Mr. Jenkinson, while knowledgable, is an apologetic historian. So what if Jefferson owned slaves? Half the country did. In other words he was a man of his times. 100 years from now people are going to look at us and say the same things about certain issues. Why can't we look at historical figures for what they are? Men and women with mistakes, flaws and opinions (while not popular today) of their time. We should study the ideas of these people that still hold true today. Slavery is gone.
Well, I think Mr Jenkinson was wrong. Now it is into the 21st century, and now more and more people have been looking to the ideologies and writings of Thomas Jefferson, especially now with Ron Paul, who in my opinion is the Thomas Jefferson of the day.
I believe in a Hamiltonian society, Jefferson is made to look like a scoundrel by design. The fact is Jefferson is the spirit of the United States. Forget what these "intellectuals" tell you!
When he was asked about the rumors of his affair with Sally Hemmings, Jefferson answered, "A man who is not afraid of the truth, has nothing to fear from lies." Deliberately vague, but insinuating that the rumor was false. Personally, I like to think they had a relationship, but kept it a secret for political reasons.
@ShawnRavenfire Yes, very probable. In the end, we don't know. But, for political reasons? Well, this was after his presidency, and he never returned to DC again, and took great joy in being separated from the tumults of the political world.
Sally Hemmings was just a communist progressive attack by Democrats on our history. It's part of their hate America narrative that this nation was founded by white wealthy European racist bigots. I choose not to focus on race as I am not a racist.
So how do you explain the enslavement of black Africans in North America by people of European descent? It sounds to me like you simply choose to believe what makes you most comfortable, rather than what is historical fact. Your denial on this, and your rather ridiculous and unfounded contention that Democrats hate America, I see as far more destructive to the fabric of our nation than confronting painful truths. .
@RootsinBrooklyn You should be aware that Jefferson was comparable to modern day Libertarians. Washington was comparable to modern day Libertarian/Conservatives. All were either Libertarian or Conservative. Conservative in strong military non intervention in foreign affairs unless directly in conflict with Americas security. Absolutely not one founding father could be compared with the modern day Democrat/Progressive.
@RootsinBrooklyn On what you believe of the founding fathers? They well knew the horrors of slavery. Slavery at the time of early America was widely still a common place of blacks enslaving blacks in Africa. They purposely had the amendment of that slaves were only 1/3 I believe of humans not because of they were not worthy, rather that the south would have a larger representation in the Republic and therefore slavery could never be abolished. It was too soon to start that battle after the war!

Slavery was obtruded on the Colonies by King George III. Jefferson inherited slaves - it was against the law to free them. When it was permitted for the self-supporting, freed slaves must leave the State within a year.
Jefferson was an oligarchical hypocritical agrarian hack...the man who stood for meritocracy and the sacredness of inalienable Rights by his words and actions is the orphan from the west indies who brought the ideals of the Revolution to reality. Hamilton is the Founder we owe so much to. Is it any wonder that Washington refused to talk to Jefferson after 1793 yet til the day he died he was on close terms with Hamilton?
I love The Jefferson Hour!! And the best part is Jefferson's religious views...he and Lincoln were our best Presidents and neither believed in the divinity of christ. I LOVE that fact.
I love Jenkinson and the Jefferson Hour. Nitpicking, but I wish when he did live appearances, he would get a more accurate outfit. Oh well....I like Jefferson's deist views though.

"I do not believe he rose bodily into heaven on the third day". [sic]
Lol, Clay Jenkinson made a blunder there. Jesus (supposedly) rose bodily from the grave on the third day, but ascended to heaven forty days later.

The discussion on race and racism are good. The podcast is much more up to date and worth listening to.

The Sally Hemmings rumor is a false one. It was a rumor to destroy Jefferson's character started by one of Hamilton's newspapers.
