  • Still one of my fave Al riffs of all times.

    This one and Anthem.

  • FUCK YES

  • Ill go to the RNR hall of fame when RUSH is in it !!! No earlier ..

  • 4 people would rather spend tax dollars on useless eaters!

  • brilliant!.. thank you RUSH! <3

  • I love the tone of Ged's bass in this one.esp 2:02-2:16.

  • oh shit i did not know there was a music video

as a bassist i get a boner from geddy's sound in this sond

  • sick at 3:51

  • @crazypenny94 SWEET! Love Alex's Leg up!!! A total Classic!!!

  • 4 people got cut from the astronaut program.

  • Also it's like they told Geddy to create basslines that weren't as cool as before

  • @throwsand I think the bass lines on Hold Your Fire are some of the best he's ever written.

  • Cool, but almost everything before Signals was better

  • This vid is a "rush" (awe-inspiring)...

  • The shuttle is done, but RUSH far from it.

  • Where there is Science - there is RUSH, I can totally hear this song in my head

when India launches a new satellite via its PSLV!

  • The US will now pay hundreds of millions of US Taxpayer money to Russia to haul our dumb asses (63 million dollars per seat) into space now. Is this a great country or what? Does anyone remember when America was worth a damn? How in the hell did we get so STUPID??!!??

  • @centaurus777 Not to worry, in a another 5-10 years WE'LL be a Third World Country!

  • @NS9213 Thanks, that makes me feel Sooo much better.

  • @centaurus777 Just ask Bush. lol

  • LOVE this..the metaphors used in this song are awesome....sleeping white dragon. and its cool at the end u hear guy on radio say.."We enjoyed the music Bob thank ya" too cool

  • Thanks for the memories NASA and Rush.

  • I think the last time I saw this video it was on one of my VHS tapes. I forgot just how wonderfully the video and the song work together. Great job from a band I have seen 27 times.

  • What a view...

  • The last flight of Atlantis and I'm listening to this...I'm getting misty-eyed.

  • @HollywoodWags i agree just what i was gonna say bet me to it. there is one of usa night flight called rocket it .

  • @HollywoodWags same here

  • I WAS THERE!!!! Drove on the spur of the moment from Chicago Friday night April 10th....1200 miles later we arrive about 9:30 Sat night...got in the causeway gate with local guys...they GAVE ME THE PASS...printed on it is FIRST LAUNCH OF THE SPACE SHUTTLE....in 4 hours, I take off from Denverr to fly down on the 4th of July, and will witness the final launch on July 8th, 2011. The memory is still so vivid after 30 years, and sad to see it end...GO ATLANTIS!! P.S. wonder if Rush will come down?

  • I like the way Alex's tie keeps moving over the guitar strings - he wasn't miming was he?

  • the last of the Broonsie era......Another perfect album.

  • Love this song and Geddy's shirt

  • Soon, we'll all say goodbye to the shuttle for good. I was 11 years old when this puppy took off back in 1981 and I was in such awe. That's one thing I regretfully never got to witness live, a shuttle launch and landing. Challenger and Columbia and your crews are gone but will NEVER be forgotten. Atlantis and Endevour, enjoy your retirements. You served the world well.

  • There is only one band on the planet that could capture the essence of a Space Shuttle launch and not come off like cheese balls. This just shows the musical depth of this band is beyond what normal people can even conceive. Just brilliant!

  • just watched a movie about chuck yeager ( hope I spelt that right) and about the shuttle lauches in the early 60's this song makes me think of that movie it was in my head the whole time

  • they actually played this on Endeavor yesterday!

    up on youtube

umm yeah Rush has nothing to do with rock. rock and roll or anything of that nature.

  • even a rush song with a full-on keyboard solo is awesome.

  • Great wakeupcall for the crew of the STS-134!

  • I can't believe they never used this song as a tribute for the Columbia disaster...I mean it was the first to launch and the last to perish. Rush is almost prophetic in their songwrting.

  • Fuckin "A " bubba!

  • whoever is in charge of the 'ad' under the 'likes' and 'dislikes' needs to correct the info! apparently, it is NOT Rush performing at Liberty University, but some little nerdy Christian group who call themselves Rush of Fools(lmao!!!). i live near Liberty and can tell you for sure they could NEVER in a million years pay the real Rush what they deserve!!!

  • FUCK OBAMA

  • I hope pepsi and dubble mint hires Rush

  • I've been to a launch, and man do the capture it. Sigh, what 1-2 left now. I love the fact the vid is actually STS-1, (for those who don't know, the white fuel tank gives it away)

  • this has to be one of my favorite videos from back in my teen years-when MTV actually rocked-great post! going to see these guys in Cleveland on April 15th!

  • awesome song. I wish they'd play it in concert, along with test for echo, manhattan project, and Cygnus X-1. They are some of my favorite rush songs.

  • Definately a guy song....pure testesterone!

  • Watching this now as they are gearing up to launch Discovery for the last time.

  • "See you in the drift"? Not a good thing to say nowadays to someone flying around in a space shuttle!

  • @gorillabelly1 that's actually 'See you in Madrid.' go to Google and type in 'Rush - album 'signals' - track 'countdown' - lyrics'

  • What's this song about?

  • @gorillabelly1 It's about a guy that wants to eat beans around the universe.

  • Sign into your facebook and type Juno Awards and

Vote for Rush New World Man from the Signals album as favorite song

  • I love that crash that comes from out of nowhere at 1:03. Then at 1:19 Peart keeps the bass drum part going and adds a part played on the snare & hi-hat that's one 8th behind the bass drum rhythm. Sorry about that. I can be a rhythm nerd sometimes. Hey, it's fun though.

  • @drewper73 hey! you're very astute and observant! i like that! ;) i'm the same way. and i have bands like this to thank for it. i'm a drummer and bass player so i learned the importance of rhythm and learning to count a long time ago! i always like to see other people who notice things like this. very cool!

  • @rickfan1964 Thanks 4 the compliments. I've just always loved the drum part at 1:19. I'll never know for sure if Peart was aware of what he was playing but I'd like to think he was. The drum part at 1:19 is the kind of thing drummers tend to come up with when they're "woodshedding" by themselves. I don't think he played that part only b/c of the 8th note displacement thing. I think he played b/c doing something creative with the rhythm just happened to be the perfect part. Who knows? *Take care*

  • This is kind of one of their cornier songs, but just love hearing the bass in this song.

  • @JustinC721 The guitar in the begining is awesome, then once the bass comes in it kinds kind of cheesey i agree lol

  • @Jalreal Yeah, it does bring in that 80's cheese, but Geddy's Bass totally makes this song worth listening to.

  • @Jalreal Rush and 'cheesy' are two words that should NEVER be associated with one another...EVER!! that's blasphemy!

  • @JustinC721 i love the bass and everything else, but i wouldn't call it corny. :( these guys witnessed a spectacular event not many people in this world have the privilege of and they were just trying to pay homage and tribute to the space program. nothing corny about that.

  • This band not being in the Hall of Fame completely destroys the credibility of that Hall of Fame.

  • @Crust218

That's why it's also known as the Hall of Shame! It's there to honour Board members' personal musical heroes.

  • the 3 a holes who dislike this can fuck themselves .. Rush Rules and this video ROCKS!

  • is anyone else addicted to the outro riff? lol

  • THIS IS EPIC!!!!!!!!!

  • 28 years after watching this video as kids, how many of us are now engineers or scientists or techies of one sort or another, and every time I see a space launch I think of this song. These three guys are more than rock stars, they actually inspire people to do cool stuff with their lives.

  • @RCAvhstape Well said! I completely agree!

  • @RCAvhstape

I knew I wanted to work in the space programme long before this song came out .. but I thought it was just the most amazingly beautiful and fitting piece of music I could imagine. It always brought me to the edge of tears whenever I saw it in concert. The subsonic roar of the lifting shuttle blew me away. Always will.

  • @jbj9802 Yeah, me too, it was certainly cool to have a rock band that we future engineers could rock out to back then, and the fact that Rush not only appeals to us geeks but also happens to be perhaps the greatest three musicians ever assembled makes me proud to be a fan. I know lots of engineers and scientists who are Rush fans, and at least one architect. Rush appeals to those of us who love to use our brains and build the future.

  • Very moving song. The descriptions of the Shuttle by Neil as a smoking white dragon, just amazing. The man is just a genius.

  • Columbia will never be forgotten. A historic event, and song from a historic band.

  • TechnologyHigh. com

  • Best Album By Far SIGNALS!!!!

    RushFan2112

  • Best bass sound ever!!

  • I always loved how neal put in a little flourish after the capcom guy talks about 'hotdogging it' :-)

  • This song and "losing it"are two of the most underated compositions Rush ever played. Losing it applies to what is currently taking place in this country.

  • I've seen all but two of the shuttle launches and I must say that Neil & the boys really captued the feel of a launch with this song

  • @FLTlingit Humans went to the moon in 1969. I mean, considering it was really truth. It's a HUGE achievement, even with today's tecnology it would be hard as hell.

I mean... HUMANS WENT TO THE MOON, MAN!

  • This was a great closing song for the Signals album, sends goosebumps up my spine evreytime i hear it.

  • @SciMasterGeneral you typing down that statement was the saddest thing that has happened on Earth. If you have nothing good to type, then don't type at all!

  • Rush accomplished their stardom with zero publicity. That in and of itself is an accomplishment. Why ruin that with things as cheesy as guest appearances? Btw, anyone who would refer to Rush, or anything that they've written as "dorky" needs to re-evaluate their perception of creativity.

  • This magic day when super science mingles with the bright stuff of dreams.

    YES!!

    I love Signals!

  • Hey RUSH fans!!!

Vote for this Rush song will be played will be provided as launch of the mission draws closer. STS-133 is currently scheduled to launch on November 1, 2010.

Vote in Nasa's Top 40 page!!!

    One chilean Rush fan

(Rush in Santiago October 17, YEAH!!!)

  • @pablooctavio

    I did!

  • vote vote vote Rush for final space shuttle lift off

    songcontest . nasa . gov / top40 .aspx

  • This song was written during the heyday of excitement for the shuttlecraft. It should really win in the current poll as a song to be played as the shuttle missions wind down to their conclusion. They are ahead last I check by about 3000 votes, but keep voting. It's not over yet.

  • 3:53 LOL Alex and his dropkick

    best band ever!

  • LITERAL space rock!

  • @esteban3527343 no !! all people should vote for starwars theme its gonna be epic xD

  • @Georg5555 -- no, this song is far more relevant. It's a tribute to the first space shuttle mission, back in the early 80s. PERFECT for the final shuttle mission.

And that's coming from a huge star wars/star trek fan.

  • awsome i love rush

  • Vote for the NASA song contest ~ Rush - Countdown is currently winning!

  • @PivotStudiosXE

    2. now,Star Trek surpassed it

By my music opinion this is better, but come on.it's Star Trek

Still,I would rather choose the ST:Enterprise Intro

  • lol at people who think anything by Dream Theater compares to this...

  • When Rush went to watch the shuttle launch this song was written for, they sat in Red Sector A. Which Neil later used of course. There's your Rush trivia for the day.

  • Rush has always been able to "up the anty" from album to album, Always stretching and changing but not lingering too long in any one form ie long prog songs to straight to the point kick ass song ie Subdivisions .

IMO Signals and Grace are 2 of my fave albums and I could care less if Gary,Alex and Neil think it was good or not,the proof is in the puddin' baby!!! I don't think they've ever done an album that was total shite!

  • Signals grew on me but it seems that they went with too much synthesizer in the 80s and lost something. I did like Presto a lot more and seemed to have more of a unique Rush sound. Things got reall good with "Counterparts"

  • I think "Signals" was one of my favorite Rush albums. It's very dark but consistent., it's not "Moving Pictures II" . Terry Brown was very unsatisfied with the album, because he didn't like the use of electronic drums. "Grace Under Pressure" I think it was a good record, but a unfair forgetten.

  • syth was getting onto the scene then I like the album and everthing balances out well..

  • this song is about the columbia. i still like it but now it just makes me sad to hear it.

  • This song is fucking awesome. They should play it more often. Next live album should have more classics they never had on vhs/dvd shows like this.

  • Rush can criticize the sound engineering of their own album (Signals), but there is no doubt, that is some of the best music ever comprised on one album.

  • I prefer SIGNALS over HOLD YOUR FIRE or POWER WINDOWS

  • What you have to realize folks is that, just like everything else out there, with time comes experience. The sound that they had at the time of this album was where they were musically. After watching "Beyond the Lighted Stage", I have a much deeper appreciation for their music. Different sounds and styles were dictated with where they were at that particular time in their careers. They will always be my favorite band.

  • my favorite part is from 5:07 to the end, favorite rush song

  • RUSH GOING TO NASA IS PROBABLY THE WORST TRAVESTY TO HAPPEN IN ROCK MUSIC. THEIR MUSIC LOST EVERY BIT OF EDGE AFTER THE LITTLE JAUNT TO FLORIDA. THE TAURUS PEDAL PART SOUNDS LIKE THE MARCH FOR THE SCIENTIFIC YOUTH OF AMERICA. GEE ALEX, WHAT A SCORCHING LEAD.

  • signals is an awesome album, one of my all time favs, there's not a track on there that i skip

  • great album, I don't care what they say :)

  • 2:03

    Love that part

  • Alex's rif at 1:54 is totaly him.

  • can any tell me, what says at the end of the song, the NASA ...¿?¿?¿?? .......live in Madrid. because I `m from Spain, and I live in Madrid city. thx.

  • @santyrush

I think it says "You're looking good, burning over the hill. We'll see you in Madrid."

I assume it means that Columbia was reaching the horizon (the hill), and would be transferring to ground control in Madrid for communication with Earth.

  • @santyrush I believe it is where radio communications are x-ferred @ that particular point in the mission until they hit the next communications point.

  • Definitely one song I'd love to hear these guys play....I don't think they've played it since their 'Signals' tour...

  • A classic song!!!

  • I'm going to the first 3 Rush shows Albuquerque, KC, Milw. Road trippin' it from Indiana.....anybody wanna come?

  • @waiting4guffman ill go bro

  • Comment removed

  • Oh man Signals is incredible. Who's not "moved" by The Analog Kid? But my fave is Chemistry...there's just something about that song that gets me.

  • @WestalSage I agree 110% This album is their finest work ever.

  • It was sort of a pivotal place in history. america was back in space with manned missions since the sklylab program. On april 12 of that day you were kinda proud to be an american again. it's appropiate nasa is shutting down the program .Columbiawas the flagship for the program. When she and her crew were lost it kinda signaled the end

  • Love this song.......sadly, they haven't played it live since the "Signals Tour.......maybe this summer on their "Time Machine" Tour.

  • @rocktistic They will be playing this reportedly....just gonna have to wait and see!

  • one of my favorite songs. it's about a pivotal moment in history.

  • The song is about a space shuttle launch. NOT a pivotal moment in history.

  • @Section31Captain Actually it is about a PIVOTAL point in AEROSPACE HISTORY

  • I would be nice if Rush played at the Super Bowl XLV Halftime Show next year in Dallas!!!

  • Hell yea man :D That would be sweet. Haha they'd probably play Tom Sawyer, Limelight, and YYZ. I'd prefer Subdivisions, Losing It and Countdown though :D

  • If they played La Villa Strangiato, the world who combust due to the sheer amazement. By far the most instrumental-oriented and difficult song ever created.

  • I don't think there'd be much of a Rush fanbase down there, don't you think?

  • @Pookatube the superbowl is gonna be indianapolis

  • @Pookatube Jerry Jones can't afford Rush!!!!!!!

  • I love it when Geddy rolls up his sleeves and acts tough haha

  • Geddy has more Rick's dude! Do your research. NASA and RUSH = Technology high, on the leading edge of Life!!! Randall 2112.

  • A Masterpiece!!! This is the only track that Geddy's recorded with the Rickenbacker bass. too much associated to him!

  • The greatest rock band in history!

  • i think this is the album where Geddy's bass tone peaked. i mean listen to it! it sounds like a freaking lion! the perfect mix of fuzz, crunch, and growl. at least in my top 5 rush albums. i must also agree that the riff at 2:59 pretty much describes Rush. it's one of their best riffs ever. so overlooked!!

  • It's probably the best for his old specific gritty bass sound heard from Kings - Signals. After this you had the Steinberger on GUP and it lost a whole lot of its ass kicking power. And then the Wal, which was a little better.

  • and why the hell arent they inducted in the HOF yet ??

  • Because the Hall of Fame is a joke anyway.

  • @burningxdimx

Yep. The fact that Madonna's an inductee (call that Rock 'n' Roll?) and not Rush pretty well sums up the HOF's lack of any credibility whatsoever. I think the only prog rock the HOF is interested in is Pink Floyd. King Crimson, Yes, and Rush could blow most of the HOF inductees off the stage with ease, but you'll never see them honoured, as it's not about IMPORTANT music, but what's POPULAR and what's (primarily) AMERICAN.

  • @gorillabelly1-What I find funny is that the Canadian's have elevated them to a pretty high standing in Canada but yet they are always passed over for the R&R Hall of Fame. I will never go to the hall because as you said, I seriously believe they lack any credibility. RUSH is and has been one of the most influential bands of all time...

  • the progression beginning at 2:59 is pure RUSH! makes my hair stand straight up...

  • Dude you took the words right outta my mouth i rewind that part like 9 times everytime i listen to this track :)

  • Here's a genre of music that is almost non-existant: The romance of technology through music. Wonderful. And, literate.

  • Excellent observation, well said....

  • This Rush made my mind travel at such a high speed as I leave the earth behind and feeling shaking vibration of my space ship... this song gave me a strange love for technology... and space program

  • Alex's riff at 1.54 is an awsome add to this song....this band was truly blessed...:>)

  • i love the synth solo in this song. amazing

  • 5 stars and nothing less !!!

  • Love this song!! Alex leg kick is awesome!!!!

  • some history about this video is a class went down to the take off and when some of the students were standing and waiting rush's base player came by and ate one of their donuts and used their bug spray then the base player was so thankful 4 the donut the teacher got to be in the video

  • *bass

  • The best tribute to the STS-1 launch ever. Yes, it was the first shuttle launch that the boys from up North watched (in person), and inspired them to write this song.

  • one of the best synth solos/riffs ever made. altho this song sounds alot like subdivisons...

  • What awesome song!

    RUSH, the greatest BAND ever...

  • What awesome song!

Rush are ALWAYS the greatest Rock Band EVER !!!

  • I have always loved this song, Niel Peart is a genius lyricist. - the only thing that ever bothered me about the song is that when the shuttle launches, it should be LOUD AS HELL, where it almost overpowers the music.

  • Just can't imagine wht ANYONE ANYWHERE wouldn't get off on this.

  • Something about this song still gives me goosebumps after all these years. They did a good job of capturing the excitement of the (then) new Shuttle space program. I sometimes wonder if the days of these type of "national pride" events are gone. Man in space is truly a remarkable historical achievement, and to think we got to witness the beginning of it. I hope greater days are to come for the U.S.

  • T-shirt with the sleeves cut off
