  • very cool : )

  • look at his face at 7:01. They clearly fucked him up in the middle of his block voicing lines

  • THIS IS SICK. COOLEST MOTHERFUCKERS EVER!!! Thanks for posting!!

  • Nevermind... Just saw to the very end. Lol Thanks for posting this

  • Whos on Tenor?

  • Good job screwing up the piano solo horn section

  • @MichaelBrandonSax If you mean the hits in the bridge, they're supposed to do that.

  • @Thundermonkeyms they dont come in the bridge, you dont know shit

  • @MichaelBrandonSax I would appreciate it if you didn't take such apparent offense to my comments. I'm SORRY I misheard it. Jeez. -_-

  • @Thundermonkeyms I'm sorry you misheard it too. Next time don't be a wise ass when you're wrong.

  • @MichaelBrandonSax Only one of us is being a wise ass, and I'm pretty sure its not me. -_-

  • @Thundermonkeyms

Hi! This is the only filmed version of this I could find - which is why I put it up!

To my ears it follows the original 1963 Ugetsu recording pretty closely - in fact the intro horn phrase is a direct lift (as is a lot more of the playing!).

About that ensemble part you hear at 7.01 - it was played behind the solos of Freddy Hubbard Curtis Fuller and Wayne Shorter (who wrote it) on the original - but Interestingly enough was not played behind pianist Cedar Walton's solo!

    Bob

  • @bobjazz11 Ah! I wondered about that.

Thanks for the info. :) I did know that it was written by Wayne Shorter.

  • One of the amazing Shorter compositions written for the Messengers! "Ugetsu" is no doubt among the top ten Messengers albums along with "Moanin'", "Free For All" and "Mosaic".

  • it's Johnny O'Neal on piano.

  • I'm probably wrong but i'm one hundred percent sure that's scott joplin on piano....

but hasn't 'jass' changed over the years, and still is the greatest art form, well greatest period

  • @atadsatirical

You will be pleased to know that you are one hundred percent correct in that you are one hundred percent wrong ... It aint Scott Joplin - or if it is, they played a terrible joke on him when they buried in 1917 .. You are also one hundred percent correct when you write it is still the greatest art form. ... You obviously have excellent taste

  • @bobjazz11 hahahahahah i was joking about the joplinthing hahahaha way passed his time, but i was trying to say how great it is that such an artform as this can transform/develop throughout so many years and still maintain its brilliance

  • @atadsatirical

    Couldn't agree more ...

    Love your channel name!

    :-)

  • Ahhhh This is so HOT.

    Who's on tp?

  • @alphaJA Terrence Blanchard

  • This live hit must have been after the 1982 album "Oh By The Way". I had to look up some of the personnel to be sure. I recognized Charles Fambrough and Donal Harrison on alto. I had to confrim if that really was Terence Blanchard on trumpet because he is so young here! Man is he killin! Bill Pierce (Professor at Berklee College of Music) on Tenor sounds nice too! Great clip!

  • i liked the peterson like piano solo

  • R.I.P. CF.

  • deep soul.

  • sorry...computer gremlin: when i wrote that yesterday my screen was showing the comment thread from a different tune somehow...

  • Comment removed

  • @zhokandawe

Yeah theyre probably checking out Justin Beiber or something innit

  • Love the bass player! Who is it? Edit: Ah Fambrough!

  • Love the bass player! Who is it?

  • @midwestmedia Charles Fambrough

  • What a great piece of music. Brilliant theme. essence of that soulful bop Blakey so mastered. One by One ....great title.

  • YEAH BABY!!!

  • yeah baby!!!

  • Art Blakey for ever...

  • suuuppperrrrbbbb!xxxxxx

  • To me, Lee Morgan was the greatest trumpeter ever to pass thru the Messengers. Its hard to gauge all the others like Blanchard after hearing Lee.

  • @mistano1

It's funny you should say that because Cosby himself is a jazz drummer.

  • Une merveille! Merci!

  • John O'neal piano

  • Jean Toussaint is a terribly under-rated tenor player. He is definitely my favorite of all of Blakey's 80's saxophonists and possibly the best after Wayne. When Blakey carried 2 tenors in the band the difference is remarkable. Jean was amazingly mature when in the Messengers, opposed to some of the horn players Blakey had during that time.

  • truly one of the great messengers bands, note how harrison begins his solo like wayne's original solo (from the riverside ugetsu lp) and terence is so amazing, great sound phrasing and downright funky, btw the changes to this is for albert are available, i have them somewhere, i'll dig them up for you..

  • Nice composition. From that period there is also 'This Is For Albert' (Riverside album 'Caravan'). I would give my left arm to have the chord changes of that one.

  • @BuckshotLaFunke

    This is for albert changes:

    A1-A2 : Gmaj7 - Abmaj7/G - Am7/G - G7b9sus4->3

    C-7 F7 - Bbmaj7 Eb7 - Abmaj7 - D7alt

    B :Db7sus4 - Db7sus4 - Gmaj7/C# - Gmaj7/C#

    B-7 - E7#5 - A-7 - D7b9

    A3 : same as A1

    Cheers :-)

  • FastBebop, thank you so very much! I would never have found these changes! It makes me very happy to finally be able to play this tune, which has been circling in my head for more than 30 years.

As I promised to give my left arm: what can I do for you? Are there jazz tunes or standards you would like to have the chord progressions of? Please let me know. All the best to you!

  • @BuckshotLaFunke

These are in "The World's Greatest Jazz Fakebook", if you want the 3 voices melody. One of the best fakebook ever by the way.

  • @BuckshotLaFunke

You know, you thanked me already, and that's quite enough! But seriously, you need to get this fakebook! And transcribe by ear too, in thirty years, even 1 chord per year, you would've had the chords a long time ago ;-)

    Cheers,

    FB

  • @BuckshotLaFunke

Google "fakebook index", you'll know if a tune is edited or not.

    Cheers

  • I like it better at this faster tempo

  • TIme Will Tell - Wynton Marsalis and Art Blakey

  • Jean Toussaint on Tenor Sax

  • Terence Blanchard, Billy Pierce (?)...who's on tenor? Fambrough on bass? No idea on the pianist...

  • Nah - Terence B of course, but Donald 'Duck' Harrison (alto) and Jean Toussaint (tenor)

This is the band Art had after the Marsalis brothers moved on.

  • Was it my misspelling of "Ugetsu" or something related o the earlier discussions?

    peter

  • No

It's my all time favorite album too!!

    Bob

  • I am almost speechless. "Ugetsu" is so terribly underrated musically, historically and empirically. I rarely discuss jazz with friends because they have very limited musical tastes. I am ecstatic to know someone shares my affinity from Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers' performances captured in Japan. In fact, when I DJ I love to mix in the intro to "One By One." Thanks for finding this gem and sharing it!

  • @nerviosa1173 I don't have any friends to talk jazz with either....I would LOVE to hear your DJ stuff!

Most of my friends actually call me "closed minded"!LOL! They don't get it at all.....

  • If I ever had was forced to answer the painfully juvenile and banal question "What is your all time favorite song?", I would not hesitate to respond "One By One" off Ugestu by.....you get the idea. Can t write, must listen...

  • See general description of this clip on top right of page!!

    :-)

    Bob

  • this alt sax man looks like tony williams who former the miles band drummer, isn't he?

  • hey guys ! what Messengers version it is? what about the gang??

  • I love this song! I played it a few years ago with a jazz band I was in and it got me hooked on the Jazz Messengers. Fantastic tune.

  • Sweet! I just heard about this album on Jazz FM 91.1 last night and became a new fan instantly! Love Freddie and Wayne and already a big fan of theirs but but Art Blakey sure nuf got some hot stix!

  • freddie is a motherfucker

  • its a great song. im actually learning him right now!!!!

its a great instrument mother fucker!!!!

  • This tune is NOT "Ugetsu" but W.Shorter´s"One by one".Thanks for posting it, Bob!Peace,V.

  • Hey V

Boy! did I get that wrong!!! - Yep, it's the first track on the live album - and also this opening sax lick here is a straight lift from Shorter solo!.....:( Thanks!

    :) Bob
