  • My thoughts exactly maxfrenzi.......Where did the "Time" go.........(No pun intended) LOL That was the stuff.....Damm... I've raised a family and back single again , LMBO

  • @Blkday64 - Partially true...there are still a lot Of Up-&-Coming Musicians/ R&B-Nu Soul & Jazz-funk bands out there that write Great New Music NOW-Today!! The problem is that Major Labels & Mainstream Radio turned their

back on Black Bands back in '98...some "Suits" decided that Urban music = Rap/Hip-hop. As a result, the Funk & R&B went Indie/Underground...They won't sign Black Bands. I think the last 2 were Toni tony tone & Mint condition( American)

  • @Blkday64 well i think its more of a rumor, those beats are pretty basic, but funky.dre and alot of producers sampled just about everything from p funk, but i know ice cube did work with george on a song or two.but rap, hiphop,r&b,jazz, etc. its all from the same pot.its just when sampling was legal anybody could loop someones song and throw a beat behind it,and hey your making music....peace brotha

  • @Blkday64 oh ive heard of it part sampler, seqencer, drum machine, but pro tools,fl studio, reasons, are kings in music making today.remember back in the day when every musician&singer recorded all at the same time. then came track machines, then seqencers,etc..all which made making music alot easier,so it was the technoliogy that changed everything. but to say dr.dre doesnt have much talent as andre cymone? think about that one

  • @Blkday64 well we dont use drum machines anymore, its all music programs,computers.samplers.but to say you dont need much talent to rap is wrong.you gotta have skills to rap, just like a singer.there good ones and bad ones.if it was that easy every fool out here would be making money from hiphop.music is music regaurdless how its made

  • These was the magic moments in those days and the music anyone could listen no rated XXX it was all about LOVE

  • GREAT VIDEO

  • In the 80's men could getaway with wearing makeup, womens jewery, jeri curls, and to some insents; womens clothing. But thats what it was like back in the 80's, to get a pretty ass female, you needed to be pretty your damd self.

  • cutem Jesse get a little satisfaction

  • I miss REAL music like this. Cut em Jesse

  • The song sounds good...

  • @ANOTHERHOLEINYOHEAD - Prince would not have done that & as you can see, Jesse can front his own situation. Besides, at that time Prince wasn't trying to have "Another Star" in his road Band....And Prince changed his bands up frequently. ( No job security)...Jesse didn't need the Revolution once he got going.

  • Jesse is King of GlamSlam!...When a woman sees herself, she drops her defenses. She does the choosing.Old school game you lames don't know about.

  • man i don't give a rats ass about the way they dressed or if they were gay and all that stupid non sense. i just loved their music and performances. this was a real band, unlike the bullshit they call music today.there is no comparison between todays music vs. old school. with the exception of a few artist of today i would'nt pay not 1 fucking penny to listen to a thug rap about his dick, bitch, ride, bling, posse, grill and any of that classless shit that they try to call music.old school forever.

  • I'm wit you mayne. It's all about the old school. Today's music is all a bunch of bullshit. I haven't heard a classic since the mid 90's. It's really too bad these kids are growing up on this spoon fed bullshit. Thank goodness for the old school. Classic music. I mean this song here is almost 30 something years old. What music today will be played in 20 or 30 years. NADA!!!! One love to the old school.

  • THANK YOU! I never quite understood my peers' fascination with that stuff (I'm 28, btw) during my later school years. It was as if they were pre-conditioned/brainwashed to go along with it which is just plain wrong, lol. At least Rick James finally woke me up to the reality of what music truly sounds like (Sorry MC Hammer, but "u can't touch this" and shouldn't have anyway). I may have been an 80s child, but I was born at a time when "old school" was still in effect. Accept NO substitutes!

  • thanks

  • i love jesse and the crue but can someone explane the drag look i noticed that in the 80's it was ok to kind of look almost like a girl..............please help me understand

  • Dude, we were wearing more makeup than your current girlfriend does...lol...but that was the thing!

Former drummer for Alex O' & Brownmark...

  • To completely understand I think you'd just have to live during that time but I'll try! It was more of a creative expression and/or a way to be theatrical. The seventies was the same way and we were just coming out of that time period. Alot of this made unisex makeup acceptable. Early hip hop and the punk scene merged which explains the fashions too. There wasn't just one look and many other styles were big. The eighties were about being over the top and unique which is why it was so fun...

  • as stated below in the comments. TODAY'S MUSIC SUCKS!!! Thank goodness for the old school. Great post NuDelic. Thank you thank you thank you!

  • thanks for the upload nudelic. this is one for the ages!

  • Is this from Solid Gold? He is sure lip synching

  • He looked damn fine doing it though, didn't he?! What?! What?!

  • I second that emotion

  • I remember this song. I loved Jesse especially in the Time. He just look so sexy to me. wonder where is he now.

  • I think Jesse Johnson was the most talented performer out of Minneapolis next to Prince. His songs were tight, his performance was on point and he could play the hell out of that guitar

  • They were tight - to play the instruments, sing and dance in sync - crazy!

Too much work for these new groups.

  • Thats what always blew my mind. That them cats played so great, looked so unique (Days of Wild, Land of The Brave!), and DANCED in sync!

And they did it live too, it still trips me off! Long lasting cool.

Interesting, the vid looks like Shockadelica era. Pure Funk.

  • First album.

  • Everyone had that style stupid..

  • It is a long way between same style to identical. But i gues to a dumb fuck like yourself they all lock the same.

  • Lol look whos talkin callen me a dumb fuck u can't spell look.. lock?? wow..

  • everybody clap your hands...i want to sing my line....

    'take me through changes

  • I love his music! Did you all know he's going on tour with The Time? Yes, yes, yes!!!!! Check out his MySpace page for dates.

  • the audio sux

  • As I see some of the video clips of 80's music and artists, I keep seeing a lot of comments being posted about the music of that era. Many of them relating how much they miss the music from that time. There really was something special about the 80's, specifically concerning the music that was being recorded. It seemed to be a time when music was colorblind. It didn't really matter whether the artist was black, white, etc., as long as the music was good. And much of it was, unlike today's music.

  • here, here..a well said post!!!

    music 2day...SUCKS...compared to then!!

    :/

  • Very well stated!

  • Man, you shoulda been in school with ME at that time! It was beautiful. Music had us all united.

  • He is better than Jimmy Page in my book!

    Check him out live.

  • jesse johnson underated guitar player

  • Oh the music from the 80's, where did the time go and what happened to the music? Those were great days!

  • There releasing a new cd soon.

  • I miss those days too man. I remember everybody had style and the music took you to a better place. The music of the 80's was the best.......It's great that we have this medium to share and remember great artist like Jesse Johnson!

  • Is it old school stuff or new material? Thank you for posting this. peace

  • @maxfrenzi They really, really, REALLY were! It seemed like this time was THE time, and always would be, and then it turned into the 90's just like that, and then all of a sudden you turn around and we're here and now, in this mess! What happened?!

  • What's Jesse Johnson doing now a days?

  • He was playing guitar for the Time last night on the Grammys last I saw him

  • God bless youtube and the general public that participates and enables memories like this to flourish. Oh my god my raging youth........

  • tight

  • wow, it has been a minute since iheard this song. i used to get clowned for liking this song..LOL!!!

  • omg!!!!!!!!!

  • you tube is tha best i been looking for shit like this jesse muthafuckin johnson love this dude

  • lol man i listen to this song alllll the time. ill be in the car bumpin this but i gotta blast Can You Help Me

  • Cool as classic cut!

  • I wore this tape out. Looks like he's palying a lefty guitar?

  • Jesse, you are still one of my fav's! The 80's were great! I miss hearing you perform live. I'm glad to see many disography's are giving you credit for the giant contribution you have made to the music/recording industry. Wishing you well and continued success... From Dawn (you may remember me as "Rad")

  • DAYUMMMMMMMM!!!! I was just looking for the original video of this and happen to click on this one FIRST!! "YOU MAKE ME CRAZY, HORNNNNNSSSSSSSSSSS!!"

  • this is 1 of my all time fav artists/gutairists. he is sooo cool!

  • That was on Solid Gold in like 85. I taped it on a vcr tape I had with a bunch of Prince, The Time, RFTW, The Family etc etc...Jesse is a badass. Time flies man........

  • Dont remind me - It surely does - thank the Lord for technology so we still have a chance to relive those memories

  • Well said...

  • why can't everyone except that artist have been influencing artist for generations. you could go back as far as little richards for inspiration, also virtually every funk musician was influenced by james brown or sly etc

  • Sorry this is the 1 & only Jesse Johnson, 4merly of the Time...The "Oh Sheila" dude is Melvin Riley of Ready 4 The World, a Prince/Time/Minneapolis soundalike band from Flint Michigan....Just goes 2 show how influential Prince was, & still is...

  • Man! Can't deny the FUNK!!!!

  • Jesse is one of the nastiest guitarists in R&B...nasty solos

  • Jesse Johnson is one of the most underrated guitarist of his time. He's able to adapt to all genre's of music.I saw him live once and I have never forgot the show.

  • firs was prince, then came morris day and then jesse johnson. they were the coolest cats of the 80's period.

  • Serious Prince and Rick James influence..that is the Oh Sheila dude! Ahh..memories from the 1980s! I remember this song! See he is saying that oh oh..

  • You have the wrong person. Oh Sheila, was performed by Ready For The World.

This is the one and only Jesse Johnson, who came along before RFTW and was the lead guitarist for The Time before leaving to go solo...

  • @ Najenn: Rick James infulence? NO WAY! Prince influence? OK Maybe a little.. but this little is 15% out of 100! By the way.. Jesse did things for artists even before he got well-known as a talented solo artist. He produced a track on Janet's Jackson second album "dream street" - and also did a great side-project called Tamara & The Seen!! - Ready For The World was a completely different Minneapolis "corner".. lead by Louil Silas Jr!

  • If the old boy was influenced by Prince then it was a Rick James influence. Check out Rick James' autobiography - Confessions of a SuperFreak. I am familiar with all the artists you are referring too especially Tamara and the Seen. You know your music. I grew up during this era in the USA, bought their albums, saw their vidoes and to me they all had a familiar midwestern/MN funk!

  • Sorry this is Jesse Johnson, 4merly of the Time...The "Oh Sheila" dude is Melvin Riley of Ready 4 The World, a Prince/Time/Minneapolis soundalike band from Flint Michigan....Just goes 2 show how influential Prince was, & still is...

  • pure prince influences can be heard

  • I loved this song I'm glad somebody had this on youtube to bring back the memories for me.

  • I remember this show on Xmas eve of 1985 they also played "Can You Help Me" also on that show was Teena Marie, RFTW and a few others celebrating the year's best black music.

  • i was crazy about this song i went out and album

  • Love the bridge in this song!

  • CORRECTION !!!.... its JESSE JOHNSON'S REVUE ... NOT Review ..... and this song is " Be Your Man " .. Released on A&M Records 1985 / Manufactured by Columbia House / CBS Inc New York NY ..... now ya'll can go blast the internet and try to find this .... ( still got my copy .... 22 year classic ) KEEP THE GOOD MUSIC PEOPLE .... WE GONNA NEED IT IN THE FUTURE !!!

  • Free World was one of Jesse's funkiest cuts, IMO. Does anyone have Da Krash? Man, I can't find their music anywhere.

  • I don't have any vids but I have a song or two in my vault..

  • I have both of the tracks..free World is my favorite Jesse Johnson song..and

    da krash is just rockin´....

  • Heck yeah!! Da Krash was unreal!! I wish I never gave my sister that LP.

  • Jelly Do you know the name of the song that has these words "Everytime I`m feeling kind of sad someone say`s to me I love you" The records store here in Australia are SHIT you ask them for Jesse Johnson stuff and they have no idea or never heard of him

  • I wish I knew, money. Sorry I can't help you out.

  • Every Shade of Love

  • I have DaKrash on tape and I could put it on CD for you. Hit me up on MESSAGE.

  • To my fellow Afro-Rockers:

Let's make history on you tube! We can make videos that express our love of rock. The web-cam is our greatest tool. Simply play a rock song and rock out on the webcam! It's simple. The opportunities to rock out on YOUTUBE are limitless! Are we going to take advantage of this opportunity?

    Signed

    The Great Afro-Rocker

    Brother Johnson is an Afro-Rocker

    You can be too!

  • actually, rock-n-roll IS our music! "rock-n-roll" is a phrase coined BY BLACKS waaaay back in the day!! i love "afro-rock", 2!!

  • Does anyone know any afrorockers or blacks who love rock music? If you do can you please let me know.

P.S. Can you imagine the first afro-rock party at Howard University! Now that would be something to see!!

  • we started rock check history, stated that with no ill will. blacks love rock absolutely more than you and others coul conceive. check cosmic slop by parliament funkadelic ,even on the album with the song one nation under a groove. List of other black artist that "rock out",too many to list

  • Jesse had 3 great albums...love that dude.

  • Correction.. I have got four Jesse Johnson albums. Jesse Johnson's Revue (1985), Shockadelica (1986), Every Shade Of Love (1988), Bare My Naked Soul (1996). Plus a lotta side-prjects like "Da Crash" or "Tamara & The Seen". He has also produced two tracks on Janet Jackson's "Dream Street" album of 1984.

  • Does anybody remember Free World? That was pretty cool too.

  • oh yeah, "....somebody help me out. have you heard, it's a free world and it's mine"

  • ..wish this video was clearer..

like I said; best contemporary guitarist in recent years!!

  • I was so glad when he went solo to hit with this one(along with "i want my girl")....Jesse Johnson is a humble player, but plays a hell of guitar when he's put on the spot. I give him much high ranking for that. His polite performing attitude reminds me of the great Jimi Hendrix.

  • Jessie do you still have a band? you play shows dude?

  • Yea this is the shyt!

  • This was my jam back in the day. You can definitely see/hear the Prince influence at work here.

  • Jessie is clever artist ..this reminds me of high school in the 80's.. He reached back and grabbed a funk pantheon Sly Stone on "Crazy". Jessie w/Sly Stone is timeless!!it a Minneapolis funk thing.. I'm sure you agree? Actuall it was James Brown-Prince, The Time, Jessie.and possibly Mint Condition!

Bass playa del sur aqui Puerto Rico

  • Granted we all have our opinions, but to put Jesse ahead of Jimmy & Terry is a slap in the face. If anything it is

    #1 Prince

    #2 Jimmy & Terry

    #3 Jesse

  • Granted, as producers Jam and Terry reign compared to Jesse they are some of the most sought after producers but what I was referring to was musicianship. In that sense, I put Jesse way ahead of Jam and Terry. If you put them on a stage with Jesse in my opinion he puts them to shame. Jesse is TIGHT-he is one of the best guitar players there is-and a very underrated one at that. But like u said we are all entitled to our opinions-we'll just have to agree to disagree on this matter..it's cool..;)

  • LOL...cool. Great post.

  • I would not use "Jesse Johnson" on the tags or post comment since NPG is getting rid all Prince related video clips. I would sub it for "Pink" One of my colleages got her account frozen for posting up all video clips from The Time/Morris Day/Vanity 6! Watch out, NuDelic!

  • Thnx

  • IS This The REAL Drummmgod of The TIME[One of The Greatest funk Bands of All Time?If so Man Everytime Ya'll Came to Milwaukee I Was in The M.F. House!

  • I wish that I was. I just happen to be from Minneapolis and go by the name of JellyBean.

  • AHHH Man I Thought It Was THE JELLYBEAN!Not That I'm Dissin' U! Minn. Had Some Hot ASS bANDS bACK iN dA Day.But To me THE TIME was The Best Hands Down[ [Prince is A God ,so U can't count him]

  • still the shit

  • He can be my man anyday

  • You guys remember his song "I want back my girl"? That's his best solo jam!! Another Prince protege'!!

  • better guitarist than Prince

  • Whoa. Let's not loose our minds now. Jesse is cool and an all, but he aint no where near Prince's level.

  • Who said he was not many people are musical geniuses with thay type of God given gift..but Jesse is still TIGHT! Like someone else said MN musician rank Prince #1, Jesse #2 and I say this as a die hard Jesse fan. Though I prefer Jesse's music he does now which is more rock compared to his old stuff.

  • Terry Lewis said Prince was better than EVERYBODY on ALL instruments

  • Thank you. People just don't to give Uncle P his props. It's ok. We all know who is the best.

  • i really wonder why our Prince preserve Jesse even today ? i love n seen them both..Jesse ol work r classics..n Tamara projects "Affection" OMG that damn Guitar solo..Smooth Rock Fusion way ahead of time.."Can you help me" guitar solo..whoa..they had me goin to clubs in Bathrobes n S curls..

  • i cant thank you enough for these prince related videos!!!

  • MN musician rank. 1st. Prince; 2nd Jesse, J J & Terry Lewis

  • Man I'm bout to go crazy this so cool have any more footage please post

  • Thanks!! One of my favorite Jesse songs. We need to find "Can you Help me"

  • Cool.. thanks again!..rare gems..
