  • It's a shame they shit-canned the last of the S3s in 2008. They are pretty amazing at ASW and would have been tremendously useful against the Soviet Union. The P3 is better at ASW, but they also require 12 guys instead of 4 and aren't fast, maneuverable or carrier based. Thus, not well suited to rapid engagements of the type we'd likely have seen guarding the trans-Atlantic convoys against Soviet fast attack boats during a shooting war with the USSR. End of the Cold War killed a lot of planes.

  • wonder how this goes in 12'-18' seas? eek

  • Fucking. Legend.

  • What a great video - thanks for putting it up. I always liked the S-2 and the S-3. Recently read a book that had a fair old piece by a woman who flys a Greyhound - and just like all pilots she was proud of her job and her aircraft.

  • at first, looks like the plane will overshot the runaway..pheww..

  • awsome

  • hoover baby!

  • Sounds good!! but I would have like to hear the bitchen betty.

  • This is THE MOST perfect video on YouTube! No crappy music or corny nothing. Just the beautiful sound of Jet engines and an awesome landing!

  • can you imagine how great it would be to be able to do this for living

  • @SGSFC11 I Kno Right this is one badass job

  • What aircraft is replacing the S-3 in the ASW role?

  • @mgibbs88 None.

  • on yea by the way it was on the USS Kitty hawk

  • VS-21, out of Atsugi japan, i was a AME and worked on their ejectionseats and all those goodies... it was a honor to work on those HOOVERS!! haha

  • nice..!

  • perfect landing

  • '

wow nice landing on the carrier,,,

    good pilot driver,,,

    no DUI at all

  • Love when the ocean is a soup bowl

  • was this on the cvn-68 nimitz? my father worked on s3a vikings...

  • These guys have guts...

  • lol @ all the nubs talking about vacuums

  • TOO BAD ALL THIS TECHNOLOGY IS USED TO KILL HUMAN BEINGS , WITH MUSIC OR WITHOUT IT...

  • @nycworldsfair It's also used to save lives. Daily.

  • @nycworldsfair Some humans deserve--and need--to be killed. With fire, steel, and all implements of destruction.

  • nice Hoover Vacuum sound lol

  • Star Wars! we got there without knowing it

  • Just listen to that Hoover vacuum!

  • Very Cool, wish I was there.........USAF

  • @acesofspaces100 This is the USN. Not USAF.

  • call the ball

  • THANK YOU for not putting music to this. seriously

  • notice how they power up the engines just before touchdown....

  • @Knife715 in case they miss the rod, they can take off again!

  • Sea is like plate!! Beatiful.

  • nice landing

  • Sounds like a vacuum cleaner, lol

  • @jmclarke1

sort of vacuum cleaner ..but use to sweep cities at once :P

  • @KKHANK2 The S-3 didn't do much city sweeping. In this video it's most likely serving as a tanker.

  • @jmclarke1 Thats because secretly, all vacuum cleaners are ex-navy jets...

  • @jmclarke1 haha funny you say that, we used to call these planes "Hoover" because of the sound they make. . . but you should hear em at high power, haha.

  • @jmclarke1 That must be a hell of a vacuum cleaner you have ^_^

  • @jmclarke1 well they both suck hard to make the loud piched noise...

  • @Tj1056 true

  • Wow, almost as hard as Top Gun on the NES.

  • Landing a jet aircraft on an aircraft carrier is more akin to a controlled crash than an actual landing as done at a conventional landbased airfield.

  • These pilots are cool but they can get so full of themselves it's not even funny.

  • damn if you miss those bungee cords, your gone :S

  • @tiagandremo no you arnet. notice how he throttles up just before landing. thats incase he misses the bungee cords. the he can go around and try again

  • @tiagandremo Unless their engines are burning down they have no problem getting in the air again if they miss the bungy cords. Simly the afterburner will take them at such high speed, that they can duck abit and pull up again

  • @tiagandremo no they wont fall off the edge of the plane they will keep goin wants the plane hits the deck and the cord it goes to full throttle so if they miss the cord they will try for a take 2. go to the part in this video when he lands here the engine

  • "mail call"

  • Viking?

  • Funny how this pilot puts about as much effort into this as I would into making a sandwich. Nothing but respect for carrier pilots and to all who served in the armed forces all over the world.

  • what plane was that?

  • @admiralPs

    Think its a Viking.

  • I would be shit scared to do this...

  • WOW i didnt think it was reall i thought i was still watching tom clancys hawxs!!

  • thats fuckin dangerous man..wowo..i got goosebumps

  • I love to fly and I like fast things. But while watching this, I got sick and threw up my beefaronis on the dog. Which in turn ATE the vomit! Sick! If this wasnt scary, what about landing at night! Not me, UH UHHH!!! No thanks. Have a good day. I have to do therepy now....

  • i found myself holding on and i was only sitting in my kitchen!!

  • this is photoshoped

  • How strong are the G-forces during the landing?

  • @CO200M Since your speed is at about 130 knots its gonna be fairly low, almost non existent. I'm not entirely sure though.

  • Phew. And now imagine night, in a storm with heavy seas. Respect.

  • That is sick. Great video and sick :-)

  • This is strange to watch as a student pilot, on land you reduce power and stall right as you land. Not here, he just FLYS into the ship and it catches him. Love it!

  • @hunterhalo2 Nope! My father used to talk about how ballsy you have to be to be a navy pilot...they dont flair to land...They go full power b4 landing in case they dont catch!

    Takes balls of freakin Dolomite.

  • watching this make me feel dizzy and that's why not everyone can be a jet fighter pilot

  • Comment removed

  • youve got balls if you do this everyday in real life

  • @loopyboopoo1

    Brass balls to be exact.

  • what plane is it ?

  • @TalTxD It's plane it probably S-3 Viking. I met the cockpit;)

  • good

  • yes its a viking. I dont know why someone downed your comment.

  • great...never heard the engine going up and down so much, in regular airplanes , sounds more stable....

  • take balls!!

  • its interesting how they speed up as soon as they touch, scared of not hooking the hook......

  • yeah, haha, wouldn't wanna miss and have to wait for the engines to spool up :P

  • thats me in the yellow shirt.....

    PO3 ABE CV-67 87-91

  • I cant belev it how do they do it in real!!!

  • Pure skill.Well done.

  • amen, man. beatiful landing, caught the 3rd wire. Too bad they retired the E-3 (its an E-3 right?)

  • wow nice footage

  • Hey - Who the @#$% left the damn vacuum cleaner running during this video??!!

  • It's called the engine.

  • It's a joke, dude - on the boat we called them the "Hoover..."

  • kinda does sound like one :D

  • @PolarSun1 That's awesome - "303 Hoover ball, six point three"... "Roger ball"

  • These guys are the real thing and I thank them for their service.

  • I landed an F18 Hornet on a carrier at the first attempt and got an 'OUTSTANDING' message from the bridge. But hey, that was just a flight simulator, these guys do it for real - respect!!!!

  • @UFOIST hahaha im thinkin "oh shit thats awesome i can only do that in flight si.... oh..." hahaha

  • @UFOIST lol

    What flight simulator

  • @the4clusters -thanks - going back to 1991 the flight sim was F/A-18 Hornet by graphic simulations for mac LCII (laughter ensues). The hard drive was 80mb with 8mb ram and a graphic realism in the realms of 'jerkovision'. Looking at hi-res flight sims today is frankly breathtaking.

  • @UFOIST If you like flight simulators google "flightgear" it's a free flight sim, it's awesome for the fact it's free

And it includes carrier landings :D

  • Now do that at twice the speed as they have to do with fighter jets...anyway you look at it though, it's still tricky. I used to fly aircrew in E2's...many cats and traps in those...landing speed about the same as these S3's.

  • WOW theres skill for ya

  • it never occurred to me that jet planes would have windscreen wipers!

  • Absolutely incredible. What amazing skill!

  • agreed

  • That must be very difficult.

  • Sweet!

  • I could have done that with both hands tied behind my back and my eyes closed, big deal..just kidding.Awesome!

  • Its an S-3 viking

  • man...he made it seems like so easy. All I can do is play the simulator even with that I couldn't done it with that kind of approach....

  • It must be a hell of a feeling stoping so quickly. And also the acceleration when taking off.

  • Thx for the Video ,I've only seen it from the side when hitting the deck (RoofRat VA-93 USS MIDWAY ),GREAT to See it from the pilots view THX !!!!!

  • i would guess an e2c

  • BAD ASS!!!!

  • awesome, couldnt be better!

  • That is either an S-3 Viking or an A-6/EA-6B (Intruder/Prowler.) Very nice.

  • Its a S-3 Viking "Hoover", thats why it sounds like a vaccum haha

  • Intruders and prowlers windscreens are round, I would say it's a Viking...

    AL (from France)

  • holy crap that is amazing... any idea the plane?? interesting how they go full throttle when they hit... makes sense so if the hook doesn't catch theyll keep on goin... nice vid anyways

  • spot on, thats exactly why they do it. These people are crazy now, so imagine a night landing....
