  • she means we all have some problem that we most of us keep inside..but some people show it on the outside

  • I think of my parents when i listen to this. My mother died oct. 14, 2011. I miss you mom!

  • @karelleimena I'm sorry for your loss...I still have my mom with me - God bless her - However, I lost my younger sister to cancer last November...I miss her more than words could describe...

  • @billygoyboy sorry for your loss too. There was something wrong with my mom's pancreas. She was to old for operation. The whole family stood around her bed when she died. She was the wind beneath our wings!

  • lovely

  • I didn't know about this performance until I attended a training session this morning. This video summed up the training so beautifully. Bette Midler's ability reach the hearts of the audience. John Prine's "Hello in There", that always touches me. Emmett Kelly Sr's Weary Willy, the perfect picture of silent loneliness and isolation. WOW.

  • what is a fried egg??? (I think she doesn't mean an actual fried egg!?)

  • @thorwaldjorgensen

It means we get older and as we age, things like fried eggs on our heads don't matter anymore what people think! I understand this now I am heading to 60...LOL

  • @thorwaldjorgensen It's something we all carry around with us, that's "not quite right".

  • everytime I hear this, it strikes a chord deep within me that I know I will never forget

  • is she crying ..or it just me

  • @lwest20 I THINK IT IS ALOT OF US

  • Yes, I am in tears right now. And I'm also wondering if that is Emmett Kelly. He certainly looks like other photos I've seen.

  • This rendition makes me cry, every time I hear it...so sentimental...Bette is the best

  • Is that the famous clown Emette kelly? I remember he started making television appearances back then.

  • One of my favourite Bette songs.

  • I heard this song a long time ago.

I now take care of elderly people... the best way I know how to.

Let's not forget about our older people, just listen with your heart.

    And serve the same way.

    We owe them that.

And, if we live long enough maybe someone will care to listen to us.

    Keeping us in good company.

  • hello there!! how are you dearie? hello there!

  • a great song about being old and lonely....so sad....but true...onfortunatly!

  • wow. my god. this woman. perfect. love only. all my love to her.

  • i saw this long ago and it made such an indelible impression. thank you for uploading this clip of a beautiful, and amazing performance. xoxo

  • Divoon!

  • Sorry for being stupid but could someone explain the fried egg to me. I have listened and don't get it. Sorry for being a dumb arse. x

  • @TheatreFan001 It's a metaphor for being wounded or damaged in some way, of knowing that you don't quite belong or fit in. This song intro - if you get it - is beautifully constructed to take you laughing from the rediculous and absurd to the universal pain we all - not just the elderly - experience of being separate and alone. Having seen this live in a concert version, I can tell you that, for me, Midler is a story teller extroardinaire and has a way of grabbing you and puuling you in.

  • wow, everyone go listen to Prine...Prine's version cuts through the heart

  • John Prine, who wrote the song, gets me right in the heart with this one. He's an amazing songwriter and performer. For me, Bette doesn't do it at all. But for those who she touches with her version, that's great too. The message is the same.

  • wow, she really nailed this song. Nailed it right through the heart, and killed it. WTF? Old people are sad clowns? two thumbs down - find John Prine's video, he wrote the song, no need for anyone else to sing if.

  • @fishboi1987 HAHAHA - your post was so profound you hit the POST button twice? Find John Prine's original version of this song, its right here on youtube, he wrote it back in the 70's. Its not about Dementia, its about old people being lonely. In the original song, his wife Loretta sits and stares out the back door screen all day, and they dont talk to each other. You insult me ? you have no clue yourself!

  • I'm glad that you now realize what it is truly about. So let me refer back to your first comment about how "old people are sad clowns" . Midler was not trying to make fun of old people or even give a comparison. She was simply using the clown who is a pantomime as a metaphor. I have a clue. Thank you.

  • you THINK you're listening to someone tell a funny story about a crazy lady until you realize they've broken your heart with the reason why........OMG.......some people wear them on the outside and some people wear them on the inside.....and if you listen closely you can hear a woman in the audience gasp when she gets it

  • one of the greats

  • Yeah but Bette is the best - good, better Bette!

  • Incredible. So moving!

  • Fabulous. Her stuff never gets old. Thanks for posting!

  • This has always touched me and made me cry. I work with the elderly and it is very true. Thank you for this.

  • I hope I never wake up and wanna put a fried egg on my forehead.

  • i love this, its such a lovely story she starts with. makes me want to hear it again and again. :)

  • This song was perfect with Emmet Kelly.

  • How does the sound quality get like that?

  • Weird joke.

  • She is AMAZING to say the least. I love her sooo soooo sooooooo much. There will never be anyone like the Divine Miss M.

  • Bette Midler is a lady of many talents!

What she does is rare to find these days!

Amazing, heart felt, and full of emotion.

    Fantastic!

    x

  • in his wildest of dreams

  • Bravo Bette

we all have a fried egg to burden us, at some point

  • I have this show! I taped it on beta on Wednesday, December 7, 1977! I just watched this tonight! Bette and Dustin Hoffman wrote the beautiful song Shoot The Breeze. They played it on this show.
