The Aux units while probably a good idea on paper,in reality the reprisals would have been too great.All these men had families and were known in their village.Even if they killed the village constable who knew who they were,village citizens who may have collaborated could have easily worked out who had disappeared since the Germans arrived.Would these men really have blown up the local railway or murdered a few soldiers knowing it could cost their families lives aswell as their own?

Well, Polish resistance, mainly the Home Army, fought the germans from the beginning of the war, to it's end, and since 1944, it was also facing Red Army, NKVD, and later on, Polish communist colaborators. Eventualy, in mid 50s, most of the underground was dead or imprisoned, but none the less, without any support from the west, they fought two empires for over 15 years (last resister was killed in 1963!), so I disagree that brits would only hold for a couple months.

@ad220588 I'm a bit of a history fanatic, but military history in particular fascinates me greatly. The power of the German Wehrmacht versus the other European armies at the time is amazing. Blitzkrieg is certainly a brilliant tactic. The speed at which the British, French, Polish, Soviet and countless other armies were overwhelmed is absolutely staggering. I do admire Field Marshal Rommel specifically. A tactical genius, and a very respectable man.

Don't agree about blitzkrieg. It worked well under certain limited circumstances, but there was a major problem that tank movements outstripped the ability of infantry and support to keep up. It actually broke down big time in Russia in 1941; some generals were able to see that Barbarossa couldn't succeed then; and of course it wasn't a defensive technique. Remember, Germany achieved NONE of its original objectives in Russia.
