Why would anyone have to use this trick? Multiplying by 9 is just so easy. The way I used to do it when I was younger was to first multiply by 10 and then minus the number from the product once. Easy as π.

theres an easier way to do this but with ur fingers

first u hold up all 10 fingers, next u start with ur left hand, so if starting at 1, u put the finger to the farthest left down and u count all the other fingers and u have 9. then u do the same thing with each number

so for instants 2 u count 2, but u only put ur second finger down, so on the left of the finger u have down, u have 1 and on the right u have 8 so the answer to 9x2=18

Example:

9x4=?

9x4= (The first number is always n-1 where n is the number x9 as stated in the video) thus the first number is 3, now for the 2nd number... (what)+3 =9? answer is 6, therefore answer: 36. Simpler then doing all the multiplication tables, but otherwise the same as the video.

Back in the day when I had to learn these, I always thought you take one less than the number you're mulitplying by 9, then the second number is however many you need to equal 9 total.. 9 x 6... so you take 5, and 9 - 5 is 4. 54. Or you can hold out your hands with fingers extended and put down your sixth finger from the left and you have 5 fingers up, one down that separates the groups, and 4 up on the right. 54. Oh, I see azlady13 covered the first method already.

You don't have to know what 1x9 or 10x9 equals. start at the top with 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9. Then from the bottom up do it again 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9. No thinking involved. you'll get 09,18,27,36,45,54,63,72,81,90.

draw a line between 5x9 and 6x9. everything on the top is the reverse of what's on the bottom (45-54)(36-63). You can count from 1 to 9 by counting down to the line on the left and back up from the line on the right. Vice versa for the bottom. All the answers add up to 9. The beginning of each answer is one number less than the number you are multiply 9 by. The second digit will make the number add up to 9. 4x9 = 4 (-1=3) x 9 = 3 (+6 to add up to 9) or 36.
