She's so pretty. My parents used to have mute swans on their river, but the game wardens shook their eggs every season so they wouldn't reproduce and, I think, eventually killed the swans themselves, which made all of us angry. They didn't want the mute swans to get in the way of the native trumpeter swans. But the mute are so much more beautiful.
Ralph is the swan who lives in our pond. He comes to my patio doors and watches for me to come to the door, but when I open the door he slowly walks off the patio. He is so cute, I love it, but he is making a big mess on my patio, and the doors. I don't feed him because I know that would keep him coming back. He comes several times a day and he will just lay down on my rug until I walk him off. How do I stop him from coming up without scaring him. I love to watch him in my back yard.
I have two Sebastopol geese who live inside. The mess is right... but I am going to get around to diapering. In the meantime, there are incontinent pads all over the place... drop cloths, if you pardon the expression... Its overwhelming. Luckily I'm single right now... I definitely would scare away any suitors with indoor geese who scream, run, deman, eat, poop, eat, drink, poop, hoot, honk, run, fall all over each other, flap their wings, and did I mention poop?!
Now be honest, when pulling up to a stop light what are the others drivers reaction when they see a swan sticking it's head out of the window rather then a dog? Or when you let it out of the car and people see it?
Lol swans aren't even aggresssive when you aren't obnoxious to them yourself. I've fed swans several times from my hand and accidentally got bit, but it didn't even hurt cause the bird didn't intend to hurt me either.
@levelat350 The swan lives in a pond near my office. When she become injured by a fishing hook, she ended up at the animal hospital. We paid her X-ray and vet bills, and signed papers to become her registered care taker on file with Cobb County. She continues to live at the lake and we feed her on a daily basis. So depending on how you look at it, yes, legally, she is now our responsibility. She likes to come indoors from time to time, but it gets too messy so we don't make a habit of this.
@SteelHyaena Yes and no. I do pet her on the head from time to time while I'm feeding her, but most of the time she will snap at my hand. Its more of a playful action, not aggressive or defensive or anything like that. When mute swans feel threatened, they tend to attack with their wings, not their heads.
@infinitysends I know swans can clobber with their wings, for sure! I was at a park with my parents... I was like ten, and I really wanted to pet one of them. I got whacked and nipped for my trouble! Lucky you, to have one as a companion, though--nips and all! Give her a treat from me!
@MrFranciscoFidalgo Yes, they are extremely smart. Yes, they are extremely dirtily. No, they are not "dirt". Yes, it is very safe to have a pet swan under the appropriate environmental living conditions; AKA an outdoor pond, not an indoor cage.
I have a small lake in my house, but I fear some swans I might put there may run away on winter because of the cold, that goes below 0 for many months.
@MrFranciscoFidalgo She dislikes the winter because it becomes difficult if not impossible to gather food from the lake when it freezes over. When this happens, she walks around the local area, knocking on office doors with her beak. I guess this is her way of asking for food. So we keep her well fed with special swan food. Had her with us a few days ago, just so she could get out of the cold weather for a little while. But she is happier in the lake, even in winter, so there she stays.
The first time I saw a goose, it was being attacked by an alpha-male (If geese have those), it was relentless, and would've killed it if I hadn't intervened. It was kind of frustrating too, since I was at a well-known park and there were about thirty onlookers, that I was that only one to go into the museum 50 feet away that owned the pond and tell them what was happening, and I was only six, when they carried it inside, I wasn't sure if they were able to save it, but at least something was done
I'm looking everywhere to find a mute swan, but they seem to only be sold in pairs. where did you get yours? also, when you take him/her to the lake, there's no question it will come back??
Yes, they live in pairs but my swan's other is no longer. Swans can't live in doors. Mine stays at the lake. I had her in my office for several days once but then had to return her. She is a wild swan, just friendly.
Anyone who likes swans should read William Butler Yeats' poem "Wild Swans at Coole."

The only reason that I can think of as to why this swan is so docile & easy going about a ride in a car is due to her trust in you.
This speaks volumes about you.
