BTW, Friedman is a lying about the growth at the bottom. The wage of the poor have grown 18% in 30 years which is less than 1% a year and slower than the growth of the rate of inflation. The Middle Class, in the same time period, have only seen their wealth go up 40% in 30 years which is slightly over 1% a year and slower than the rate of growth. In that same time frame, the cost for education, health care, and housing has shot up 600% or more. In other words, the supply siders are LYING.
What's your family's adviser means when he says "it's taken us a long time to get where we are" is that it's taken plutocrats a long time to train so many Americans to vote against their economic interests for a party of, by, and for the 1%. Supply siders thought their days were over after they caused the Depression but once neocons taught them to tell what Leo Strauss called the "noble lie" to the masses, they rebuilt their power & started implementing their destructive tax codes and policies.

@poreofthemachine the government is the THE PEOPLE so, in essence, these rich people don't want to support the government with their fair share of taxes because they don't want the PEOPLE to have the same kind of influence or access as they wealthy do. If you give all the power to only a handful of people what do you expect will happen. Even the poorest American can hold the government more accountable than the rich in their ivory towers.

@MrDestruction25 he already has plenty of money. And it's not going to make him happier to have more. It's not going to give him a bigger penis. It's not going to help him avoid the growing swaths of America that is being left behind. All the money in the world doesn't make you immune to your own reality or your own shortcomings.

@bbukid in other words, America is turning into a third world country. Then we shouldn't be hiding behind some bogus sentiment of the "land of the opportunity" or some moral superiority over other nations especially when often invade other nations using that logic.

@19:40 That's exactly right, our realities are a direct result of our ability to MAKE BELIEVE. Its' good that this doc doesn't really point fingers. We aren't dealing with villains and scheming bad guys. Just people trying to make the right decisions without looking at the big picture. When that happens the 'good' choices for some become the wrong decisions for others. Raising awareness through documentaries like this is a big step in the right direction so people can come together and solve these issues instead of just pointing fingers.
Absolutely brilliant and oh so thought provoking. Job well done Jamie! Thank you for shining a light into dark, otherwise well protected corners of our society. You are indeed a "lucky guy". Not because of your pedigree but because you seen to have rare insight into human dignity. May your future be bright. :)
Is the complete, unedited footage of the interview with Milton Friedman available anywhere? I doubt very much that what was presented in the documentary is an accurate representation of the man and his ideas.
@ericclaptonismygod31 because giving money to charities, which often rely far more heavily on their govt funds than their donations, isn't actually as effective as PAYING YOUR TAXES. The states with higher tax rates actually provide better social services than the states that sometimes have the highest charity contributions. And that's because charity contributions aren't a reliable source of funding.
@ericclaptonismygod31 lol, you're an idiot. He's trying to show how spoiled YOU are. Not anyone else. Everyone else on here is probably living within their means, besides people that find it disgusting that Jamie is willing to expose what he was born into
@akademetri Ass. I am one of the 52% of net taxpayers. I live modestly, but would love to have been born rich. It just makes me angry when someone whines about their good fortune and KEEPS it. Give it away, or shut the fuck up!
@ericclaptonismygod31 yes, back in the 70's when the bill for the Vietnam War came in and the government didn't try and bother money from the Chinese, like Bush did, to pay for it. Sorry but the supply siders have destroyed the economy twice in less than a century. Why is that?
this film changed the way i look at the world. If humans don't change their ways, everything is going to start crumbling around us and God would take back everything he gave us and watch us perish in the fires of our own greed, and selfishness.
(Cont.) I would probably have the same mentality as them if I lived their life. However, there is a new generation coming up, and I'm sure they have a totally different approach.
the guy at 1:06:00.. there is no equality because we don't create equality. but we CAN. no one has to be a waiter, we could just use machines to perform the monotonous labor. and the only thing holding it back from happening is the fact that we have a labor for income system. I'm so surprised most of these people aren't open minded. but that is understandable, their entire lives have revolved around money, it is hard to think otherwise in that case.
YOU CAN'T JOIN THEM FOOL! THIS IS A GENERATIONS OF WEALTH CLUB ABD THEY CARE NOTHING ABOUT AMERICA EXCEPT TO KEEP THEM AS SLAVES. CAPITALISM IN AMERICA IS JUCK MADE IN ASIA/CHINA AND THEY OUT-SOURCE JOBS. THEY RATIONALIZE, JUSTIFY AND ARE CANCER IN THE AMERICA. THE ARE GREEDY BASTARDS. CAPITALISM IS A PROBLEM IN TODAYS TIMES!! NO JOBS NO MONEY TO PURCHASE AND THERE IS NO PRODUCTION. THEY RAPE THIS COUNTRY AND I WISH THEY COULD SINK ON A SHIP!
Friedman definitely didn't present his arguments as clearly as he would have 20 years ago. But I don't blame him for cutting off the interview. He doesn't have time for this intellectual midget.
@11notintheface doesn't matter how well he presents or used to present his arguments, in the end the ideology he has been advocating has proved itself to be self-destructing.
@focista6 Quite the opposite. I agree that the rich are afforded far too much protection. But the problem is not capitalism. The problem is government covering for them via subsidies, tax loopholes, bailouts (sounds like cliche rhetoric but you can't argue it's true), and other methods. If the market were simply allowed to work, the rich wouldn't have that kind of advantage. Not that I'm going to change anyone's mind in this thread or anything...
@11notintheface unfortunately the problem IS the system. profit is primary to the environment and even human health. on top of that, the majority of the population is forced to waste their lives working for the minority who possess all the wealth and in most cases acquired it through some kind of 'corruption'. since money is needed for life's necessities, and some people are simply unable to make enough, an array of social problems arise which we see today.
@11notintheface additionally, this doesn't just apply to the US. it is everywhere. in other places, the government might not even help the rich. everyone is too busy fighting to make money, and as a result become ignorant of any other alternatives.
@11notintheface And all those government preferences for corporatists is the design of the likes of Milton Friedman. In fact, after Katrina, he made the argument that New Orleans schools should be privatized or have far more privatization. And all that is is basically the state govt handing over education funds to charter schools who often do no better than public schools. Sorry, the market works when workers MAKE DECENT WAGES. Those wages are in DECLINE for the benefit of CEOs.
@11notintheface maybe because he was making completely false statements. He says that the wages for the poor have gone up. They actually haven't. Adjusted for inflation and rises in the cost of living, something any decent economists knows to do, the wages for the working class has gone down. The wages for the Middle Class has stagnated and their debt rates have skyrocketed.. He's not as confident because his ideas FAILED.
@HarrrySpider Why so agressive? Learn what you can from the movie and move on, be the change. Shouting and swearing will just push away more movies like this to happen and not help in any way.
"if you're always hiding from the problem, you're never going to find a solution"??? to those with extreme wealth, there IS no problem. Or maybe more accurately, they don't feel it's their problem.
The father seems so unable to communicate, I felt for him. He seemed to need his finance guy (first rate PRICK, he is) to articulate opposition to your film, and even HE can't put into clear words what EXACTLY is the problem with talking about it. It's like they're so embarrassed... why?
Excuse me but hasn't the economy gotten worse in the last 12yrs??? Or am I just in the wrong country. Last time I checked I live in the united states and the economy is going down the drain.
@ShadowCrashed81 one look at the convention for the wealthy families and a notice that nearly all if not all the families are WHITE confirms that's not entirely a false statement.
I notice that his father talked to him when that Bill the financial adviser was not there. And if my financial adviser spoke to my son the way that bill did I would not care who the hell he was I would sack him.
Rich people who pollute the environment or don't want money spent helping the environment don't realize one thing. The environment is home to many venomous animals. Those venoms, many still yet to be explored by science, hold the key to drugs that can treat illness like cancer, diabetes, alzheimers, parkinsons, stroke, epileplsy--and much more. The rich have illness and pain, too. But if they don't help nature, they won't have necessary drugs. You get back from life as you give.
How they get away with it is beyond me. They're pretty outnumbered when you come to think about it. 99% of us are getting shafted. Ever since Thatcher, the right have had it all their own way. People are thick.
You mean since the time tribal cultures became big and turned into city life? It's always been like this. Capitalism is a logical evolution of society within our historical context, but it is outlived it's usefulness. I'm not for ditching capitalism per se, but it needs some fundamental upgrades, starting with the role of government as the monopoly on force. All systems we have known the last 2000 years at least were basically the same. They were statist.
@MrNarchya capitalism doesn't drive our economy. Consumerism does. 2/3 of the American economy is based on consumerism and that consumerism functions best not when we reward middle men like Mitt Romney or blowhards like Friedman. It works best when we pay workers their worth and then some so they have disposable income to consume. The rich can only buy so many iPads. The new supply side system we have now is neo-feudalism.
@nixoniteful there was a man named Leo Strauss that, with Friedman, many neocons used as a guru. He said the role of the 99% (or the vulgar many as he called them) was support the needs of the 1% (or the superior few). But the 99% wouldn't take to kindly to knowing that was their role so in order to convince the 99% to support the needs of the 1% you have to tell them the "noble lie". And he thought the best lie was religion. The supply siders LIED to sell their neo-aristocracy.
This documentary is great in how it showcases the arrogant and sociopathic attitudes of the filthy rich , but most of all , it is encouraging how it gives a glimps of the different values and attitudes of the heirs of fortunes who see the injustice and inequality - It may be that the turning point in the world of corrupt wealth , will be the heirs who have up leveled consciousness to put away forever , the greed and fear that has made the world go around for far too long in the old way !
@rolynstone48 You sound like a new ager - Some people are just very smart to earn multi-billions of dollars because you didnt do it and they did!!! i call it smart - Nothing wrong with being rich tho :) Some people earned the money themselfs and those people deserve it !!! Dont throw every little rich bastard on one ugly hope !!! Altho im not speaking about those Rothschild and Rockefeller Dynasty - but the average human beings that bcame rich themselfs.
I don't think there is anything wrong with a smart person making a lot of money by being smart - but where I draw a line is HOW you made your money !
Money has a tendancy to highten fear of loss or fear of not having enough so it purpetually interrupts your peace and numbs your sensitivities to compassion for the less fortunate (or less smart) as you keep focused on what ever demands are upon you to ensure a steady flow (kind of like a junkie) of money !
@rolynstone48 But thats how ''society'' always have worked!! The only thing to break that ''cycle'' is to learn the lower and the middle class that we all can earn more money in our own ways so we lose that ''fear'' you are talking about it !! :) Its all about knowledgde - if you asked me :) -
@TELEFOON87 that's only the way it works in systems like feudalism where wealth is concentrated in the hands of the few. In fact, when the Middle Class through unions were able not only to garner decent pay but also a strong political voice, much of these massive wage disparities were erased or greatly minimized. It's no accident that when supply siders come back in the 80s and bring their neo-feudalism ideas back, the wealth gap jumps again just like they did before the Depression.
@TELEFOON87 Bill Gates Sr made the very important point that those who are rich in our society got rich off of public investments, public land, a publically educated workforce, and a publically funded infrastructure. Learn a little about the robber barons many of whom got wealthy off enslaving workers, gouging customers, polluting at will, and buying off politicians. Now rich people do all those things & manipulate tax codes & subsidy policies and rely on govt kickbacks & contracts.
@Paranoid4ndroid Damn! I'm not within the 1% so 20+ dollars for a DVD is a little out of the budget, and this flick isn't even available on Amazon or eBay. I may look around for a better deal elsewhere a little later on.
Roy Martin: People say to me all the time 'if its all about god then how come I don't have money?' Well to them I say God doesn't give gifts to those that can't handle them.
Fuck, I haven't heard anyone both misinterpret the bible, insult a whole class of people, and have a completely retarded view at the same time. Christians never cease to amaze me.
Is really a good documentary, I'm glad people is sensitive to the world problems and try to expose to the world. The job of JJ was great, maybe he wont change the world, but with this documentary helped a bit! Very brave and very good job!
"You might say I came to the attention of top management at a fairly young age. As my father said, there is nothing wrong with nepotism as long as you keep it within the family."
"TECHNOLOGICAL UNEMPLOYMENT" & "ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE" WILL BLUNTLY SHOW US, THAT OUR CURRENT SOCIETY AND WAY OF DOING THINGS CANNOT GO ON FOREVER...

( PROBABILITY )
( UTILITARIANISM )
THESE 3 FIELDS OF STUDY SHOW US THAT WE ARE A "COLLECTIVE" ORGANISM, AND THAT WE AS A "WHOLE" CANNOT SURVIVE UNTIL EVERY "INDIVIDUAL" IS ALLOWED TO SURVIVE.
the humanitarian in your soul will one day wake up the appropriate candidates of america! don't give up in what you desire than what is expected of you~ all the best today and always, claudia
"It's an interesting game because you can use other people's balls" That's the best description I have heard yet that describes the mess this 1% got this world into.
@ShadowCrashed81 It is often remarked that the American educational system is failing at a general level and your contribution would seem to partially validate this observation. I can only suggest that you return to some sort of school, start reading books, or perhaps even consider learning a foreign language. The world is much larger than you imagine. Good luck.
Very interesting movie, thanks for making it. I don't agree with the higher taxation for the wealthy. I think the government should lower everyone's taxes and be forced to stay within it's budget like every one else. One of the main problems is s government that is out of control and that is for sell to the highest bidder. This crazy corporate welfare has got to stop. We all believe in wealth, but not at the expense of other people's well-being. We are our brother's keepers!
@TRADERSFRIEND - One of the ways we are out 'brother's keeper' is by ensuring the government adequately provides a security net for those not able to find work because the uber-wealthy have shipped all their jobs to our brothers and sisters in countries where the price of labour is much cheaper.
BTW the trickle down theory was disproved a couple of decades ago, unless you're talking about the wealthy actually leaking on those lower in the social hierarchy?
I got my unemployment check today 149 dollars a week 49 for gas to look for work 50 towards phone 30 for sons diaper 20 towards food rents 600 do the math
whats the point of making billions on top of millions... to go to the moon look at the earth and say. Thats a part of my portfolio. WHAT A Selfish ShaMEFUL thing to say DISGRACE to a HUMAN RACE!
Arrrrrhhh!! The 1% are coming! You need to Hide yo wife, hide yo kids, hide yo wife, hide yo kids. And hide your husbands too coz everybody getting raped out here.
hahaha. friedman, bursting the bubble of hippies and those who don't study history, but instead feed themselves with visions of ... oh wait... the top 1 percent are actually evil and purposefully steal money from all of us OPENLY. hundreds of human beings with over a billion in wealth that they never use, while people like me bust my ass for nothing?? where's my pitchfork.
Huraaaayyyyyy someone from the wealthy has the balls to open up and say what needs to be said and teach those of us who's willing to learn how the society we in functions but it's a pity the ones who should pay attention somehow never will but I'm passing this on in every way I can.....well done Jamie and I look forward to more from you and thanks for opening up to us the lesser 99%
wealth was created at expense of health. In the bigger picture where one sees the alignment of nature and cooperative whole systems this capitalist notion looks to be archaic and developmentally retarded. Whole systems reality raises the human potential which if nurtured will enable a vast possibility. That is exciting, a blooming and opening. Capitalism is a lessening a domination, hierarchical set up where according to Goldman in Social Intelligence the sociopathic triad rules.
With a congress that's more than willing to imprison American citizens indefinitely, or even kill them, without trial, charge, or any regard to the constitution, what makes anyone here think that we can change things through anything less than violent means? It's inevitable.
simplistic mr Friedman strikes again. "What if we, as a society, in some way consciously tried to help the very poor to live a better and more productive life?" "No - that would be socialism, which is bad. The poor must live miserable and wasted lives so that the rich can enjoy wealth beyond their wildest dreams. Anything else would doom western society to terminal decline. Educate yourself son, now get the fuck out of my office and let me get on with licking some serious ruling class ass."
@atlasman55 Actually man socialism is when the government tries to take your money because they feel it is their duty to help the poor live a better more productive life. There is nothing wrong with society as a whole banding together to provide through other people. That is called philanthropy. Big difference. In fact if government would just get out of the way and stop robbing half of the working mans salary every year through taxes there would probably be a lot more philanthropy.
"..beyond what's possible." Does seem that things are tied tightly and there's no give but, there's hope that people will value kindness over Capitilism.
The more the years progress the richer that 1% gets!
The more the years progress the harder it is for that one college gradue of a prestige school, who came from the bottom half of society to achieve the american dream
to ahieve that social class movement.
Our country truly is run by those lobbyist by those who have the money becuase money=power...so what a lie of "what the pulblic wants the public gets" ..change is needed!
This film changed my mind about how capable the wealthy are at injecting into the system for their own benefit. Taxes are just involuntary donations. You need a smarter populace? You have to pay for it - by building better schools, and taking good care of teachers. This is cultivation from the bottom. Alternatively, there's cultivation from the top - overpaying individuals to keep them on your team. The former is a more stable approach, but a much longer term investment.
Also someone *please* point out to Friedman followers that the UK socio-economic model model is *nothing like the US one*. We have social support and we have an NHS.
Also unlike major economic downturns in the past which were often caused *by real problems* (e.g. dustbowl, potato famine etc.) nowadays all the real financial disasters are *entirely the responsibility of those with big money and those who deal with big money* and they don't suffer at all when it goes wrong but the rest of us do.
Someone needs to point out that it's quite possible to advance your talent and make huge contributions to advance society as well *without any monetary gain on your part beyond the minimum required for shelter, food, water and the limited amount of stuff you need personally on a day-to-day basis*. Anything beyond that taken for yourself is just greed.
Excellent- this should be a must see by all high school civics students, churches should screen for their congregation, college campuses. Encourage dialogue and OUT the 1% for their greedy desregard. Return to the 90% tax rate on the highest income and tax unearned income (dividends, etc.) the same as wages. WE are the 99% and we will see these changes! Jamie Johnson, you are a fine young man who I would be so proud to call my son!
Friedman - "One thing you can count on is that a person will always put their interest over yours" - This is a childish, selfish attitude and the statement is simply not true. Mature people do not need much to be happy and hence are not greedy. Greed is an infantile instinct which is easily overcome with WISDOM. Friedman's ideology will be defeated and i don't think he will be fondly remembered in the future.
Most front men and women on the news and our nation, including Obama....are related by blood. It's time we wake up. If you don't know what I am talking about, search You Tube, Illuminati blood line. Follow them back to Egypt. Waking up is frickin painful and ripped me apart BUT, I have never felt more alive and sure of what's going on in the world.
We still have time...it's our moment to break the cycle. The Apocalypse of TRUTH is coming.
When Carol Vojtola was alive he warned americans that "Materialism is Self Destrucitve!!". But they ignored it kept worshipped their real holy god 1% Billionaire-Millionaire Saints. And now the truth is coming upon their heads.
I love this movie, really great to see a guy with money cable of looking beyond that. You might wanna do a study visit to northern Europe. Actually the society you are talking about already exist. Take a look and hopefully it will add to your ideas..
trying to assuage his guilt for being a particpant in massive inequality if he was really tring to change the world - he would join the zeitgeist movement rather than saying yeah im rich but i really dont like the rich.
there no reason we cant all play croquet and dowhat we want in life - other than the monetary market system which demands servants for money -which is little more than paid slavery - we are paid slaves and if we gripe -the ship the paid slavery to slaves who wont gripe ot bring in machines to do the work- ".....you are lost if you once forget that the fruits of the earth belong to us all, and the earth itself to nobody" rousseau
@GanjaCafe yes-the answer he elicited from mr johnson is not true - people havent kept up with inflation - the gap between rich and poor is mostly increase in the wealth of the wealthy, but is also in large part due to increase in the number and the poverty of the poor. the declinig number of middle class has only maintained thier standards of living by borrowing more than ever.
Even with heirs as disconnected from the original creators of fortunes , I trust the 1% ( 3,100,000 ) to maximize the return on the country's assets than the 0.00017% ( 535 ) Federal masters who gain their power thru conflict , paperwork , and suppression of commerce .
I fucking hate rich people. It's really simple. Earning a decent living, doing an honest days work, as a carpenter, taxi driver, custodian, etc, the people that actually keep the wheels turning and create wealth, is becoming more and more of an impossibility. Not everyone has to be a gazillionaire, and that's OK. But just because you aren't a gazillionaire, doesn't mean you have to live in poverty. There's a difference between being an average worker and a bum. They both don't mean lazy.
Wow. Those upper-level connections *really* allowed for an impressive succession of interviewees! Certainly worth a watch. Yes, a leaning towards the progressive, but the behavior of those on both sides provides an enthralling display of philosophical friction the likes of which I have not recently viewed. I think. More so in instances of unspoken response to an adverse socio-economic view presented than in open combativeness, of which there is blessed little. Is Johnson Sr. drunk at 1:12:10?

Its' good that this doc doesn't really point fingers. We aren't dealing with villains and scheming bad guys. Just people trying to make the right decisions without looking at the big picture. When that happens the 'good' choices for some become the wrong decisions for others. Raising awareness through documentaries like this is a big step in the right direction so people can come together and solve these issues instead of just pointing fingers.

ericclaptonismygod31 2 weeks ago

@ericclaptonismygod31 because giving money to charities, which often rely far more heavily on their govt funds than their donations, isn't actually as effective as PAYING YOUR TAXES. The states with higher tax rates actually provide better social services than the states that sometimes have the highest charity contributions. And that's because charity contributions aren't a reliable source of funding.

11notintheface 2 weeks ago
@11notintheface doesn't matter how well he presents or used to present his arguments, in the end the ideology he has been advocating has proved itself to be self-destructing.
focista6 2 weeks ago
@focista6 Quite the opposite. I agree that the rich are afforded far too much protection. But the problem is not capitalism. The problem is government covering for them via subsidies, tax loopholes, bailouts (sounds like cliche rhetoric but you can't argue it's true), and other methods. If the market were simply allowed to work, the rich wouldn't have that kind of advantage. Not that I'm going to change anyone's mind in this thread or anything...
11notintheface 2 weeks ago 2
@11notintheface unfortunately the problem IS the system. profit is primary to the environment and even human health. on top of that, the majority of the population is forced to waste their lives working for the minority who possess all the wealth and in most cases acquired it through some kind of 'corruption'. since money is needed for life's necessities, and some people are simply unable to make enough, an array of social problems arise which we see today.
focista6 2 weeks ago

The new supply side system we have now is neo-feudalism.
priorzola 19 hours ago

Persuit of money is a trap!

TRADERSFRIEND 2 months ago
@TRADERSFRIEND - One of the ways we are out 'brother's keeper' is by ensuring the government adequately provides a security net for those not able to find work because the uber-wealthy have shipped all their jobs to our brothers and sisters in countries where the price of labour is much cheaper.
BTW the trickle down theory was disproved a couple of decades ago, unless you're talking about the wealthy actually leaking on those lower in the social hierarchy?

wealth was created at expense of health. simplistic mr Friedman strikes again. Educate yourself son, now get the fuck out of my office and let me get on with licking some serious ruling class ass."
atlasman55 2 months ago
@atlasman55 Actually man socialism is when the government tries to take your money because they feel it is their duty to help the poor live a better more productive life. There is nothing wrong with society as a whole banding together to provide through other people. That is called philanthropy. Big difference. In fact if government would just get out of the way and stop robbing half of the working mans salary every year through taxes there would probably be a lot more philanthropy.

MakinMagicFractals 3 months ago
Someone needs to point out that it's quite possible to advance your talent and make huge contributions to advance society as well *without any monetary gain on your part beyond the minimum required for shelter, food, water and the limited amount of stuff you need personally on a day-to-day basis*. Anything beyond that taken for yourself is just greed.

I want to add that this achieves an outstanding level of objectivity. Great job!

This is an awesome documentary. I think that it truly offers a *unique* look at the people many think of when they hear a reference to the 1%.
