I just noticed that all towns in HOMM1 have the same road layout with a tavern and thieves guild.

I played this game for years, and now I see it for the first time.

Same approach for HOMM4 was the last drop for me to freak out and uninstall it and forget about it forever.

if you have more than 4 combat spells how do you access teh second set of spells? i can only see 4 spells at a time and do not know how to acess the remaining 4 without exhausting the 4 i already have. Yet when i go to auto-conmabt the computer will access spells off the second page immediately.

My very 1st PC game that I "totally" fell in love with! Still have both DOS & WIN95 CD versions but I purchased the GOG.com version because it runs like a champ on Windows 7. The Old Kings Bounty is fun, it no where near as polished as HoMM1. Still play the game today & you can find about 40+ single player maps from the Map Editor from the WIN95 verison! Enjoy everyone!

I love it in HOMM1 you can see each creatures lingering in front of their respective dwellings. I think it lends a really fairy tale-like and personal touch to them. Later HOMMs should've done this, IMO.

@MageAnakara That sounds like what happens when I run the windows version. Also with the map editor. The DOS version runs well for me in DOSBOX. If you need help with anything DOSBOX I'd recommend vogons(dot)zetafleet(dot)com as there are DOSBOX developers there that contribute to the conversation regularly.

I got HOMM1 purely for the sake of history, but this game is surprisingly fun to play :). Lots of nostalgic value, even if I have never played HOMM1 before (my first game was HOMM2).

GOG.com is a website that sells old games like these and HOMM1 is on the list. I've yet to see any game from GOG cost more than $9.99. The nice thing about GOG is that you can keep the game once you've bought it. No CD's to worry about, and you can download it as many times as you want.

You should really try running them through Dosbox! It's a really easy to use program as long as you make use of the "read me" files. Do a search for dosbox and you should find it easily enough; oh and it's completely free as well.

it's ok xD let me explain...The red tower is where you recruit "phoenixes", it's red because it represents "fire". Phoenixes are like firebirds, so it makes sense...

Then, the Stonehenge is a place linked with DRUIDS (you recruit these there). It is believed that celtic druids built it so...it makes sense that you recruit druids there.
