.

  • Oh...:P Never heard of them either...

But I don't get the joke either :(

Can you explain it, and would you please?? :P

  • Have you never heard of Hugh Laurie ?? He is Dr House, man, you have to know him !!

As for the joke, actually there's only one real joke which is the first answer of the panel : "a bee under a sink" ..... (which definitely would make that sound) ..... the comical effect come from the stupidity of the answer !!

What s really funny, in MY opinion, is the two sounds themself and the fact there from the same thing !!

  • sand dunes make the noise because the flat side of the dune amplifies the noise of the sand smashing into eachother by up to 110 decebels. the frog sounding noise is the sound made when someone walks over the dune, the noise is projected still, even with no wind.

  • how does it make that frog noise though? im very curious about it.

  • I'm still not convinced about the frog sound, it sounds too frequent to be footsteps and is very different to squelching sand

  • the do let uknw in the ful episode

  • Is it a Bee under a sink?

  • Fat man farting in a tub i think :P

  • Comment removed

  • why dont they explain why sand dunes make that sound? its really interesting

  • well, quite interesting

  • for whatever reason theyv cut it off so ..in a way yeh, why cant they let us know? haha

  • A BEE UNDER A SINK XD

  • that oughtta be one terrifying bee!

  • for those who hate the ads click back button and then quickly forward and you may be able ot skip it

  • def. i have been a victim of these ads for the last hour or so. I'm from holland so i have to watch the most degrading, shamefull and just downright stupid adverb ever! just wanted to get that of my mind, it's depressing me...

  • your not alone xD

oftewel je bent nie de enigste gellukig =D

  • what the hell is everyone talking about, ads? these never have any ads when i watch them.

  • But they are here...seems to be dependent on what country you live in. In the Netherlands we have the ads....and always the same one.....
