  • I never seen a drummer sing lead before. That's different. I didn't know Narada sang that song. That song was a big hit back in the 79 and the 80's.

  • Fantastic music in a wonderful time! Thank you, Narrada!

  • Ryan Leslie and Narada have so much in common.

  • DLT. What a tit.

  • Love it Michael was reading my face book and friends with Mr. Agne's family, noticed you really made it big and so very happy for you---Denise class of 1972

  • Dave Lee Travis, one of about 2 or 3 'style' introductions he had up his sleeve for every number on Top Of The Pops ; another being his Prince Charles kind of 'oighty toighty' voice - thought it was comedy

  • Du lourd !

  • This may sound silly, but I don't know how drummers get that coordination down, especially drumming while singing lyrics. Just decades of practice I guess.

  • As a drummer I can say that just for playin' on Tommy Bolin's "Marching powder" song, Narada can be considered as one of the best drummer of the story...but honestly after that performance I can't find something very interesting in his playing...

  • Had no idea it was Randy J. on that wicked bass. One of my favorite tunes amongst many of NMW's great boogie tunes. They are not here on the tube, which is a shame. Check out his albums Victory and Confidence.

    KEEP THAT FUNK ALIVE!!

  • black people make good music

  • le look du mec au départ. J'ai cru que c'était carlos lol. Sinon la zic, ça l'fait. jkif le funk et disco.

  • That was about 5 mins too short. And it could have done without that hairy wanker Dave Lee Travis making an appearance! I never liked him, him or that Steve Wright...pair of tossers! I remember that DLT playing "Can you feel the force" then wingeing on about waiting for the disco bubble to burst. Well, you got your wish you hairy prick, and we lost some of the best music of all time. Happy now?

Anyway, got a bit sidetracked. Great song...leaves me wanting more! Gimme more Narada!

  • @Spiderwebsider Totally agree, these are REAL musicians who fucking own their instruments. That applies to more than just Disco music though, some really good rock artists back then too. The state of the fucking U.K singles chart now is awful, it is littered with X factor darlings, rap, R&B(Not the R&B I think of) with only the odd really good singer, band, thrown in now and again. Also this cringeworhty so called new sound of over produced, mega synthed, vocoded bollocks.

  • Play back.....Audio is from the original studio version and bass grrove is from the unique, funkiest, coolest, genius of TM STEVENS, please don't confuse.

  • @lucfan

.............You are right. TM Stevens did the audio. I was refering to the video which is Randy Jackson. Soul Train set was not setup for live audio, only lipsync

  • gr That is Randy.....I was there.

    dg

  • that is NOT randy jackson. i know him. that ain't him.

  • +1 im pretty sure its TM Stevens

  • yeah...check out my video....cc

  • sorry but that double guitar is so cool!

  • This was such great song. As an artist he is really underrated.

  • The finest disco funk record of all time, checkout the 12 inch version,so much better.D.L.T.was the king of radio one, great clip,i recall watching it on T.O.T.P.all those years ago, thanks to YOU TUBE for this.

  • Fucking playback, why didn't they use the live recording?

  • Actually none of the artist have ever performed live on Soul-Train since the beginning (1971). I pretty much have seen them all. I don't particularly know why, but American Bandstand was the same why.

  • BTW: - this isnt soul train - its Top of the Pops from the UK

  • Yes. You are correct, but the clip they played was from them performing on Soul-Train. In the background at 1:35 it shows a portion of the word TRAIN of Soul-Train lit in red. I actually watch that episode of Soul-Train on TV when it aired. We weren't able to pick up any UK TV stations during that time, but Soul-Train which was being aired on ABC at 5:00pm eastern time every Saturday we were. Oh, how this brings back memories.

  • Ahh,, yes - i follow you and i'm astonished that this occured on my beloved TOTP!!...and what a classic dance track -eh??..and thanx for the reply..spotty

  • Yes. You are correct, but the clip the played was from Soul Train. They were not performing on Top of the Pops here. In the background shows the word TRAIN lit from Soul-Train at 1:35. I've seen this episode on TV in the states. We couldn't pick up this program during that time, but Soul-Train we could. Plus those are Soul-Train dancers. Please watch the clip again?

  • The guitarist is playing a doubleneck, an obvious hint to John McLaughlin. But that is probably a copy by Ibanez, and not the real deal. The "Double Rainbow" guitar was handmade by a guy called Ray Bouge.

  • super titre

  • That's not Randy Jackson on this song.Randy didn't play bass until the 1980 album Victory.T.M.Stevens played bass on this album.

  • Randy Jackson is really a GREAT bass player. listen to him groove on that funky ass bass line that he makes look so easy. man i'll tell ya to me, that bass line takes over the whole song. GO RANDY!!!

  • dude randy jackson hahahaha he looks funny in the videos with his gumby hair cut

  • A really nice tune would love to of been clubbing when this was actually released but was only 12 at the time had to wait a few years before I could!!

  • Why's NMW wearing an Urkel outfit, lol? This is a nice jam though!

  • A fine - if little known - addition to the ranks of singing drummers.

  • Such a change from his early days with MO. I heard he was barely out of his teens when they recorded "Visions.." - all i can say is that he took Billy's drum stool and didn't miss a beat.

  • The TV presenter is Dave Lee Travis from the U.Ks radio one! This was favourite of mine back in 79!

  • YO DAWG! Randy's layin down on the acrylic see-thru bass...listen to that bass line, nice!

  • that is the whitest dude ever on guitar.

  • That's Marc Russo on sax!

  • high school memmories

    woo hoo 10th grade

  • how did narada and randy, at young ages they were both huge fusion stars, end up playing disco? haha

  • one of the best drummers(he playes with chick corea among others)

  • Indeed!

  • If today's youth would learn to read music and play instuments, maybe they wouldn't use so much profanity in their songs. These young rappers are great at sampling other artist songs, but they suck at making music.

  • Killer to find this, as it's axactly what I was looking for when I searche NMW.

  • Depends on what you're listening to doesn't it? I think you're missing the great musicianship in a lot of Hip Hop tunes — granted there is some woeful stuff out there. I intensely dislike it when someone uses the "music was better in my day" complaint.

It's lazy. You'll find plenty of good music, with good musicianship if you open... your... ears and make an effort to find it.

  • WRONG!!!

  • Name one hip hop artist who is playing an instrument and I'd bet you he doesn't consider his music hip hop.

  • mos def

  • Damn straight. The roots too. All the early 80s gang, like westreet mob. And by the way, a turntable is an instrument, when it's the right hands.

  • ...both your (unagisan) and the contrary position have merit. Might you have studied music theory? Music has always evolved, but with regard to Popular Music in the Western Tradition, much of the music produced prior to the early 80s+ proliferation of computerization, drum machines, sampling, and so on was structurally and componentially more sophisticated IN TERMS OF MUSIC THEORY, lending credence to the contrary position. In the American context and with regard to...

  • Your esoteric discourse is ephemeral, and certainly not a panacea for the apparent hegemony displayed by the music industry.

Industry moguls could be described as insouciant regarding their development of certain bands, but their obsequious behaviour towards bands was frequently asinine.

A paradigm has to be established, based on certain axioms which cannot be impugned. Oh by the way do you now realise you sound like a twat?

  • The maxim goes: "Never argue with a fool -- people cannot tell the difference." I'm not sure whether teaching a fool is also regarded as foolishness, but here goes:

  • A vociferous idiot happened upon what he regarded as a putrid scatological pile. Instead of quickly passing along, he stopped to inhale deeply, heave out as similar a pile as he could, and go off on a rant, loudly cursing whosoever birthed the spectacle. Judge for yourself who in this fable might be your '''twat'''...

With more profitable ways to spend my time, I shall not bother with any further installment from you -- respond if you feel so inclined only for the sake of third parties...

  • I'm waiting for the two of you to meet on some hill somewhere with your swords and feathered caps - challenging eachother to a duel. For everyone else's sake we hope neither of you return.

Now just shut up and DANCE!!!

  • ...the music produced by African-America, when mainstream executives ('white' lawyers and accountants) got involved from the mid/late 1980s onwards for the business potential, music progressively became more generic. The formulaic sound of just a few 'hit-making' producers was made ubiquitous. The situation was exacerbated by just a few industry conglomerates running the whole show. That said, I do agree that there is always good stuff available: one simply needs to seek it out...

  • ...for the interested, mine was a two-part reply to the comment posted by unagisan a month ago, with the '...both your' paragraph immediately preceding the '...the music produced' one.

It seems YouTube does not always post replies in order, or even beneath the comments they pertain to...just as the order of comments and replies is sometimes reconfigured whether by YouTube or the video sharer...

  • way to generalize a whole generation...

  • @joceeco A-M-E-N!!!!!

  • @joceeco actually the producer makes the music by using playback musicians and samples.

the rapper only raps the words

  • loved this song back in the day!!!!

  • This was the jam back in the day!

  • Wow - thanks for posting. He´s one of those producers whose magic touch is evident on loads of wonderful stuff. Anybody know if the fantastic track Burning Up was ever released? Trying to find it somewhere out there - another mega track!!

  • OMG, I remember that song. I love it. Wow!

  • Great memories....someone PLEASE post 'Divine Emotions' !!

  • LOVE YA!

  • Randy Jackson is a badass bass player

  • YES! Watching this is cool. I enjoyed this song way back in the day when I was a kid. Narada hit this one for dance floor & it had a good groove too. I hope he finds a new generation of fans today, for he surely is a natural talent to remember for the music books. Bad brother is he.

  • Narada is a real talented brotha---singer, songwriter, producer and drummer. Love this classic song.

  • Yeah, Narada is indeed one talented dude. The funk comes naturally to him, for sure. Have you ever heard the 12" version of this song, with bass solo in the middle? Man, is it bad!

  • That was music!!!

  • luv it, luv it, luv him!!!! randy's bad-ass too!

  • Please upload the video again it wouldn't play.

  • This is my song.

  • golden thanks to stevenarada, whoa his voice is realy magic, yes it was nice time.

  • Those were real and highly talented artists/ musicians. They arent fakes like most of today's. The bass, drums, horns were tight. Thank you for the memories.

  • Totally agree with your point about those guys were the real McCoy. Also, just listen to the 12" of Jamaica Funk by Tom Browne (with the amazing Marcus Miller on bass). Phew, they don't make 'em like that anymore...

  • yahooooooooooo, thanx so much

  • great song brings back memories

  • Love this tune!

  • just love the bassline in the song!

  • Narada is one of the best drummers ever ;). Dosen't show of on certain songs (as this one).

  • That's the Great Randy Jackson (America Idol Judge) on the bass

  • For God knows what reason the guitarist is miming with John McLaughlin's priceless Rex Bogue double rainbow.

  • one baaad bass line! mmm!!!

  • la verdad es que cuando escucho esta cancion, casi se me saltan las lagrimas, recordando los buenos momentos de mi juventud que me hiao pasar Narada Michael Walden.Fue una cancion himno en la discoteca que yo iba.

  • Steven, thanks for adding! I did some great dancing to this a few (many) years ago!! Is he touring at all?

  • Middlesexdrive, hahaha! I love ur name! No, he isn't touring, he hasn't toured as a solo artist for a long time!

  • Why on earth did Narada decide to do DISCO? His 1st album is on my top ten all time best. And it's out of print. What a waste of talent.

  • Mine as well... The Garden of LoveLight is a LP that EVERYONE should hear.

  • Where can one purchase a copy today? I've been looking everywhere for it.

  • LIKE NARADA AND ALL THIS PROD. with other group !

Great souvenirs on this song !!

    merci !

  • Smokin' Bass Line! That band is so tight!

  • Thanks .... For insight I do know him .. for records he one of the DJ that made sure dance and disco didn't make it in mid to late 70's check out floaters, Jackson ,emotions all number one in uk mid 70's I love disco and dance....from sad old 40 something disco boy/man now

  • The worst thing about this video is some sad old radio 1 dj doing intro to this classic .. I wonder what happen to him

  • Oh,you mean Dave Lee Travis, I think his nickname was the "Hairy Cornflake" haha! Yeah! he used to be a bit irritating, but he used to play good music in the morning, I remember him playing tracks from EW&F's I

Am a few days b4 it was out and going crazy about it!

I think he must be in a "Home for useless DJ's" somewhere haha!

  • si bailè este tema....que època la disco

  • What's really incredible is the Ibanez Artwood the guitarist is playing - the tribute to the Rex Bogue "Double Rainbow" that John McLaughlin played in the Mahavishnu Orchestra - where Narada got his first big gig.

  • Oh! you mean the guitar that Corrado Rustici is playing. Did you know that he used to play in a Fusion band called Nova? Narada produced an album for them. That's the great thing about Narada he did fusion, rock, funk, disco, pop,r&b and he did it well! Very Talent Geezer!

  • corrado rustici: guitar

t.m. stevens: bass (if I'm not mistaken)

    frank martin: keyboards

    marc russo: sax

    danny noe: trombone

    dave grover: trumpet

    wow what a band!

  • Wow! you do know ur stuff! haha, but it's actually Randy Jackson! (American Idol) on Bass. In fact (this is gonna sound wanky, haha!) I've meet Narada a few times, I've even been to his studio twice and hung out with him! he's a lovely guy, very inspiring to me as a musician and a person. I did ask him about some of his videos, some of which he couldn't remember! he was going to sort some out for me, but it didn't happen! haha! Man you know ur stuff!

  • =)) thank you, you know your stuff too. oh is he randy jackson? hmm yeah he is=) he's responsible for Whitney, Mariah & Shanice catapulting them to stardome. he's a great guy, a magician=)

  • But T.M Stevens did play the bass on the original track and on all of the "Dance Of Life" Album, so it was easy for you to make the assumption that he was playing in the video.

  • you're right he played the bass on 'dance of life', I thought Randy looks more slim but he's not. I'm gonna upload the 2. edition of The Real Thing-Can You Feel The Force video very soon, I've been lookin for UK Players, Central Line vids and all the UK JazzFunk acts.

  • into brit rock & hard rock/metal. funk is getting stronger here in a slow motion, nonetheless I won't give up listening to Narada & other funk/soul icons. If I'm not mistaken there is another video for 'Tonight I'm Alright', as well as some vid's from 'victory' album? It seems you're the special agent of UK jazz/funk=)

  • Wow! you know ur stuff! haha,I love "Victory" some really good tracks on there! I remember buying it when it was out! yes! there is a video for "Tonight I'm alright" but I've never seen it! I've been looking for it on some "cough" sites! haha!

  • you're the one stevenarada=)! narada & co. are jammin! thank you.

  • My pleasure! but I've looked at your profile and I notice ur nearly half my age!(I'm 43) haha! How come a young guy like you into the late 70's and early 80s stuff? It's good that you are, but I seem to be meeting a lot of people of ur age who are in to this stuff, haha!

  • I'm a special agent about 70's & 80's funk&soul&hip-hop, when the music were real music. generally as you stated above a lot of people around are interested about this stuuf but in my home town we are limited prior to this. %90 of youngsters are

  • I see! I love a lot the stuff that's out there now,(I think Pharrell is a really great songwriter on a good day, "Beautiful" is amazing!) but ur right,70's & 80's funk&soul&hip-hop was more real then, it felt good, it made you feel good!...

  • ...I these days there's too much hype, attitude, & over produced stuff! In fact some of it of late has been trying to copy the 70s & 80s sound ie Nelly's Promiscous(which I love!)& Gwen Steffani, stuff which makes me laugh because a few years ago, they didn't want to know!! haha!

I'll see if I've got somemore vids from that era and if I do,i'll put them up!

  • I'm a dj, I do play promiscous every night, cool song, as well as 'maneater'. I2ve been trying to keep my ears away from nuskool wave but I was told to play these tunes, sexyback, london bridge etc.. you're right about that lately they've been trying to copy oldskool sound and some of them are success.

  • I hate "london Bridge" but I like fergie! haha, ah!ur a Dj, now it all makes sense!

  • hahahha i found Stevenarada on this here.

lol, small funk world this is on youtube.

Stevenarada knows his funk, trust me :-)

  • Hi mate! how's things in Germany? haha! well you know how I like my late 70s early 80s funk/disco! I'm gonna have to look for some new clips to put up.
