Tabs on top is an alright idea, but the implementation that both Firefox and chrome use in full screen are counter-intuitive to windows 7. The drag and drop features added in windows 7 allow users to quickly maximize, shrink, and compare windows through the use of the edges of the screen and the usually ever present title bar. Filling the title bar with tabs makes these features of windows unusable, and also makes it impossible to use the Superbar if it is auto-hidden at the top of the screen.
It seems to me that web designers live in their own little bubble, only interacting amongst themselves, completely blind to the rest of the world. They speak and think almost entirely in buzzwords and office jargon.
"Because it's teh future" is not a valid reason to change things.
It's this kind of crap that inspired "Web 2.0" and the idiotic popular downgrade from 16:10 to 16:9.
@Kerberoz01 thats like complaining and saying physicists speak in jargon. Of course web designers use their own language, this argument makes no sense. Their reasoning behind UI design is based on decades of user testing, physiology of the eye, and cognitive studies dealing with the visual grouping of information and information digestion. the biggest roadblock in design is everyone thinking they know what design is. adopting these changes will most likely make interfaces easier to use.
Good grief what is this bloke on about????? Not everyone is a computer wiz, I don't like the new layout at all. I now have a huge space at the top. Lost my tool bar, am 63 and fed up. How do I get old firefox back - someone, anyone????
Tabs on top are just too far away. I manage many tabs at one time and am changing between them constantly. Also the newest update changed the background where the tabs and bookmarks are so now they blend... Before they were little easier to tell apart.
Browsers are made for the web and for all people not trendy developers that like to keep up with whatever Chrome is doing, what a blunder. Why build something just to slow down the browsing experience, absolutely counter-intuitive.
Saying it's a copy of opera isn't totally correct. You were referring to tabs. "Tabs" were firstly created by Opera (many) years ago.
Even worse was google's chrome team (or whoever) that copied them tabs from Opera and said it was them who brought that feature with their browser. Shame on them!
Tabs on top suck, and are very inconvenient when you're scrolling through a page. Tabs should be on the bottom, just above the status bar... [which, of course, no longer exists in FF4] Since your mouse is almost always down at the bottom when scrolling, having the tabs down there makes far more sense than way up top, no matter how much the clueless guy in the video blathers on.
@ogrejd Why would your mouse be near the bottom to scroll? If you can't afford a mouse with a scroll wheel (seriously, they're like $12 at walmart) then that's not Mozilla's fault.
Oh my god I hope they will preserve the option that allows you to move the tabs down in all the future versions.
The presentation doesn't show it but if you also add the bookmark toolbar between your page and and the tabs toolbar, its beginning to be very far, and it's not only far from your mouse's reach, but also for the eyes, wich is the most disturbing.
Thank god they're changable. I would be SOOOO pissed if they went the same way as youtube and didn't give a shit about the community and just changed shit without a way 2 change back
Why on Earth did they ask this 'speed talker' to the video, who was in the meeting when they said "he's our guy" - this has both baffled and infuriated me.
Im getting so amazingly mad at tabs.. ive spent an hour and a half now trying to make it so a new tab opens blank or itleast google..
but i can ONLY open yahoo. which i DO NOT want to use as my search engine. I have gone to the options and there's no options at what new tabs open as. Ive downloaded add ons to open tabs in home page, and that didnt work, a google page, and that made it so i cant have new tabs, and a blank page, which also did nothing. I hate how we are forced to figure this alout
I tried Chrome once. Didn't like it, went back to FF. Now FF is copying Chrome. I sure hope someone comes out with a good browser before we have to downgrade to FF4 to use FF at all. App Tabs? Group Tabs? WTF good are they?
I agree with this tbh. There's a reason I use FF instead of Chrome, so I really don't like it when FF turns into Chrome. I'm staying with 3.6 until it's not supported anymore.
@SandLizard I use app tabs simply cause i *always* open facebook and youtube, and i dont like that in previous ff, it took a few centimeters per tab, now its only 1cm... group tabs are good for when im doing research for an assignment... all the info about topic a is grouped together, while topic b is grouped together. hence, not ALL the tabs are shown in the one line, thereby decreasing clutter.........
uncheck tabs on top, then go to customize, and drag everything into the tabs bar, then uncheck navigation toolbar, now you have every thing in one place and more room for web site's, good for netbooks with small screens.
Sorry, but this is a BAD presentation. I am a personal trainer and what I see ist a bad voice spoken too fast. people do NOT know people's everyday job. (I have studied computer science!)
By the changes on Seamonkey 2.1 beta 3 now, my arm has serious problems because of the changes on the context menu & the addtional clicks. Firefox killed alreday effecient 1-hand-work by obliging t control key to context-menus so i used Seamonkey. But now Seamonkey seems to be invaded by this sort of developer.
I am not watching this is Firefox. A Firefox window is open as I am typing this in Chrome, and I have other browsers installed, too. The problem is that Firefox is going for some record: it has been crashing a great number of times on a daily basis. I do not know what has gone wrong, but this has never happened before and it does not happen with any other browser I have (ever) used.
Tabs on top or not, the application needs huge revision.
@oYoYebutu That is probably a "personal" problem. By that I mean it is only happening to you and you shouldn't hate Firefox for that. My Firefox has never crashed since I downloaded FF4. It also made FF faster on my computer.
@TheCrazyCoasterKid If four browsers work fine on a machine and a fifth browser does not, it is a sign that the fifth browser needs a thorough revision.
It is just an imperfect programme which has caused a lot of discomfort. (Ergo, no hate involved.) Hope the smart guys behind it are working on it as we speak (well, write...) to make it reliable again.
~~~~~> This is an EXCELLENT, very informative video. Nice job explaining all the specifics on the reasons behind the change. Thumbs up for making a point that it is still customizable either way!
Firefox 4 only looks cool but efficiency is crap now because the tabs, even though you can move them to the bottom, you can't double click in a random area where the tabs bar is to open new tabs like in the previous versions. Also, you only get one tab button which is a pain in the ass. Add back this feature because that space is useless now; It minimizes firefox when double clicked like you do on the title bar which makes no sense!!!!
When i installed firefox i noticed that the "home" button was changed and was added right in the god damn right corner WTF? oh and as most people said the tabs are crap hell I liked the status bar instead of ripping off chrome you could have just fixed some bugs AND SPEED IMPROVEMENTS WAIT ABOUT THE SPEED IT GOT SLOWER THAN 3.6.
I've noticed quite a lot of complaining about FF4 here and on other sites. So if you're one of these people who complain about the layout, or positioning of buttons etc. just customise it back and re position of them. Most things in FF4 aren't permanent, or being forced, you can just change it back.
I hate both positions. I use VertTabBar to set the tabbar to the LEFT of the screen. So many people have large widescreen lcds now that, imo, the left is the best position, you can see what a tab has loaded easily even when you have lots of tabs open.
With the widescreen lcds, the left and right side is wasted at the moment with empty space (even on youtube), moving the tabbar to the left has been the best thing i've done on the browser and i've used Firefox since it was Phoenix 0.4.
Yes. And using Hide Tabbar will get the screen space back either way. I use both. I downloaded FF4 and saw that it is nothing more than a Chrome copy and then uninstalled it and went back to the latest 3.6 version. If I wanted Chrome I would be using Chrome!
By un-setting the "Tabs on Top" option the legacy buttons & tab layout is restored. As usual, users will have to wait for their favorite plugins to get updated.
I initially had a bad reaction to the tabs on top model, but after watching the video I'll give it a try before I say that I hate it. It's clear based on the video that there was significant internal debate at Mozilla about the change, and yes, "they" made the decision, but I think they did so based on extensive testing with their users.
I think this change is one that will meet significant opposition because users are so used to the tabs on bottom layout, but tabs on top does sound like it wi
I hate the tabs on top just like I hate the smaller back/home/stop buttons. Also don't like that there's not a divider now between my Bookmarks Toolbar and tabs. The hole layout looks cheep and generic
As same as most of people, I uninstall FF4 because of the "Tab on the top" change. It's what they want to and it's not what "we" want to... Very similar to Microsoft concept. I'm very sad that FF become big and become like them......"Ok, this is what we think the best, I don't care what you think or what you want to, obey me."
Tabs is a Mickey-Mouse problem. How about the fact that FF 4 refuses to load Google maps or McAfee site advisor? I decided to fall back to FF3, but that has also stopped loading Google maps. What now? Use MS Internet Exploder again???
@unreal1298 Why on earth should I change my browser? I have paid-for plugins that I use for video conversion, McAfee site advisor and a host of other add-ons that made FF3 a pleaseure to use.
@TheSkydow I agree, it's not a drawback. Practically, it's definitely not a drawback. but I can imagine it is psychological for some. It may feel like a bad thing, just the look of it. But I don't know. I'm glad they decided to put tabs on top.
The mouse distance downside to tabs-on-top can be negated when using keyboard hotkey shortcuts. You can traverse forward and backward between/among tabs with Ctrl+Tab and Ctrl+SHIFT+Tab, so you can go ahead and leave your mouse in the web page content area. Keyboard hotkey shortcuts are, in my opinion, faster, and your keyboard keys are more durable than your mouse buttons which wear-out faster from clicking usage (overusage).
Tabs weren't broken. Why fix them? Well marketing... On top of all the guy (who besides being handsome looks like he hasn't seen a shaver or a shower in quite a while) has been given a script that he must read in under 7 min. To me tab positioning is: the more often I use a button ... the closer to the main working area I want it. Bad move !!
@Vajsmilan becouse that would make it hard to move window, thinking doesnt hurt, When window is maximized (cant be moved) tabs are next to that button
When i first used google chrome i was blown away with tabs on top,it looked so natural and simple! if you like tabs old way stfu and use it that way,you have option to do what ever you want in Firefox!
Tabs on top is not a very convenient place. I moved them down, however thie 4.0 is a little disappointing. It doesn't help that it's almost impossible to understand the speaker.
I think it's very convenient. And the Tab grouping is really helpfully for me, because I have so many tabs open most of the time. I was actually pretty impressed when I first used it.
Perhaps you could reveal to us exactly what features you were hoping to see in Firefox 4? Personally, I kinda wish the recently closed tabs were in a more accesable place, and it would be nice to have the Chrome "Most visited webpages" page. But those aren't THAT important to me.
@zej6262 Really? I think FF4 is amazing. If you keep the tabs on top for a few days you get used to it really fast. I tried to move then down once and couldn't get used to them down. I was like "Did I really like them down her once?" Try to get used to FF4. But hey, that's your opinion.
Completely opinionated statement which I disagree with. Tabs on top is not a problem, and if you can speak English and have an IQ above 70, then you can clearly understand the speaker.
Now that's all great, but if I click to something on the top side of the webpage and accidentally move mouse a little bit more higher, it's less damage to switch to a different tab (having tab names just above the webpage) then to discard my current page and all the changes I may have written into forms by accidentally clicking on a bookmark (having tab names on top).
If that's really so that address bar was part of tab window (the green), would it be slow to use the address bar if the tab was lagging? I guess not, but that's what I immediately thought and almost vomited because of that. The biggest problem in many programs is that the whole program gets lag when only part of it gets lag.
after some fiddling around i managed to get firefox 4 look and feel almost similar to 3.0, just the problem left with opening new tab but i could live with it.
how i like it: tabs at the buttom, bookmarks button to the left of the bookmark toolbar, home icon back to the left of the address bar next to the nav where it shoulda been in the first place.
putting tabs on top wont get much chrome or ie users to switch to FF, as much as irritating people who have used FF for years.
also some tab controls were reworked, im a tab happy mouse user, i like that i could right click anywhere on the tab bar and i could open a new tab, now i have to target the [+] tab button just to open a new one.. sure there are keyboard shortcuts but why the hell take this very good feature out.
tabs on firefox should default to bottom for consideration to long time users.
its confusing when people using FF are used to tabs on the bottom.
also for people who browse multiple pages one after another checking it means less mouse travel not having to go above the address bar. personally i rarely use the back/forward button, i do click tabs more often and do not wish to adapt to a new way when it was fine the way it was for my use. if i wanted tabs on top i would use chrome or ie.
What is the theme in this video? I downloaded firefox 4.0 but it doesn't have the top left hand firefox button or the home button near the tabs. Closest thing i found was Strata Reloaded.
@KrimCard There is no theme being used, it's all mockups. He says everything in the video is a mockup. In order to get the orange Firefox button you need to select view/toolbars/menu bar. Doing so will cause the menu bar to be hidden and the orange Firefox button to appear. If you want the home button next to the tabs, select view/toolbars/customize and drag and drop the home button next to the tabs.
HTML 5 and the improved Sunspider/Acid3 scores are fine. By royally fucking up the user interface all you're doing is just forcing people to screw around trying to get everything back to the way they had been using it for years, not to mention changing it for all their friends, family and whoever else is wondering what happened to their Forecast fox add-on bar.
I use a couple toolbars on my firefox, so mouse distance was definitely a big factor - bottom line though, I'm glad they gave us the choice for either/or. Thanks devs!
If you guys want to get a message please speak a little slower a clearer.
BTW. i deinstalled FF4.0 again and using FF-> V3.6.15. again
I hate upper Taps, i red somewhere that the "old" style is adjustable with a rightclick on the Taps but there are more things i have to adjust.
Why is the "Home" Button totally on right side where is the "Reload" button where is the "Stop"-Button. I don't wanna adjust FF after installing 30min. to use it.
@1181timothy just upgrade to windows 7 dude its just like XP but up to date,i had xp a month ago when my comp crashed i always used xp but my bro had win 7disk so i was like "what the hell ,ill try it" and i been happy with it ever since
1. Don't waste your time on things like "increased mouse distance to click if tabs on top" etc. You are the engineer spending time to research & think about everything, so just do the best thing in your opinion... like Opera does. They always innovate & others follow.
2. You should have done these changes a long time ago... Firefox GUI is currently the most outdated of all... how did it get to this? So, stop wasting time on getting consensus & just do the right thing.
Ummmmmm... when I maximize the window and move the mouse all the way up to the "screen edge" it doesn't select the tab like the guy said it would. I have to move the mouse down slightly to select the tab. That kills it for me!
cool video, good argumentation. tabs shouldn't be switched by clicking at them, but rather with mouse gestures, keyboards shortcuts or a visual tab shortcut which pops up in the middle of the screen, anyway :)
FUCK FF4 and newer. FF 3.6 FTW
I initially had a bad reaction to the tabs on top model, but after watching the video I'll give it a try before I say that I hate it. It's clear based on the video that there was significant internal debate at Mozilla about the change, and yes, "they" made the decision, but I think they did so based on extensive testing with their users.
I think this change is one that will meet significant opposition because users are so used to the tabs on bottom layout, but tabs on top does sound like it wi
cyber553 11 months ago
I hate the tabs on top just like I hate the smaller back/home/stop buttons. Also don't like that there's not a divider now between my Bookmarks Toolbar and tabs. The hole layout looks cheep and generic
In day when we wont have possibility to have tabs on bottom, I'll stop using firefox.
gelvispro 11 months ago
As same as most of people, I uninstall FF4 because of the "Tab on the top" change. It's what they want to and it's not what "we" want to... Very similar to Microsoft concept. I'm very sad that FF become big and become like them......"Ok, this is what we think the best, I don't care what you think or what you want to, obey me."
MidiMiku2 11 months ago 2
@MidiMiku2 You didn't have to uninstall FF4. You can just change the tab position in the options...
sKullkidi 11 months ago
Tabs is a Mickey-Mouse problem. How about the fact that FF 4 refuses to load Google maps or McAfee site advisor? I decided to fall back to FF3, but that has also stopped loading Google maps. What now? Use MS Internet Exploder again???
jaegerbh 11 months ago
@jaegerbh Stop complaining and use different websites.
PS McAfee sucks.
@unreal1298 Thanks for the totally useless comment.
@jaegerbh Okay sorry. Try using Google Chrome? It's just as fast as Firefox. Google maps should work on it. And tabs obviously don't matter to you.
unreal1298 11 months ago
@unreal1298 Why on earth should I change my browser? I have paid-for plugins that I use for video conversion, McAfee site advisor and a host of other add-ons that made FF3 a pleaseure to use.
Athos523 11 months ago
I don't uderstand why they even mention distance of tabs, IT'S NOT A DRAWBACK, moving cursor from top to bottom is a matter of milisec
TheSkydow 11 months ago
@TheSkydow I agree, it's not a drawback. Practically, it's definitely not a drawback. but I can imagine it is psychological for some. It may feel like a bad thing, just the look of it. But I don't know. I'm glad they decided to put tabs on top.
yoinkz 11 months ago
The mouse distance downside to tabs-on-top can be negated when using keyboard hotkey shortcuts. You can traverse forward and backward between/among tabs with Ctrl+Tab and Ctrl+SHIFT+Tab, so you can go ahead and leave your mouse in the web page content area. Keyboard hotkey shortcuts are, in my opinion, faster, and your keyboard keys are more durable than your mouse buttons which wear-out faster from clicking usage (overusage).
Tabs weren't broken. Why fix them? Well marketing... On top of all the guy (who besides being handsome looks like he hasn't seen a shaver or a shower in quite a while) has been given a script that he must read in under 7 min. To me tab positioning is: the more often I use a button ... the closer to the main working area I want it. Bad move !!
SPEAK SLOWER!
Tabs on top is not a very convenient place. I moved them down, however thie 4.0 is a little disappointing. It doesn't help that it's almost impossible to understand the speaker.
zej6262 11 months ago 21
@zej6262
I think it's very convenient. And the Tab grouping is really helpfully for me, because I have so many tabs open most of the time. I was actually pretty impressed when I first used it.
Perhaps you could reveal to us exactly what features you were hoping to see in Firefox 4? Personally, I kinda wish the recently closed tabs were in a more accesable place, and it would be nice to have the Chrome "Most visited webpages" page. But those aren't THAT important to me.
Is English your second language?
This video seems to address any concerns you could have about tabs ontop. It's very well done, and I found his speaking pace just about perfect.
helmutlord 10 months ago
@zej6262 Really? I think FF4 is amazing. If you keep the tabs on top for a few days you get used to it really fast. I tried to move then down once and couldn't get used to them down. I was like "Did I really like them down her once?" Try to get used to FF4. But hey, that's your opinion.
TheCrazyCoasterKid 10 months ago
@zej6262
Completely opinionated statement which I disagree with. Tabs on top is not a problem, and if you can speak English and have an IQ above 70, then you can clearly understand the speaker.
Now that's all great, but if I click to something on the top side of the webpage and accidentally move mouse a little bit more higher, it's less damage to switch to a different tab (having tab names just above the webpage) then to discard my current page and all the changes I may have written into forms by accidentally clicking on a bookmark (having tab names on top).
slier81 11 months ago
If that's really so that address bar was part of tab window (the green), would it be slow to use the address bar if the tab was lagging? I guess not, but that's what I immediately thought and almost vomited because of that. The biggest problem in many programs is that the whole program gets lag when only part of it gets lag.
Firefox 4 sucks big time and I've just downgraded it back to Firefox 3!
TheFreeForever 11 months ago 2
after some fiddling around i managed to get firefox 4 look and feel almost similar to 3.0, just the problem left with opening new tab but i could live with it.
how i like it: tabs at the buttom, bookmarks button to the left of the bookmark toolbar, home icon back to the left of the address bar next to the nav where it shoulda been in the first place.
putting tabs on top wont get much chrome or ie users to switch to FF, as much as irritating people who have used FF for years.
also some tab controls were reworked, im a tab happy mouse user, i like that i could right click anywhere on the tab bar and i could open a new tab, now i have to target the [+] tab button just to open a new one.. sure there are keyboard shortcuts but why the hell take this very good feature out.
bktabz 11 months ago
tabs on firefox should default to bottom for consideration to long time users.
its confusing when people using FF are used to tabs on the bottom.
also for people who browse multiple pages one after another checking it means less mouse travel not having to go above the address bar. personally i rarely use the back/forward button, i do click tabs more often and do not wish to adapt to a new way when it was fine the way it was for my use. if i wanted tabs on top i would use chrome or ie.
bktabz 11 months ago
What is the theme in this video? I downloaded firefox 4.0 but it doesn't have the top left hand firefox button or the home button near the tabs. Closest thing i found was Strata Reloaded.
KrimCard 11 months ago
@KrimCard There is no theme being used, it's all mockups. He says everything in the video is a mockup. In order to get the orange Firefox button you need to select view/toolbars/menu bar. Doing so will cause the menu bar to be hidden and the orange Firefox button to appear. If you want the home button next to the tabs, select view/toolbars/customize and drag and drop the home button next to the tabs.
HTML 5 and the improved Sunspider/Acid3 scores are fine. By royally fucking up the user interface all you're doing is just forcing people to screw around trying to get everything back to the way they had been using it for years, not to mention changing it for all their friends, family and whoever else is wondering what happened to their Forecast fox add-on bar.
Haha! typical self-righteous designers with their 'conceptual' creations!
I'm SO excited about pop-up notifications, 3rd party toolbars and 'app' tabs that I'm willing to sacrifice mouse distance and efficiency!
-_-
Good design is invisible; function before form.
Never forget that.
Props for making it a changeable preference though :p
BTW. i deinstalled FF4.0 again and using FF-> V3.6.15. again
I hate upper Taps, i red somewhere that the "old" style is adjustable with a rightclick on the Taps but there are more things i have to adjust.
Why is the "Home" Button totally on right side where is the "Reload" button where is the "Stop"-Button. I don't wanna adjust FF after installing 30min. to use it.
Alex,
1. Don't waste your time on things like "increased mouse distance to click if tabs on top" etc. You are the engineer spending time to research & think about everything, so just do the best thing in your opinion... like Opera does. They always innovate & others follow.
2. You should have done these changes a long time ago... Firefox GUI is currently the most outdated of all... how did it get to this? So, stop wasting time on getting consensus & just do the right thing.
