@BMOVIEMIKE It's a toss up between Magnum Force and Dirty Harry. I loved watching both films growing up, but as of right now? I'd probably go with Magnum Force if I had to choose between the two.
Excellent Review. Were you watching Dirty Harry week on AMC too? ;-) Just watched the blu-ray of Dirty Harry last week and I was blown away with all the San Fransisco shots. I am proud to say that I own all Dirty Harry films on VHS.
That brings back some memories....I know it's a retrospective thing but seeing 'Hutch' as a bad guy was very odd but great. I really want to watch this again now
@lampyman101 I like David Soul, he was one of those cool 1970's actors that didn't do much after the decade was over. But still, I liked him in Magnum Force, and I really liked him in Salem's Lot... I was pressed for time on this review, so I sort of glossed over mentioning his role in the film, as well as a few other up and coming actors, including a young (and topless) Suzanne Somers :)
@thebrb30000 I often don't spend too much time mentioning actors in my review as a matter of course, I prefer to talk about the movie in my reviews rather than celebs unless it has some special significance. His is a notable face in this though, it's kinda fun seeing him as the bad cop.
@lampyman101 I guess it depends on the actor and the performance, but yeah, I usually try to focus more on the filmmaking and cultural impact of the film in question. But you're right, David Soul is notable in this one. I love that scene where Eastwood says, "You boys just killed a dozen people in a week. What are you going to do for an encore?" And David Soul, cold as hell, says, "Kill a dozen more."
@AccountSpawnedinHell They're both great films, and I kinda go back and forth as to which one I like better. I do think that the original Dirty Harry has the best villain, the Scorpio. He was such a creep. Remember when he's on the school bus, singing "Row, row, row your boat"? Lol, what a scumbag
@thebrb30000 After Magnum Force all the rest of the sequels really disappointed me, The Enforcer was rubbish...I hate Tyne Daly, Sudden Impact was I Spit on Your Grave (Clean Cut) rip off, The Dead Pool I saw once and once was enuff LOL! That bus scene in DH really disturbed me as a kid, my favorite line from the killer in DH was "I've changed my mind, I'm going to let her die, hubba hubba Pig Bastard!"
@AccountSpawnedinHell Sudden Impact was a TOTAL cleaned up version of I Spit On Your Grave, now that you mention it! She shoots them once in the head, and once in the groin, lol. I have vaguely kind memories regarding the Dead Pool. It's been awhile, but I'd have to watch it again. But yeah, Magnum Force is the best sequel, and there is a HUGE drop-off in quality between this film and The Enforcer
@tommytoploader Thanks for the great comments as always Tommy! Magnum Force is a great companion piece and counter balance to Dirty Harry and its various themes. You make an interesting observation about the ending to Dirty Harry. I always thought he threw away the badge because of his disgust towards the system, but maybe he was disgusted with himself for what the system turned him into? Either way, he somehow fished that badge out of the water for the sequel :)
@thebrb30000 That's what i mean about a ambigous ending. It could be his disgust at the system or the self realisation that in order to take Scorpio down he had to god to a level that made him no longer a cop, but a brutal killer, just like the criminals he's after. Or it could be both. I just never saw it as simplistic and pro vigilante justice as some people make it out to be.
Have you noticed that the same guy who plays the pimp, is the guy from the first films bank robbery?
@tommytoploader I did notice that about the pimp/bank robber. And also, if I'm not mistaken, the guy also has a role in The Enforcer. I always wondered about that, like maybe he was a producer on the films, and wanted to take on an acting role. But yeah, that always struck me as weird, lol
@thebrb30000 I belive it is also true that when Clint was the mayor of Carmel California he re-pealed two laws.
One that you couldn't eat ice cream in public and the other that you couldn't kiss your lady in public"
{Grit's teeth, Narrows eyes}
" You mean officer, i am here enjoying a cone and the company of my best Gal and you have a problem with that? Hmmmmm........Maybe i outta run for Mayor round here...? You feeling LICKY...Punk?"
First-class analysis as usual. You touched on all the reasons why I regard Magnum Force as superior to its predecessor. Eastwood always delivers in his performance.
@KajiCarson I very much like both films, but I do kinda lean toward Magnum Force. It's a little bit looser, and let's Eastwood flesh out the character a bit more than the first. That's why I'm under the impression that Eastwood "ghost-directed" this film, because it bears many similarities to his overall style of filmmaking.
I have always thought that the first films right wing fachist reputation was slightly unfair.
I can se why sensitive left wingers disliked it .
As a left winger myself, i have many friends who dispise Dirty Harry and cannot see why i like it.
To me this misses the point. Dirty Harry is really the story of a man sworn to combat an evil, but who's method's make him has bad as the evil he's fighting and ultimatley destroys himself morally to acomplish his goal.
Now, Barry, i am sure you don't, but when deciding to do a video discussion, do you like have a secret camera in my house and just pick out every film and dvd i own and love?
Top notch review { as always}, some slick work too. LOVE that Lalo Schiffren score.
It's by far the best sequal { although i have a soft spot for Dead Pool} and plays like the flip b-side to the first film's themes.
Really deepen's and expand's on the first film and the Harry charcter in a way that few sequals do.
This is probably my favorite one of the series.I think David Soul landed his role on "Starsky and Hutch" due to his performance in this film,as the rookie cop.Very good review Barry,Thanks!!
@munky2ube that's the one thing that I regret from my review, is that I should have talked more about David Soul. I was going to originally, but I was worried that I'd be treading into some serious "spoiler territory." Of course, it's highly likely that most of my subscribers have seen this film and know the plot spoilers already... but oh well, that just means more stuff to talk about in the comments section :)
@johnnyhorror92182 I agree. Easily the best sequel, and possibly better than the original. If not better, than certainly an excellent companion piece to the original
This my opinion this is the Best Dirty Harry Movie !!!! Dead Pool was good as well. Great review

@donovan1971 I love Gran Torino. It's a great Eastwood film, in front of and behind the camera.

Cont......That in itself is anything but a faschist message.
More a cautionary tale about the application of justice and the deffence of the vunerable in extreme circumstances.
To me that is more morally ambigous than an open right wing statment or message.
Something the sequal excellently pick's up and expands on as you so rightly point out.
Great stuff Barry, you pick a great and varied range of films and give superb, intelligent, insightfull and humerous critiques of them.
Peace
