Yes, I know what you mean about humping equipment up the hill, especially during alerts, then we were really loaded down. Didnt you love the run downtown, around downtown, and then run up the hill toward the multi colored school, Heartbreak Ridge for sure, then finish going up the hill to the base. Im glad we were young. LOL
i was stationed there 3/11 acr '78-'79 workhorse hwb , i don't miss humping the field gear and weapons up the hill to the motor pool nor do i miss the 5 mile squadron runs up wuppershane (sp) hill
@dutchvonhenry copy your last, KP was the one think I dreaded most. i was talking to a military guy the other day and he didn't know what KP stood for. Now i don't run 5 miles, i just walk it ;-)
Have visited your site and really enjoyed seeing all the old and new pictures.40 years without hearing a sireen going off at 4 in the morning has been a plus. Remember heading up to the motorpool at that time with my dufflebag, weopon and the Smell of diesel. What made you decide to go back??? Remember Flippies!!!
@207nkf Thanks, I returned with my family because I could not find the words to describe the people, Hersfeld, Hessen, our Kaserne. BTW I have a few empty flippies and when I smell the exhaust of a diesel I have flashbacks ;-)
68-70 How battery, I still remember KP, guard duty out at the ammo dump in the middle of nowhere. mox nix guy outside the gates, wash rack, EM and later NCO club, 5K club. Thought 2 years would never go by, now 40 years later. Mess hall and thankfuly the Snack Bar on liver and onions night!!!! Suivez moi...Corporal Dan
spent many a good weekend with the blackhorse on our visits from hildesheim with the 1 RTR contingent BAOR from 86 - 92 - good wishes to all who served especially bill clark, ernie ford and Ned Devereux III
cegranch being you did not know about the shut down. Maybe you do not know about my other youtub post and my 3rd Sq Web page. YT will not allow me to post my web address 100% this is close w w w . thedeitz . com
I served from 1986 through 1988, and your videos still bring back memories. I too returned in 2004 to see many changes. It was almost we were never there! But we knew we were... Thanks for sharing.
Reference It was almost we were never there! * In 2005 I like you and other GIs returned to Bad Hersfeld on holiday. I with my family visiting where I served in the Army. I was sadden, disappointed that there was nothing there acknowledging our past presents. In 2005 I came up with the idea to have a monument erected there to Honor all who severed with the 3rd. Sq. As a result, with a lot of help, donations by many we will have a reunion/ dedication in June 2009 for our Memorial. thedeitz . com
Memories, Memories, my Father was a Tankie in the British army, I grew up in Garrisons in cold war Germany, Hohne, Rhirendahlen....my folks they live there still.
POZ48, it may be hard to belive but they are the same buildings. The Germans did a good job 'flipping' them ;) As far as being cold. That was the reason for all the GI parties, to keep us warm.
It certainley brings back memories Make sure everyone checks out the allons dayroom on facebook Thanks to all that have served

Great memories here. It would have been nice to have stayed in those new buildings. Remember those old drafty windows? The cold winter winds?

Ah! Yes! The old G.I. parties. I prefered the lovely Frauleins to keep me warm, but the Army often had other ideas about that.
