Reckoning is, to me, their best work. The guitar sound, the interplay of bass/drums, the emotion of the singing and the odd song structures are perhaps the finest music ever made.
It doesn't matter if current R.E.M. doesn't match the greatness of the IRS years and the early 90s. Their reputation as arguably the best American band of all time is assured.
Beautiful song. I love the early R.E.M. songs that evoke the American south a la William Faulkner or Tennessee Williams. There's a sense of longing and mystery there that made the songs really stand out from the other music of the time.
the old stuff is so from the heart..pure and absolute..reminds me of my first love :) that first stinging heart break ..the pain lingers in the wounds :(
Yeah this song is so under-recognized (as was rem sleep for long time). One of their very best and Michael never mumbled better.

song of the day!
"rivers of suggestion are driving me away"...my favorite r.e.m. song. "go build yourself another one, this choice just isn't mine".

Thank you for being R.E.M. I can't articulate that better. You guys are the best. You exemplified an era and what a GREAT song this is.

For many years this song has seemed to follow me. I always hear it when in the moments I have felt all-everything that I've ever loved has been lost.
