  • Some philosophies are created as traps so that the "individual" will suffer and then come to know himself better through that suffering and become a real individual...leading to truth by inversion...Im thinking of Nietzsche and kirkegaard.

  • Good ol'Epicurus.... Excellent quote, spot on! :D

Meh we all know Gary's great epistemolgy and analytical skills so we can anticipate his response with confidence:

"Oh, don't give me your stupid idealist nerdy naive worldview dumbass so eat your eyeglasses you fat fucktard!"

    (give or take one name-calling).

  • Great quote. Thanks.

  • True, but I think some "negative" philosophies have the power to ease suffering by vindicating the reader's unpleasant perceptions of life and offering them the solace of shared experience. The same holds true of dour music and art.

Everything in moderation though I suppose.

  • @ral1334 Absolutely. Although Schopenhauer offers a lot of consolation and has great advice for living, so I cannot treat his philosophy as negative. But I regard pessimistic antiphilosophy (Cioran) as its own thing, with complete different aims. I esteem both in their own way.

  • Very apt. Thank you.:)
