Great clip, thanks for posting. There's been a few Aussie 70s punk clips popping up on YT lately which is good to see. I used to watch bands at the Grand Hotel & other venues in the late 70s. Don't recall ever seeing the Scabs however. I remember they would always get a mention in the tabloid papers whenever there was a story about punk.
It's surprising you never saw Johnny Dole & The Scabs at the Grand considering they were the band that played there the most and booked the other bands that played there. Perhaps you went there after the band split? Glad you liked the clip.
Perhaps I didn't start going there until 1979? I think I was a late comer. As I recall it was $1 to get into the back room where the bands played. There was one guy who ran that, forget his name but he put out a roneod fanzine called 'Suck Shit' which I used to have a copy of.
Yeah The Scabs stopped playing there by early 1979 and as far as I know never played there again. I was booking the bands for a while but when I got "asked to leave" the band I never went back so I have no knowledge of bands after that. Don't remember that Fanzine either, do you still have it?
I know I still had it in 96 because I have a scan I made of the front cover then. I never threw it out so I'm hoping to turn it up one day, probably by accident. There wasn't much to it, only 4 or 6 pages. I recall it was titled 'Suck Shit. The first & probably the last' It was printed on one of those roneo machines they used to have in schools that gave a blue/purple ink colour. They were prone to fading & I'm worried that by the time I find it it will just be paper with some faint blue marks.
Did Johnny Dole live in Hurstville? Around 1979 I was visiting my cousins there & we were walking down the street at night & my cousin pointed to some guy & said "That's Johnny Dole, he lives around here." I always wondered if that was true or he was just making it up.
When I joined the band he was living at Marrickville and then went to live with Peter (the guitarist) at Woolloomooloo. He had a girlfriend that lived in the Sutherland Shire (she and I went to the same school) and she may have moved to the Hurstville area so it's possible it was him. Peter also had family that lived in the St George area so he may have been visiting? All very domestic isn't it, doesn't sound very Punk does it?
Absolute classic Australian Punk. How can we force all the young kids to listen to bands like this to get them appreciate the true essence of Punk Rock, and not the pre-packaged safe product so much of it has become today ?
Saw these guys at Sydney Uni Refectory supporting The Saints in May 77, a night that blew my mind.Ivor Hay was on the door.Amazing flashback of a clip, great work for digging it up.
Johhny Dole and the Scabs gets a mention today in the Sydney Morning Herald 21-06-08 on page 14. It talks about them being featured at The Oxford Funhouse at Darlinghurst. I think I can remember watching them at The Grand Hotel on Broadway. I do remember watching The Kelpies, Urban Guerillas and Kaos at the Grand.
Thanks for your comments, it's always nice to hear from the disabled. Being Dyslexic, it must be so difficult to communicate with people, but I understood what you meant.
Jesus Christ, I bet you look older than my grandfather, and he has been dead for 15 years...hahahahaha....it's ok, I am getting up there in age, too. I fucking hate getting old..
You are still a kid. I am at heart. I went to a gig last night...the funny thing is, that the uniforms never change over the years, just the people. Thanks for the awesome vid...I enjoyed it thoroughly.
Hi Chris, thanks for your comments, I loved that speaker box, if you go to the web site there are pictures of it with and without the Scabs written on it. Enjoy.
wish i could hear it better
