they were ahead of their time, this is like pre-shoegaze, they, to me, sound like a perfect mix of lush and st etienne, it's like I took 2 genres I love, dream pop/shoegaze, and alternative dance pop, and combined them. this has been a real treat to discover, amg doesn't describe their sound at all, if I knew they sounded like this, I would of been listening to this years ago.
Saint Etienne? Was Sarah Cracknell ever a fan? There's a thought...some, slight similarities there or am I mistaken. Strawberry Switchblade were first too, no?
@winstonthecat that's sooooooo funny , I said that on my comment, they sound like a source for saint etienne AND lush, it's crazy. there's groups that influence bands in england, and we never know. like I've just gotten into the buzzcocks, and I've been listening to some early, rare/unreleased at the time adam and the ants, and it's TOTALLY where blur got their sound, and I loved blur for years, funny how that works...

I agree... "IFuggedYerMomma" is a naff homophobic self-loathing nelly... and we all know he craves a big boner and actually wants to look like one of the "Strawbs'...
Anyway... most of his rants are impossible to decipher... I mean, does anyone here actually know what language that is? It sounds pretty retarded to me.
@macintosser i think its some form of wannabe gettho shit hoodrat or somethin, i dunno why but this guy just targets me for no reason and starts trolling the hell out of me, in three or 4 different rooms at the same time.i was targeted maaan :D
Yes, I had wondered why that apocalyptic white trash was here, bothering people who are into Strawberry Switchblade... Why isn't he somewhere else commenting on Pariah Scarey's big pendulous udders...
Im 16 and i prefer this music over the music they have today they pretty much sound the same so it gets boring easily they play it alot but i find this music more interesting and awesome
the first time I heard this song was a quarter of century ago and the girl I was with then strangely resembled one of them - I should've run to buy the import album, though... everytime I listen to this song and watch this video, my heart misses a beat. "Kimi Ga Yo!"
I love these girls.. they are from my hometown glasgow and a lot of their clothing came from a market called paddys market!!! Im 37 this year my 12 yr old daughter loves them too..
when i walked in to HMV and asked for Strawberry Switchblade, the sales assistance when "HUH"?????hahaha, i am 35 now, and listened to them at 11years old... from Singapore with love...
Beautiful...I remember listening to this when I was a kid and relating to the lyrics, so funny "then I get myself a glass of milk...". When I hear this song now it sounds really haunting, but beautiful in the way something good that is gone seems.
Since yesterday is weird but intreging. I like this song though. Perky goth is very odd. (or maybe because i'm 15 and more used to bands like the cure)but anyway i like this song.
MMmmm so dreamy....This song is fantastic as well. Still remember listening to the 7" back in the 80s. And here I am 20 years later still listening....Ooops :)
I don't know why this didn't chart. The vocal/harmony arrangements are just beautiful. The horns sound great, proabably the only track they recorded where their vocals and guitars were mixed way down like the rest of the songs they recorded. I think that album was overproduced with too much "electronics." That's why it sounds so dated today. But this track is an exception.
20+ years ago this was 1 of the songs that lured me to New Wave--it kicked ass then, it still does now, for me. Also like 2 hear the Sundays, the Lotus Eaters, the Care...
OMG! Haven't heard this for well over 20years! Thanks for the post bog. Was this a single? I remember the video on the telly on the song on the radio, but there's no trace of it ever entering the Top 75. Not sure who's who, but a mutual friend of mine used to live in the same apartments as the blonde one, down in sunny Brighton!
I have been lookin for this for the looongest time!! thank you thank you for posting. I remember seeing this for the 1st time when I was a kid and as totally enthralled by their look and sound
WOW!!!! Many thanks for posting this! Loved Rose and Jill in the 80's still got the vinyl, album, trees and flowers, jolene 12" etc. Got the greatest hits cd recently too! Love their melancholic sound...fave is either Go Away or Secrets, probably the former, beautifully miserable.
One of their best songs is "10 James Orr Street" (I think that's the right name) from their album. It's a truly superb song, I'd love to hear it again. If you can find it, check it out!!!
Wow ,this song is so lovely! Do i hear Xylophones? I like the beat of the drums, the horns are soothing and the vocals are just sweet and the dream-like video makes the whole thing great! I luv this song and i always go here to watch and listen to it. This has been a part of my teen years and i'm thankful i found it here! *80s music lives on! =)
Ahhh this is my favorite of their songs - hadn't heard it in 15 years or so, and it still sounds wonderful! So odd how it's almost over-the-top bubble gummy and girly and yet it sounds so rich and delicious. Maybe it's the Herb Alpertish horns ...
Oh god they wrote songs about milk ... how I remember ... ahhh! ... I actually bought some of their albums thinking they might be something like Siouxsie & The Banshees ... I was sooooo wrong.
Strawberry Switchblade has never been big in Holland. I am probably the only idiot in the country who knows and remembers them. Up till now I never ever heard this song. Great!
Really? I prefer the black haired one myself. Never heard of them, but they do have part of my name in the title, and they are pretty hot...from what I can tell at least...
You know what I'm saying, bro? Still, Rose was cute too. I met her in 1988 at a Creation Records After party in London. She was very sweet and put up with me asking about Jill, I was only a kid, she understood...
ahhh, SO BEAUTIFUL!! it fills my heart with longing and with all subtle and gentle emotions...I love Rose so much... and the music...Rose is a genius for creating etherical voice harmonies. she started doing this with Strawberry Switchblade and continued with it, and even raised it to another level, in her other band Sorrow...if only I could her her singing live! it would be such a treat *
if u ever c them tell them if the want 2 come 2 any viking reanactments there is a free ticket 4 them just ask 4 jan the trouserless. we do events like battle near hastings and other events.
they don't do stuff together anymore, Rose has friends in Brighton and of course Glasgow, often playing in other bands like Current 93, Into a Circle and many others where she is backing or lead. I haven't seen rose for donkeys years (late 80s) but there are plenty of websites ploting her movements
i used to live in brighton but know live in crawley near gatwick airport and still have freinds and family in brighton so mabey i will come across rose sometime my brother in law is in the music down there.
I'm sure you will find people who know her esp the more unusal bands. jill on the otherhand is less outgoing, their first single called Trees and Flowers was about Jill's agriphobia (on 92 happy customers label later rereleased as a free bonus with album on Korova)
sorry its been so long,i was having a chat with a freind the other day and i reamber were i saw rose its was at a party i shared a house with a ex dolly mixture(captain sensibles backing group)i was very drunk though,
they split up after sucess in japan, Rose went off to Canada and continues singing, Jill remained in N london but i haven't seen her for over a year. several songs were only released in japan avilable on ebay from time to time -look out for the extra long version on cd
A perfect pop song. Love it. The video looks like a classic French porn film though. They were ahead of t.A.T.u in um, certain aspects. Now I know what love is!
Caladonian Cuties! Saw them in 85 in Coventry Poly and still have the 12" singles.Beautifully haunting song. Seem to remember that one of the girls was agoraphobic, which may explain some of the lyrics. Stu :}
After 21 years and it's only now that I've seen the video to this awesome song. Brings back memories. I share everyone else's sentiment... relaxing and artistic. Kudos to the girls, bogartnoir, and YouTube!
Fantastic. I'd never seen the video for this song till now. So lovely to see it and the girls again. Even in 2006 the song it still as fresh as it was in 85. Love it.
First time I see this one.. this is superb this is art! It is like an emotional landscape and the cenario is also very good. This is like a Romantic painting in a video clip.
Kinda reminds me of Enya, but I think SS came before. This is such a lovely song.

A perfect pop song. Love it. The video looks like a classic French porn film though. They were ahead of t.A.T.u in um, certain aspects. Now I know what love is!

Caladonian Cuties! Saw them in 85 in Coventry Poly and still have the 12" singles.Beautifully haunting song. Seem to remember that one of the girls was agoraphobic, which may explain some of the lyrics. Stu :}
