    WHAT? Well, for a start its nothing to do with a wastegate you moron. It's compressor stall, the air pressurising in charge carrier and flowing backwards through the turbo, the blades stall and chop the air, and it comes out backwards through the induction kit. Causes turbo lag and with high pressure [high boost] WILL bend shafts/snap and bend blades. Dump valve just stops the turbo spinning backwards and stops it spooling down so much off throttle. Better responce etc

  • Compressor cannot possibly spin backwards! Impossible. Its a fixed shaft conected to the turbine. It slows down, but cant spin backwards!

  • People realy need to learn!, this is just turbo "flutter" ,and is totally harmless! Its air passing back across the compressor wheel and creats a choppy sound, thats all. Manufacturers fit dump valves that recirculate or cleverly designed airboxes to hide this noise as many woudl find it anoying. I have run like this for years , no dump valve and never had any turbo problems, Remember the old Audi Group B Quatrro had no dump valve either. Do not confuse this sound to true compressor surge.

  • @jason12300 I cant see that ever happening, the compressor nut is a reverse thread to stop that happening. As long as it done up correctly it wont move

  • its bad for journal bearing turbo's. ball bearings also but they can take the abuse longer than a journal type

  • this chatter is called compressor surge and despite what people say its not good for turbo,boost is forced back out thru the turbo and shortens the life of the bearings in the turbo... down to a few months..i know coz it happened to me twice.

  • maybe the turbo you had was not good. look up mitsubishi starion egnine bay photos. they never came with bov's...i owned one

  • nope it was not the turbo itself... both times was replaced with brand new CT26 turbos

  • It's the turbo inlet letting air out the wrong way. If you ever hear someone talking about "wastegate chatter" it's a pile of shit! Haha. The chatter you hear is where not enough air escapes out of the engine or the wastegate/dump valve so it surges back out the other way through the turbo and out the inlet pipe. It's not bad for turbos!

  • after $15k they'll run 11s. $5k will get you 13-14s. But that's pretty much as fast as they'll go. They're not terribly great base platforms. If you're looking to mod, go with something more common, like a skyline or supra or something because there's a lot more aftermarket parts available for them. Starlets are good for those who like the underdog. If you like the idea of taking a tiny 1.3L up against hulking V8s and serving their ass to them on a platter - then these are the cars for you.

  • You can get a 1.3 turbo as standard. Woudln't be that expensive. They're really quick. My bro had one but he slipped on ice and wrapped it round a pole.

  • also known as compressor surge. It means that the air between the turbo and the throttle body is trying to vacate back to the atmosphere via the only way it can - through the turbo. It means the turbo goes from spinning really fast one way, to really fast the other way in a very short space of time. In the long run, this wears out the turbo. So theoretically - if you LOVE the sound, and don't mind forking out a new turbo every few months... then there's nothing wrong with it.

  • No problem at all unless running over 1 bar (15psi) It's not chatter, it's not wastegate, that's is a myth, It is simply air passing back across the compressor, no damage unless real high boost. You always get it without a BOV/dump valve fitted, standard air filter boxes help disguise the sound. I guess this has a large cone filter on the turbo.

  • and it is the wast gate causing that to make that chatter as you release the throttle the air is pushing through the wastegate through

    to the turbo then out of the air filter, the best air filter to have for this is a mushroom filter

    Its the compressor blades forcing against the stalled air between the turbo and the throttle body.

  • it aint bad for the turbo at all at this level of boost its just air going back through the compressor wheel after all. i had one of these (ace little car btw) and sticking a valve on it actually made it slower

  • I don't think it is a BOV that is creating that sound (if that's what your after)..It is just the air going back through the compressor wheel of the turbo after the throttle is shut.

    A BOV would stop the above from ocurring.

  • Well back then it was just standard 0.65 bar of boost. Now im running 0.75bar as im waiting to fit my JAM BCC and my FPR before i take it up to 1 bar.
