  • I had forgotten how beautiful a voice Karen Carpenter had. Karen and Perry Como are a good match.

  • A great loss in the music world. She had a voice of an angel

  • IT'S HARD TO BELIEVE KAREN CARPENTER IS GONE. SHE WAS ONLY 3 MONTHS YOUNGER THAN ME. R.I.P. KAREN AND MR.COMO YOU BOTH HAD GREAT VOICES.

  • Time goes by quickly. It was time for her to go. And all of us must go. Nobody is exempted.

  • Dow n_load any music at Media Outlet Online. Just search it with Gooogle :D

  • Oh Karen.... if I make it to heaven, you'll be there singing to me.

  • 3 musical legends of the 70's, and yet two of them were taken away... But their memories will always remain alive...

R.I.P. Perry Como & Karen Carpenter....

  • Thank videotape for these!

  • Beautiful Just Beautiful!

  • brought up on this evocotive memories

  • Thanks for posting this video ...its indeed gives tremendous uplift when i am down and out....their voices eases all my problems ...physically and mentally.

  • Wow this is real special

  • Really super and almost unbelievable. This video should have millions of hits, but alas, there is to much competition by the cliche crap that passes for music these days

  • that Richard Carpenter is a total dickhead...

  • such a nice music. no one beats the classics

  • Holy cow...this is like orgasmicly BRILLIANT!! Two of the best of all time together! No matter how many times I hear Karen's entrance to "Its Impossible" I get chills. *sigh* You will always be missed KC!

  • I love Karen. Was there anything that could have saved her from an early death?

  • Karen's voice and beauty..Perry Como..a legend of the 1950's..singing with a legend of the 1970's. this video is priceless.

  • Karen was viciously hated by many because she respected the adults that went before her. I hope the haters are severely punished for their crimes.

  • @thethoughtsofme You're kidding, right? You do understand how loved and adored this woman was by her friends, her high school teachers, fellow musicians, and the public? How so many still miss her to this day and think of her daily? How her ex-boyfriends still cry at the thought of her, in some cases 35 years after she dated them? If you're thinking of Joan Rivers and Bette Midler, they hated everybody out of terrified jealousy.

You won't find too many unkind words said towards Karen.

  • @improvguru No. The entire anti-authority movement had nothing but visceral contempt for this music and the people who made it. I can understand someone not preferring this music; everyone has their own taste, but to take it to the level of ragging hatred is a whole other monster.

  • @thethoughtsofme Reviewers actually had no problems with Carpenters music, but criticized their image; the "white bread brother and sister " thing. Rolling Stone Magazine actually wrote "the music is fantastic." Karen herself said that "they reviewed our audience. They didn't touch our music."

Karen is very highly thought of by most musicologists and critics today. She's always ranked as one of the all time great singers.

  • @JennTess1 After much reading and studying of videos and photos, I don't believe that Karen truly had issues with her weight. She went on one diet in the first 25 years of her life, and she hated it. She didn't dress like somebody with body issues. Her illness was related to the loss of her drums and and an attempt to get her family to care about her. She DID want to stop losing weight; it scared her.

There is no evidence that anybody ever called her "fat." She simply wasn't.

  • @improvguru She was definately anorexic, but their weight often goes up and down and they know they have an illness they just can't shake it. It's almost like telling a schzophrenic to shake it. It is caused by biology and also social problems in their life. I remember seeing her so thin I couldn't stand to watch her. She never lost her voice, but it hurt to see her suffering.

  • @cooltooth112 Why do you have to bring this subject up? Simply concentrate on the music of two great performers, rather than home in on the medical condition of one, and make comments accordingly. I might make a You Tube video on the 'Medical problems with Karen Carpenter' and the you can really have a go.

  • Even you said she was scared of losing weight, that's a normal symptom. They are aware of their illness, just like a person manic depressive(like me). I know I have it but I can't shake it. I feel sad as I was once a sucessful CPA, but in the last 10 years I have been determined to be permanently disabled and live on social security. I am now 55 and have tried every medicine and it is not working very good. I see many anorexics as I have been hospitalized so many times. They know they're ill

  • @cooltooth112 Have you tried a gluten-free diet, by chance? I used to have depression (I technically still do), but once I did that, I felt SO much better and got off meds. I was apparently gluten-sensitive and didn't even know it (I didn't have celiac disease or anything). That stuff messes with one's brain. Check various medical studies if you'd like, or just jump to something like Paleo diet websites for gluten-free recipes. Best of luck, and I know how you feel...

  • @cooltooth112 I hope you lick this. You can do it.

  • @thethoughtsofme Karen wouldnt have you hate anyone, but love them instead. Listen to her, she sang often of LOVE.

  • Karen my dear... we miss you and we will always love you !

  • Both superb artists.

Karen sings the Como legend hits so well.

  • With Karen and Perry it was pure magic! Thank you so much for this wonderful post!

  • She had such a calming , beautiful tone to her voice.

  • Some real tight sphicters here.

  • I'm in tears watching this--Karen, oh Karen, you were an Angel among us, for far too brief a time. We miss you. Wolfsky9, 64 y/o

  • Two great voices. Did anyone age better than Perry? He's 60 something here.

  • This is real??? Wow what a treat!

  • Oh gone too soon - she is singing in Heaven with her angelic voice

  • I have been looking for this clip for years. I saw this show when it was originally broadcasted. I love the combination of Karen and Perry. Thank you for sharing.

  • Perry Como... didn't they joke about him back in the day that he was so relaxed he'd nod and fall off his chair while singing a song. Got to be a regular comedy bit I seem to recall

  • @oakwoodx88 KAREN LIKE JOHNNY MATHIS NEVER RECORDED A BAD SONG RIP KAREN & PERRY YOU ARE MISSED.

  • Wow- a little super sensitive there No1KCfan6? Don't you think? Happy New Year to you too!

  • They're family...

  • amazing

  • I have just 'melted' and gone to musical heaven... Absolutely lovely.. the Golden Crooner Perry Como and the Amazing Crystal Clear Karen Carpenter.. ahh bliss :0)x

  • I remember this and never thought I would see it again. Thank you.

  • Papa's favorite (Perry Como) and my Favorite (Carpenters) what a good combination :)

  • Wonderful, magic. Thank you for sharing, strangers you have never met on the other side of the globe, enjoy this and feel the same emotions, we are all one...

  • What a voice Karen Carpenter had. And what a tragedy.

  • @Mrkissuallover12 Mama Cass died due to a heart attack! The chicken sandwich story is nonsense. Mama Cass had been dieting to bring her weight under control. Her heart couldn't withstand the strain and she went into cardiac arrest.

  • @Mrkissuallover12 LOL! THat's tragically hillarious. HAHAHAAH amazing wit you have

  • @tightfistedtitans- Yeah-- I like that one- I can't take ownership of it though.

  • @Mrkissuallover12 yah, good one! you know what else is hilarious? the thought of you getting brain cancer.

  • @Mrkissuallover12 You and I must be around the same age... let's say, around the block. That Karen-Mama Cass-Ham Sandwich joke truly made the rounds back then, and we knew it was just a joke... insensitive maybe, but we all knew it was a joke. I posted it somewhere else- I forget- on a Mama Cass video, and it was also misunderstood, the younger folks thought I just made it up myself, and was serious.

  • @defundthewar Has it occurred to you that fans just don't find that joke at all funny?

  • @mylittlebuckaroo No. So much time has eclipsed that the ham sandwich joke, like so much else- both in good taste and bad- has been forgotten, but mostly the fact that younger people never heard the joke, and young people have absolutely no use whatsoever for anything that occurred before they were born. You see things online like, 'Eleanor Roosevelt... isn't she dead?" or somesuch. And so when you repeat the joke, they think you've invented it just now.

  • @defundthewar I first heard the joke 28 years ago. It wasn't funny then, and it isn't funny now. Why would you post something so disrespectful on a Cass Elliot video anyway?

  • U won't like it but a lot of people don't sympathize with people who chronically overeat or undereat, and that is the crux of the sandwich folklore... how one act could have saved two self-victims. There is this endless laundry list of famine, poverty, birth defects and illnesses that need to be addressed, with innocent victims. That someone could imagine herself too fat and stop eating altogether, or eat all day and never exercise, whether you like it or no, is fodder for pop culture jokes.

  • @defundthewar OK. You just showed your ignorance about eating disorders. I guess your peer group WOULD find it funny.

  • You know nothing of me or my peer group- which is news to me that I had one. I know all I need about anorexia, bullimia, and the low self-esteem issues that keep that tubby Dr. Phil in business. Know what your problem is, aside from picking fights with strangers on the web? Here goes: anyone who doesn't fall in line with you must be stupid, ignorant, lacking information, sick... otherwise how else could anyone not agree with you? Maybe ultra-high self-esteem is your disease. Oh, Dr. Phil!

  • @defundthewar You seem like a lovely person. Why don't you go back to drowning puppies now and let the rest of us enjoy the video?

  • @mylittlebuckaroo It took you a full week to come up with that? Now stop engaging me in this- and I use the term loosely- discussion. If you lack for hobbies, I suggest you track down the epicenter of the Karen-Mama Cass joke, Ground Zero, the one person who thought of it, projected it into the media where it spread like wildfire, and decades later, still lives in our folklore. And tell him or her off. Now, to quote from a song of Karen's contemporary, Helen Reddy... "leave me alone."

  • @defundthewar I actually agree with pretty much your entire point, with one crucial exception. Karen did not imagine herself too fat. She wanted love and attention from her family. As she didn't abuse drugs or alcohol or sleep around, this was the only way for her to "act out" and thus hope that her family took notice and started caring. Didn't really work.

  • @improvguru As far as lack of family attention, I can tell you that growing up in white middle-class USA in the 50s and 60s, things weren't as touchy-feely as they are now. If every girl who felt neglected or otherwise pissed-off went on a collision course with eating issues, it would have been a wipe-out like the bubonic plague.

Karen was a nice girl, not ugly by any means, but a plain girl. Even now when a girl loses weight and people notice, it's OMG, it's like, so awesome.

  • @Mrkissuallover12 A VERY old and VERY tacky joke. You need some new material. Not the least bit funny.

  • This sucks. Donkeys. And I LOVE Karen Carpenter! Kill me.

  • thanks for posting

  • i am an indian with allmy life in indian classical music but when i lsten these two singers somethin happenes to me they both are superb

  • Beautiful combination. Keep in mind, Perry is 38 years older than Karen, thus his voice was not in his prime as hers was.

  • This is a great posting! How can you beat Como and the Carpenters? Saw Perry, but missed Karen and Richard. Seeing them all together would be an Superstar show!

  • OMG this is a classic Hidden treasure of a gem!

  • Happy Happy Joy Joy. Love both artists. Karen will never be replaced and neither will Perry. Just glad some moments are recorded for posterity.

  • this is classic!wish my mom and pap will see this... theyll be delighted thanks!!!

  • wow,we never hear these type of music any more

  • Makes you wonder why Richard Carpenter never produced for Perry Como who, ironically, gave Bacharach-David one of their first hits with "Magic Moments."

  • Richard did sound very nice here - Good breath control and tone.

  • @mylittlebuckaroo That's true, but he still had sort of a lisp at this point, and it's annoying. Fortunately he got rid of it later on.

  • This in relation to a post comparing the two greats----the poster claims Karen Carpenter blows Perry away in this video.

Karen was a great talent who passed on too soon----the world missed out on many more great years of her skill and talent.

However, please--------to downgrade the great Perry Como is sacrosant. This is one of the great talents and smooth voices of all time. I am sorry----nobody blows away Perry Como----nobody.

  • @jlsfla01 I agree - Karen's my favorite all-time voice, but Como is absolutely great. With the very best vocalists it comes down to subtle preferences and tastes, but no one can say he wasn't in that elite group. This was really beautiful.

  • Karen Carpenter.....What a Waste...R.I.P

  • wonderful

  • Thank you so much for posting. I am in tears.

  • karenfan is right. Avoice like Karen's is a miracle that can never be duplicated. And boy oh boy did I try. She was a once in a lifetime treasure.

  • WHAY A COMBINATION OF TWO WORD, GREAT ARTIST

  • WoW! that ending, that mix, there is some beautiful incredible chemistry. I love Perry Como, and this mix with the Carpenters, Karen is superlative, and Richard sounds amazingly great! This is really great!

  • Classic mixing of their hits! When Richard remixed the medley for the 'As Time Goes By' CD, he overdubbed his voice over Perry Como's! What a joke!

  • I wonder how many couples got married to "It's Only Just Begun"? (or included it in the wedding. After the fourty or so years since, they are still just as beautiful and magical as they were back in the day. As time is rushing by, faster for some than others, these musical moments can still be enjoyed. Yes, I know time is a constant, it' also relative to what is going on in your life. It was so wonderful to have Perry and the Carpenters be part of my permanent memory.

  • thankyou for posting this video. It is absolutely lovely....

  • Whoever put KC and Como together deserved the Nobel Prize.

  • I love the Carpenters!!!! Perry Como is also great :0 thanks for posting!!!!

  • I loved this show - at a time when - most of my friends - thought the Carpenters were corny. Their music - and Karen's vocal and dramatic talents - ring truer today -than they did then.

  • I noticed that the Internet Movie Database doesn't have all of Perry Como's Christmas Specials listed and yes like an earlier comment suggested this appears to be from the Christmas Special of 1974.

  • @cspaikido

Yes this was filmed in Nov of 1974, I believe. Karen is just starting her weight loss which would lead to dropping to 80 lbs by mid 1975. She looks and sounds amazing here. They would go on to record the Horizon album a few months later.

  • I agree about Karen's voice and add Roberta Flack. Nobody like Perry at all. Dean Martin as well.

  • Oh my goodness, what an angelic voice. I remember her voice, it is only God sent. I am so sorry her disease was not known at the time. I remember crying for days when she died. Yes, I will not judge but I do think their was some family expectations for her but, in this day and age, with help they would have been able to help her. Her family idid their best to help her in the day. I am sure they miss her so much, mostly Richard. I will go out and buy her cd, tommorow after hearing this vidieo.

  • @oceanmermaidmaine I agree about Karen's voice and add Roberta Flack. Perry Como and Dean Martin - no more like them. Just grabs you in the heart.

  • @oceanmermaidmaine

Kann Ihre Bewunderung für diese wunderbaren Stimmen nur teilen!

  • my father likes Perry Como, I love the Carpenters so this is GREAT! In here we can get a compromise! hahaha

  • karen's voice is just simply heaven sent. I'm 36 and there's no voice in my lifetime as yet to touch her. Shame she died so young because she was beautiful inside and out. RIP KC.

  • Fantástico, que grande encontro!

Dois grandes talentos da música internacional !

    Fantastic, great moment..we never forget...

    Lorena-SP - Brazil

  • Don't desecrate Karen Carpenter's memory and legacy with filthy, negative comments. Go to a Courtney Love video if you want to do this sort of crap.

  • Its a shame you people cant just enjoy the freakin music. You seem the the kind of trolls who cruise YT with the mute on,scanning comments and just flinging empty threats and insults.

  • What a beautiful voices...both of them, we would probably not get to hear this in these day.

  • Perry is from my hometown of Canonsburg Pa and Karen is my all time favorite female vocalist! PRICELESS!

  • @padude64 u know nothing politics u fucking moron! its was all left wing policies carried on by a FAKE republiccan president and followed by ur black messiah blowbama that fucked our country. THE GOVERNMENT THAT YOU BOW DOWN TOO DID THIS! ur an ignorant idiot

  • @padude64

    How ignorant you are.

  • God bles you people from Canonsburg pA

  • Karen carpenter rocks! She just rocks period!

  • This is a beautiful duo by both singers and I am so proud to admit that Canonsburg pennsylvania is full of talent!!!!!!

  • what the name of the first song karen sings please?

  • @ennisgiant The song is called "It's Impossible"

  • @improvguru thank you

  • @ennisgiant No problem.

  • WOW! Perry Como was from my hometown of Canonsburg pennsylvania and to see hin singing with Karen Carpenter rocks my socks off!

  • I still remember when Karen Carpenter died. Very sad. It didn't make any sense.

  • Why does wood suddenly appear, whenever you are near?

  • Karen Carpenter and Perry Como is like a DREAM TO ME!

  • I like Perry Como's recordings but I don't know how anyone can watch this video and not see how painfully obvious it is that as a singer he simply can't hold a candle to Karen Carpenter. (Not many can) She blows him out of the water! He looks insecure - intiminated by her talent. He knows he's not in her league. She absolutely nails "his" songs but he struggles to sing "hers."

  • @macmets The interesting thing, too, is that Karen may have been holding back out of respect. Unlike many of today's divas, Karen did not appear as a guest on somebody's show with the intention of showing them up. Both she and Richard had great respect for others.

  • @macmets well , I don't agree. Perry Como was an estabished singer who held his own from the early 1940's onwards, until his death. He knew his talent and his limitations, if indeed he had any. He obviously has respect for Karen Carpenter and shows it. He is not intimidated at all. He may even be holding back so that he can listen to her more intently. He certainly wasn't insecure! And, finally, you cannot compare one singer with another, especially in the international league!!

  • @charade97 You may not agree, which is fine, but I certainly "can" compare one singer with another - which is what you did as well. And what exactly is the "international league?" I wasn't bashing Mr. Como - a man you obviously have great affection for. And you're right, he did have his limitations. Singing next to Ms Carpenter certainly makes them obvious.

  • @macmets Karen's track was pre-recorded in a studio and she's lipsyncing. Perry is singing his part live. I don't think it's quite fair to compare his ability's and Karen's based on this video (and 1970's TV audio).

  • @lilbittn and so if she was? That girl has the best female voice ever so far..I'm 36 and still waiting for a female to match her talent. RIP Karen. RIP. John Denver.

  • @TheSami1973 - Let me say Karen is my all time favorite singer. My comment was in response to someone comparing Perry to Karen, basically saying that Perry wasn't in Karen's league. I maintain that it isn't fair comparison, where Karen's vocal was pre-recorded in a studio, and Perry's is done live w/ inferior mic-ing. Perry was 64 , been recording records for 32 years & had 14 number 1's. He a legend in his own right. No one needs to belittle either of them.

  • cruel comment not needed , they are both legends if u cant say anything nice don't say anything.

  • Although I did appreciate Perry in his time.....I admit I did not appreciate Karen. I do now.....she was a rare bird.

  • It's remarkable seeing and hearing these two legends together. They sing each other's songs with a similar but unique sound. It was great hearing Richard singing as well. Karen should have lived a long life like Perry. This kind of talent is very hard to find these days.

  • Perry is from my hometown of Canonsburg Pa and to have karen Carpenter sing with him is awesome!

  • They were mastersingers of one mind about how to sing a song. Don't perform it, live it from the heart. Don't give it curlycues and loops, sing it straight. Both had beautiful voices with great technique so together they are perfect. It's nice Richard participates. He has a beautiful voice but preferred to use it for background vocals.

  • Karen and Perry, two Grande Talented Singers....for the Maker of us>>>> all.....Voices of this Quality....not seen often Today....Brings back many memories of the Garland Era.. they sang from their Hearts, minds followed them through every valley of bliss....fearless of their own presence and critics...they knew what they had....Real God Given TALENT....HTH in Whg, WV.

  • By viewing this, i don't know who got a bigger thrill, Karen or Mr. Como. They both seemed to truly have a good time doing this.

  • @NordyMark0594 Indeed. That's how it goes when pros get together and do what they like to do. I think this became Karen's favorite genre of music in her latter years.

  • Wow, so obvious how smitten Perry was with Karen, and who can blame him. He couldn't take his eyes off her. I think he was enthralled with her talent and inner beauty. Perry sang their songs fine, but she sang his songs perfectly.

  • @antinotis Did you notice at the very end he reached over and gave her a tender kiss? I think he could see how thin she was and possibly knew she might not be around much longer. It's been years and I still grieve about the loss of Karen Carpenter. One of the greatest female voices of the modern era. There are no women singers these days who could come close to her.

  • If only they were both alive today! Bobby Vinton is Grande marshall in Canonsburg Fourth of July Parade, hometown of Perry Como. Karen would have been a tremendous hit!

  • I love her, she was beautiful, with the greatest voice ever...

  • Wonderful - there's no one like Karen Carpenter was ... and singing with Perry Como! I also like Anacani's (from Lawrence Welk) version too.

  • Karen must have been a joy to work with. Not only did she sound like an angel, she was so modest and so respectful of the other performers.

  • This is making me cry ; I'd forgotten about this wonderful duet. We'll not see the likes of this--ever again. I'm so Blessed to habe been there for all of it. Wolfsky9

  • Karen looks so proud that a legend like Perry is singing her songs.

  • Bobby Vinton will be the Grand Marshall in Canonsburg's 2010 Huge Fourth of July parade this year!

  • I believe that Karen's true calling was as a jazz/blues singer. She was a "chanteuse," a throwback to the 30's and 40's. Just listen to her!
