I use to play this version all the time in my local estate pub 'Spotted Dog' in Hull, way in back 1993. (Was a very average dj). The punters use to want the Rod Stewart version, but I give em this one instead ! Still love it to this day and Graham Coxon's guitar at about 1.42 sounds on purpose 'sloppy but neat'. Thanks LOOPID77 for uploading this !
@modsheff1 Any band that is not a bunch of schoolkids saying: "Listen to us - ain't we got attitude like them Americans we try an' sing like". Pathetic.
This cover was recorded by Blur almost two decades ago, and the original version was written and recorded by by Rod Stewart four fucking decades ago. Blur subsequently went on to enjoy universal acclaim for ten years after recording their Maggie May cover. So get a clue, cheesedick.
I know - this is a very run-of-the-mill cover of a shit song. But you commented as if it a) had only just been released and b) showed Blur at their absolute best.
I love this version, I have for a long, long time now. But my gosh, would I be wrong to say that the backing instrumentation sounds like late '70s FLEETWOOD MAC?!?! Listen to Graham's guitar at 3:29 and I swear that sounds like something Lindsey Buckingham would have done!
i adore both versions. damon does it with a wistful nostalgia of a sweet schoolboy all grown up, thinking back to better times with maggie. pogues' is shockingly tortured, more tumultuous "adult" relationship gone wrong with maggie. both are valid it's all a matter of taste.
These guys obviously don't have a clue of what this great song is about! Rod's is the only rendition that works for this one! And of course; The Pogues' as well...
If youre gonna cover a guy with a great voice (say what you like about his taste-in song choice, women or clothes) you would want to either not change much but have a better voice, or if you have a tinny crap voice but lots of imagination, production talent and taste do something completely different. But if youre just gonna take to many downers and plod on as if its a 9 to 5 you shouldnt waste youre or anyone elses time...
but he wrote it and composed it, right? i mean, if you think about it, most every cover's got some elements of the song and lacks others. in a way all the covers of it are more about seeing what little bits of rod influenced the band that's covering him the most
It was on the "RUBY TRAX - The NME'S Roaring Forty" 3 CD set released in 1992.

Blur kicks ass, but this is terrible.

I prefer Graham's Solo but as whole yeah its nothing compared to the original but then it was never meant to be anything more than a b-side.

One of cases when a cover is better. Another one is "Living For The City" by Da' Books.
