  • The take home answer in this position is: PLENTY. That is all you really need to know in order to evaluate the moves leading up to this position :)

  • I count 14

  • I count 15 possibilities.

    Qg7, Qf7, Qe8, Re8, Re6, Re5, Re4, Re3, Re2, Re1, Rh7, Rg7, Rd7, Rc7, and Rxb7.

Rf7 is not mate because Ke8 is available.

  • even if your perspective was somehow basic, how the K experiences mate has to do with 1. who and from where directly delivers the check and also 2. participation in the whole mate (pieces take away squares). a king's experience is involved with this or else he could walk and not be mated. the rook affects the king's experience differently by going to e8 (it checks),g7 (it guards g8),down the e (it guards all e), or along the 7th (guards all 7th). that's 4 ways. + the 3 Q checks = 7 not 5

  • you say incorrect to someone who said 16. your reasoning is something like this: a checkmate exists when the K experiences a certain stab to the heart. that stab may come from the left, from the right, both ways, etc. thus, moves which stab the king the same do not count as more than one. note that you allow checkmate from the eyes of the king. not from the eyes of the board. this is perspective. thus, you should have clarified under which perspective the puzzle was given.

  • General direction was correct. But... Attention to Details! (correct answer was already explained above, if you wish)

  • SkobarChess:

the R moves in straight lines. there are 8 squares along any straight line on a board. thus the rook moves 8 x 2 -2 (because it cannot go where it sits) = 14. one of these 14 is blocked from the rook, so 13. the Q has 3 moves that deliver mate. 16.

  • The rook can move to any of the 7 remaining squares along the e-file (e1, e2, e3, e4, e5, e6, e8) and to another 5 squares along the 7th rank (b7, c7, d7, g7, h7), with discovered check, so there are 12 mates by moving the rook. The white queen can mate on e8, f7 and g7, so there is a total of 15 possibilities of mate (in one move, of course).

Thanks for your videos. I've just found your channel! :-)

  • good job!

  • There are 5 different moves that achieve

    checkmate in one stroke.

  • Think again!

  • Technically the rook can move to a combined total of 13 squares along the 7th rank and

the e file and uncover checkmate on the king.

The queen can move to 3 different squares and

deliver mate. So there are really 16 different

moves that will deliver the coup de grace.

  • Almost there! But... Think again!

  • Maybe I misunderstood the question. We are looking for checkmate in one move correct?

  • Correct. Just my mistake...

  • I meant, one mistake. Check carefully

  • Just one move either Qg7 or Qf7

  • Oh, no!

    Think again! :-)

  • no 14 is right

  • 15? right?
