love the shot of freddie green chording over basie's shoulder. don't forget that webster was with ellington during the early 40s. rushing is one of my favorites. if you haven't heard him with basie in the 30s - 'exactly like you', 'boogie woogie', 'georgianna', 'sent for you yesterday' - you haven't lived.
Actually, Count's band sounds strongly Dukish here, due to the Ellington-influenced arrangement by Andy Gibson, who also wrote that piece. Immortal recording, endlessly enjoyable.
Count Basie All Stars: Jimmy Rushing vocal ,Emmett Berry, Doc Cheatham, Joe Newman, Joe Wilder (tp); Roy Eldridge (tp, flhn); Vic Dickinson, Benny Morton, Dicky Wells (tb); Earl Warren (as); Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster (ts); Gerry Mulligan (bs); Count Basie (p); Freddie Green (g); Eddie Jones (b); Jo Jones (d)
Cheers to real music! Someone should show this to some of these new aged "talkers" and "noise makers" who think what they're doing is music. I wish kids and teenagers would move on from what the public media feeds them.
i really would like to drink beers,or whiskey with this guy.. or Big Joe Turner, or both..all damn night long, and play so much good blues and jazzy blues..
yes of course that's Count's band.. It is Ben . but he did play with Basie years Before that. Also are Dickie Wells, Benny Morton and Vic Dickenson tb.Doc Cheat/m Tpt I think Al Aarons Tpt as well.I just wish the full video could be offered.I think some folks should do a little more research before they post info. Thanks for the great "Jazzzzz"!

Love this-it's from a CBS TV show called "The Sound of Jazz"-you can get the whole thing on video-well worth it. By the way, this is the Count's orchestra not Dukes. Thats the Count himself playing piano...
The great Jimmy Rushing, "Mr. Five by Five". This was a special all-star Basie band with Ben Webster, Coleman Hawkins, Gerry Mulligan, Earl Warren, Roy Eldridge, Joe Newman, Papa Jo Jones and several other legendary players. Disappointing not to hear the entire tune.
