You description of agnostic is wrong. Agnostic means that one believes the actual knowledge of whether god (or anything supernatural) exists is unobtainable.

This doesn't mean one is unsure, but rather they are sure that no one ever will have evidence for either claim.

Of course, one cannot prove a negative (I cannot PROVE unicorns exist, nor that they exist) so he probably changed to negative because he could find no evidence for god.
