3 blond dudes all in the same band?? how can this be... ? . i dont see 3 blond dudes if i go out of my way to find them. (my point is that blond hair is being erased by nature for some reason)
There might be better bands. I haven't seen them. There was an earlier comment saying they'd like to see a concert with the camera aimed only at Stewart Copland. To which I would have no objection.
Totally underated, and i'm saying this about what is effectively a very well selling pop group, their collective talent is simply amazing every member can be an inspiration or idol of any learning musician
@Rikitocker Oh, come on... that was what was so exciting about the Police. They weren't afraid to stretch the songs out live. Can't Stand Losing You ended up around 7 minutes long, but it was still amazing. They did end up screwing up the songs a lot when they got back together, but that's because they were messing with the feel of the entire song. A different and interesting guitar solo is perfectly acceptable, especially when they're playing the same songs every night for 9 months!
A damn shame that these guys hate each other so much. There has to be an amazing amount of music left between the three of them. Will we ever hear it???
The Zenyatta Tour was by far their best IMO. Ghost and Synchronicity sounded over-produced and too commercial. Sting wasn't totally full of himself at this point, but getting there. Ha!
@razzia89 I'm responding to a message you put on a police video. I agree that the police are awesome and influential. You said "what do we have for music now?" Well unfortunately a lot of the good music of today( and there is a lot.) has been driven "underground" because it's not commercial enough and because major record labels don't want to spend enough time developing artists they want the quick money. There is a lot of good music out there. Just look for it. pitchfork, youtube.
Man i'm thankful to have the police and bands like them to look back on for influences, i would be lost musically without, look at the music now a days what that the fuck do we have lol??
@SteveShivik I was lucky enough to see the English Beat in concert, so I got one there :)! If you can't go see them (which I totally recommend) I'd check their website
U just never see three jazz lovers playing a mixture of fusion and punk. At 2:34 Copeland pumped the tempo up to double that of most punk bands did at the time. Stu is a legend.
@brianallancobb No, any synths you hear are Moog Taurus pedals that both Sting and Andy had on the floor, operated by the feet. The were pretty primitive, I don't even recall them being polyphonic. Later, they went to having keyboards at each end of the stage for Sting and Andy to add in sustained notes on occasion.
Thanks, I'll watch again and watch their feet. :-)
Saw Joan Jett in a club in Seattle in 1994. Her manager/producer, Kenny Laguna, sat off to the side of the stage playing sustained notes and chords on a keyboard.
He would even applaud after each song, as if he were a member of the audience.
Stewart is simply a beast on the drums, and with Sting on the fretless bass (come on bass wankers...Sting sucks..right... WRONG) and Andy's kicking solo... the three were just ON!
They are way too amped up when playing live and the CDs/videos are better. I am still a big fan, but don't want to hear jazz versions of Police music. Their sound was originally a bit of raggae not jazz.
I saw Queen at Madison Square Garden in 1983, and missed the Police a month later, but the QUEEN performance was first class with Freddie Mercury.
Caught them in Germany on this tour. There were so different live. A lot of Energy. And very cool to see all these kids from overseas enjoying the heck out of a great band.
The Police: What a band should truly be like. Maybe they had fights here and there, but on stage they were the best. Stewart's drum beats wouldn't have as much power without being behind Sting's high, raspy voice and bouncing bass lines, which wouldn't be anything without Andy's catchy, piercing guitar licks and chords, which wouldn't be anything without Stewart's syncopated beats and other-worldly hi-hat rhythms. It's that simple
I look at how stiff Stewart is and, though I know he's young, I wonder how he avoided serious joint problems. You can play that fast, but that stiff is really rough on you.
@ WANNAROCKNROLL -good drummers can play like that... @absting1 Great power trio! Rush is another... can't think of any others on that level, can you? I had so much fun jamming out with a bass player and a guitar player last week.
For some reason, YouTube won't allow links to other YouTube videos in a post so, if I may...
Search for 'Andy Summers Telecaster' and the first results you'll see involve the replication project by the Fender Custom Shop, who have a history of doing tribute versions of famous guitars, including Eric Clapton's 'Blackie' guitar. @OralAgreement69 Zenyatta Mondatta, def. not an early album but better sound and andy has reached his style fully by now on guitar. unlike alot of 80's shit, his effects don't sound dated but unique. probably the best studio album in terms of sound quality. if i had to only have one police album, this would be it.

Copeland's gotta have spinal arthritis by now. that guy still plays just as hard to this day, he probably goes to a specialist every week to keep that in check, hats off to him
Although Sting got most of the press and went on to become one of the largest stars in music, I believe Stewart Copeland was the driving force in this band. Those unmistakable beats drove the music of this awesome band. No other drummer could compare during the 80s.
What's that Onion editoral based around Sting? "I used to be cool once?"
Because I think that sums everything up very easily. Because outside of a tight band(and The Police did happen to be fully formed band) he crawls straight up his own arse and brings us Desert Rose...urghhh..
MY COMFORTABLE EXISTENCE reduced to her saying Too Many SHadows bouncy balls and ha timing is e. Just because I protested the fact that crucify me by meerkat. By now we bounce around of walls like
The reason why I say this is because it sounds too good to be live...and Sting is in sync. Also, look at 0:59 where Andy is still playing the bass notes while the music goes from Bm7 to Am7...I don't know, it just seems suspiciously too good sounding.
The Police has been my favourite band since May, 1981. Now, 42, still my favourite band still...... Rush, continues to be the most musically talented without any dispute, ever, trio or not..........
Hendrix also had a great drummer, Mitch Mitchell, very unorthodox - it's rumoured that he played all the drums on Sgt. Pepper's, Ringo was only allowed a tambourine...
Copeland drives all the great Police songs, definitely the instrumentalist of the group, the main force to the energy..
Jimi will never be touched, that's for sure. NEVERTHELESS, The Police was in many ways an escape from the Rock that surged from him, Cream, Led etc. They believed that less was more and mada their point with that. I love Hendrix, but Copeland is "THE" DRUMMER for me.
Stewart and Andy were the kickass musicians that made this band - Sumner's talent is and always has been overrated. Copeland is clearly pumped in this video - looking toward the end like his throttle was stuck wide open after someone threw a little coke in his fuel tank..... Love his drumming style.
Freakin' great song and decent vid quality for 1980, i just wish the camera would've stayed on Stew a little longer so I can learn his technique....MONSTER DRUMMER!!!!
There will never be a trio sounding better than this live. This kind of energy and chemistry happens only once a century. I dare you to name a better live experience!

@WANNAROCKNROLL yeah stewart is amazing , but I think this version is speed up from the original live version of this, but it still sounds great!

@WANNAROCKNROLL Yes, but I never undertand why Sting always said that he didn't go on tempo!... présomptueux? sure :-)

I have to agree (and theoretically, I'm a 60s guy....This will always be one of the most powerful experiences ever. Unsurpassed.

There will never be a trio sounding better than this live. This kind of energy and chemistry happens only once a century. I dare you to name a better live experience!
