That's my dad on Sax! Stephen A. Madrick -never saw him on video before! What a treat. 1945 -he was 35-went on to become Les Brown's lead sax -during WWII was sax w/ Glen Miller's US Army Airforce Band, stationed at Yale, New Haven, CT,where the band played for troops in training.Born1910, passed away in 1995& while in hospital at his last hours, he was listening to a tape of his favorite recordings he made with Les Brown Band. He's also in duet in "Once Over Lightly" but pulled from YouTube.
Did you see Doris Day in "Love Me or Leave Me?" She danced up a storm in this much touted picture. She sings and dances to "Shaking the Blues Away" a great display of her dancing, singing and gorgeous legs.
Hello MisterGoulash, I don't think so. It's just recorded as a soundie. It's not in my personal collection of more than 900 different Doris Day songs. But I haven't found all Doris ever sang on Live Radio.
Look up clips of "Romance on the High Seas" where Doris was with Jack Carson in the film and sings "It's Magic". You'll see this gal, whom I believe to be Martha Raye, and the REAL Doris in the other clip are two different people!
Hi MephisMoll, It's really Doris Day. She made definitly three soundies with Les Brown. "Lost Horizon", "Once Over, Lightly" and "Is It Love Or Is It Conscription?"
You think this is Martha Raye?? Okay.... seriously.... look up some pictures and videos of Martha. She was more of a comedienne who did weird facial expressions. She was not a lovely, elegant young ingenue as we see in this clip.
If *this* is Martha Raye then *I* am Martha Raye.
Those '40's hairstyles made a lot of ladies hard to recognize for us. Ever see any early photos of Marilyn Monroe? Of course, sometimes a little plastic surgery came into play also.
Yeah, but styles change. Those 40's hairdo's were not great. She always looked better in some version of a dutch bob. GREAT voice though. She is the prettiest woman that I've seen in the movies. Ever.
she is beautiful with any hairstyle.. i love doris!!!!! but i agree she looks alittle diff. much much younger here. i love stopping by to watch and listen to her.. thanks for sharing
Doris Day during the 1940's- Les Brown, Buddy Clark- and, more. It doesn't get any better than that. I thank the Lord for her songs. She's got to be my favorite all time singer.
Miss Day is one of the greatest vocalists the States gave.Great star ! Great lady of the screen, it is shameful Academy Awards does not give her an Oscar, she is a living legend, she is still in great health fortunately.
I love Doris early recordings, I have a lot of them. Cd tracks from the original Columbia Record Label, but also live recordings from radio in my collection. My collection contains around 700 different recordings from her whole career. Including the Bear Family Sets, different arrangments from the same songsessions are counted as one song. One of my favorits is An apple blossom wedding, with Les Brown. A nice litte tune. I love it. Sorry for my poor English.
She sounds a little like Ella Fitzgerald here, style wise and even in voice quality. It makes you think, if her career had taken a different path, would we be thinking of her as that great jazz singer, Doris Day? Still, what we have is Doris as I suppose she wanted to be. And that is good enough for me. One of the great voices of all time, in any style.
The early vocals of Doris came as a complete suprise her songs with Les Brown are far better than the later ones if you have chance to listen to her early recordings youll know why Great.
Can you name a few songs, or several, if you will, that are your particular favorites from that early period? As this song and Sentimental Journey proves, the girl had soul.
she sings with so much deep and feeling, way ahead of her time.

This is when music could be understood and people just listened and it warmed their souls.

And to think of it! She originally wanted to be a dancer. What a waste that would have been.

One thing I notice now are her eyes. She's so young, I can hardly tell. But, those are her eyes, and so pretty.

Damn, she should have been a jazz singer. What a beautiful voice and what great phrasing, but alas que sera, sera. ;)

If you want to hear Doris in a jazz setting, check out her 1960 album "Duet" from with André Previn.
