  • He was much loved and admired in Vienna and I heard many memorable performances with him,

  • This is stunning! I adore the languid pace - I would never label it "slow." Although it is sung in German, the sound of his voice is ideal for this French repertoire. He can certainly stand up the to the greats. He is extremely skilled in his technique, going from one register to the next, not seamlessly, but purposefully negotiating the passaggios beautifully.

  • @cantorandopera Great comments, all. Thank you, and I'm so glad you enjoyed him!

  • He was unknown to me until now. Such a beautiful sweet tenor voice. I will add him to my list.

    Thanks for sharing.

  • @neelsdp1 Glad you like him! =D

  • JULIUS PATZAK: Un artista formidable!!! No solamente cantando canciones vienesas, como lo demuestra esta excelente grabación. GRACIAS. Saludos desde Buenos Aires.

  • @fabianpersic Great comment, thank you!

  • Extraordinary interpretation of this wondrful tenor, thanks for sharing!!!We all have the luck to learn from all the singers of the past...all them inmortalized in their recordings. imagine how tough it was for those who did not even had the refferences of recordings...simply AMAZING!!!!!

  • Style is not french, much too slow!! But the voice is a real beauty and the emotion right

  • @monpitt500 Glad you enjoyed it despite the tempo. This is close to the tempo used by most tenors I have heard, so I find your comment curious! =D

  • That was totally transcendent. My thanks to you!

  • @goodboybuddy1 He had a marvelous voice, didn't he? You're welcome!

  • Thank you, aaronsande. Julius Patzak was famous, racheleleeba, in the 1920s-1940s, but he never sang in this country. He was an outstanding singer of Mozart; he also recorded Verdi, Tchaikovsky, Thomas, Offenbach, and Smetana.

  • @runupahill1 You are most welcome! It has been my pleasure to discover Patzak!

I have two more CDs coming of JUST Patzak, probably with what you mention above but I can't remember...if Amazon will stop delaying!

"In stock" to me means they will ship it when I order it. 2 Months later shows they disagree with me on that. =/

  • @aaronsande Thank you for your comment. Another tenor from the same period who also never sang in this country was the Danish operatic tenor Helge Rosvaenge. He had a voice of "unusual splendor"; he sang in Toscanini's 1937 Salzburg production of Mozart's Magic Flute, and in his 1938 London production of Verdi's Requiem. Both can be found on semi-pirated recordings somewhere, but I doubt Amazon.Good luck!

  • @runupahill1 Thank you for the information! You can be sure I will try to find this tenor based on your recommendation!

  • Okay, so why isn't he famous? Thanks so much, Aaron, this is exquisite.

  • I have no idea! You are quite welcome!

  • New to me as well. He is truly superb.Thank you Candy!

  • You're welcome, and don't call me Candy! ;D

    LOL only kidding of course...

  • aaronsande-Candy is Candace AKA Kievest on you tube. A delightful lady, and I hope friend-who sent me this lovely recording. His Lensky's aria is also great.Thank you for this great posting-D.

  • paulostroff99 - thanks for forwarding and

    aaronsande for posting.

    John

  • Welcome!

  • I see! I've seen Kievest around but didn't meet her yet!

  • Hallo Aaron,

    ohne Zweifel verdient er dies!

    Danke für das schöne Video!

    Gruß

    Hans-Peter

  • Beautiful rendition.

  • I love online translation software...check out the comments above yours ;D

  • The great Julius Patzak! He has a wonderful timbre and sings so tasteful.

    Thanks for sharing Aaron.

  • Indeed, and you are welcome!

  • You've hit the jackpot. This is a gem. It is a quite distinct voice but with certain similarities in phrasing and tone to Björling - and every bit as appealing. You are right to place the quality of this rendition in the same league as Wunderlich - and I would add Gigli.

  • Yes. Gigli certainly belongs right in there! Thanks for the great comment, Barry, and I'm happy you liked it! There are 3 more I posted, hope you hear them! =D

  • I've long admired Patzak for the sheer beauty of his tone--as Doug states, similar to Bjorling's--as well as his innate musicality. Thanks for sharing, Aaron.

  • You're welcome!

  • The sound of a young man in love!

    Beautifully sung! Thank you for

    posting!

  • You are most welcome...it was my pleasure to share this wonderful lyric tenor!

  • Patzak had a long career, singing opera, oratorio and lieder. According to everything I've read, he was entirely self-taught as a singer. Although his voice was essentially lyric, he won great acclaim for his Florestan as well. That diminuendo at 2:18 is masterly:) --

  • Great comment, thank you! I thought his handling of this aria was particularly masterful, as you said =D

  • Excellent. Great falsetto coordination balancing the chest participation.

  • I finally found a good one LOL!

I just knew you'd like him...he's fantastic. Must get more. As I said I think I like him over Bjoerling even!

  • Gorgeous singing, indeed. Thanks for sending my way.

  • Wonderful (similar to Bjoerling!)

    Thank you, Aaron!

    Doug --

  • You're welcome, Doug. Thanks for the comment! 3 others on the way! And then I'm done for this week, LOL
