This is stunning! I adore the languid pace - I would never label it "slow." Although it is sung in German, the sound of his voice is ideal for this French repertoire. He can certainly stand up the to the greats. He is extremely skilled in his technique, going from one register to the next, not seamlessly, but purposefully negotiating the passaggios beautifully.
JULIUS PATZAK: Un artista formidable!!! No solamente cantando canciones vienesas, como lo demuestra esta excelente grabación. GRACIAS. Saludos desde Buenos Aires.
Extraordinary interpretation of this wondrful tenor, thanks for sharing!!!We all have the luck to learn from all the singers of the past...all them inmortalized in their recordings. imagine how tough it was for those who did not even had the refferences of recordings...simply AMAZING!!!!!
Thank you, aaronsande. Julius Patzak was famous, racheleleeba, in the 1920s-1940s, but he never sang in this country. He was an outstanding singer of Mozart; he also recorded Verdi, Tchaikovsky, Thomas, Offenbach, and Smetana.
@aaronsande Thank you for your comment. Another tenor from the same period who also never sang in this country was the Danish operatic tenor Helge Rosvaenge. He had a voice of "unusual splendor"; he sang in Toscanini's 1937 Salzburg production of Mozart's Magic Flute, and in his 1938 London production of Verdi's Requiem. Both can be found on semi-pirated recordings somewhere, but I doubt Amazon.Good luck!
aaronsande-Candy is Candace AKA Kievest on you tube. A delightful lady, and I hope friend-who sent me this lovely recording. His Lensky's aria is also great.Thank you for this great posting-D.
You've hit the jackpot. This is a gem. It is a quite distinct voice but with certain similarities in phrasing and tone to Björling - and every bit as appealing. You are right to place the quality of this rendition in the same league as Wunderlich - and I would add Gigli.
Yes. Gigli certainly belongs right in there! Thanks for the great comment, Barry, and I'm happy you liked it! There are 3 more I posted, hope you hear them! =D
I've long admired Patzak for the sheer beauty of his tone--as Doug states, similar to Bjorling's--as well as his innate musicality. Thanks for sharing, Aaron.
Patzak had a long career, singing opera, oratorio and lieder. According to everything I've read, he was entirely self-taught as a singer. Although his voice was essentially lyric, he won great acclaim for his Florestan as well. That diminuendo at 2:18 is masterly:) --
He was much loved and admired in Vienna and I heard many memorable performances with him,

Style is not french, much too slow!! But the voice is a real beauty and the emotion right
monpitt500 1 year ago
@monpitt500 Glad you enjoyed it despite the tempo. This is close to the tempo used by most tenors I have heard, so I find your comment curious! =D

@runupahill1 You are most welcome! It has been my pleasure to discover Patzak!
I have two more CDs coming of JUST Patzak, probably with what you mention above but I can't remember...if Amazon will stop delaying!
"In stock" to me means they will ship it when I order it. 2 Months later shows they disagree with me on that. =/
