Need 4 paws to walk so the mouth is the only thing left, Can sometimes take them a little while to get the right grip if the baby is figity (as in this case) but they instinctively know when they have "bitten" the right bit - it doesn't hurt the kitten at all.

Cat mothers pick up their babies by the scruff of the neck so they cannot hurt them. This is the way mother cats have handled their babies for millions of years. The babies may look like they're being hurt, but they are not. They just don't like to be disciplined by their mothers.

@Nokande - It IS an instinctive reaction. Cats are very good mothers and they know what they're doing. I've seen a lot of mother cats do this with their kittens repeatedly. It's being a good mother. The kittens are mad because they're being disciplined, but the mother knows what she has to do. The scruff of the neck is constructed by nature for exactly this purpose. Cat people should relax. Besides, I would think that they would know these things about mother cat behavior.

Cats are good mothers, and they are well aware of what they are doing. Kittens are babies, and they're a handful to care for. I adopted my abandoned kitten, though when he did something bad I could pick him up by the scruff, look straight into his eyes, and in a deep enough tone say, "Bad kitty!" He learned quickly and I didn't have to discipline him too often after that.
