The biggest problem with these ads is that by legal definition, downloading copyrighted movies/music/whatever is *NOT* stealing. It's copyright infringement, which is a different kettle of fish altogether.

Any lawyer will tell you that "downloading pirated films is stealing" is complete bullshit. There is no way one can go to prison for "stealing" having done that (though one can, unfortunately, go to prison for copyright infringement). Unless somebody is actually caught selling copyrighted material, or uploading mass quantities of it and making a profit, it's generally only considered a civil matter. Allegedly the composer was only paid for a one off show at a local film festival, but then found out some time later it was on millions of DVD's. Its reckoned he's owed at least a million euros but even a representative of the body that was supposed to act in his best interests, tried to rip him off by asking for a third of the money they would recover. Its called greed I think.

Stealing a physical object is inconvenient because someone ELSE might have bought that item, but now they cannot because it is physically NOT THERE to be bought. Digital info is in the ether. A single book file can be turned into a million copies of itself in an instant. As long as you don't claim to have made it yourself, I don't really see the issue.
