I'm 60 years old and can remember Sat night snuggled on the couch with my dad eating popcorn watching Gunmoke.. Could not pronounce my s back then. Had to have my jammies on before it came on...
@netmeistr329 we still watch gunsmoke daily its just about all we watch my kids 6,7 and 8 also watch it its our show has been for years on our 2nd set of cds wore the first set out
Many of the Western stars of that era were stand up guys. Hugh O'Brian, who played Wyatt Earp, is another that comes to mind that is a real gentleman, I've read.
Gunsmoke was one of the first "adult" westerns to appear on tv. It was rated the #1 show for 4 years (1957-1960). Another adult western appeared the same week that Gunsmoke debuted: The Life And Legend Of Wyatt Earp, starring Hugh O'Brian.
Gunsmoke was originally a radio program that debuted in 1952. William Conrad provided the voice of Matt Dillon in the radio show.
Both Gunsmoke and Wyatt Earp began the adult western phase of tv that ran from the mid/late 50's thru the 1960's.
Howard McNear, Floyd the Barber, was Doc Addams and Parley Baer (Mayer Stoner and Ernie the Keebler Elf) was Chester Proudfoot (not "Goode" like on TV's Gunsmoke.) They were two wonderful radio actors and, according to William Conrad, two of the nicest guys ever.
You can listen to radio's Gunsmoke every Sunday night on WAMU's The Big Broadcast along with Johnny Dollar and many other vintage shows. Or, just got to TBB website and listen on your time from the archived shows.

I love where he jokes about having to cut the interview off by 12:00 so he can watch the show. Great sense of humor!

The old school had a way of talking about people even when the person was rude that you complimented them. James is pure class!
