First, we aren't talking about religion in general, we are speaking of a particular religion: Orthodox Christianity. Second, the correlation between explicitly religious governments and mass slaughter and war is 11%. The correlation between explicitly atheistic governments and mass slaughter is over 60%.

Stalin slaughtered millions of Orthodox Christian priests, monks, nuns, and laity simply because they were Orthodox Christians. In fact, it is Stalin's atheism which led to the Orthodox Church being called the Church of the Martyrs. In our modern age, it is not religious governments which institute mass religious slaughter, it is atheistic govts.

The US killed three million people in Vietnam, but the vast majority were either regulars of north vietnam or vietcongs. I don't count those as victims of atrocity. When American presidents decided to bomb the rice fields in North Vietnam, knowing that they would only kill women and children, those are counted as genocide.
