According to the CD description this song is about an old proverb from Kenya. A man saying to his son.."Go see the world but, never forget from where you come".
@missaliamay I was wrong, he plays nyatiti (a lyre-like stringed instrument), which sound just little similar, there is also a bass guitar and i think acoustic steel guitar in this record. Peace.
@ikholomani HI, iwould appreciate if you or anyone lese can let me know if they know of any other African artists or songs that have a similar vibe to this...many thanks
Did anyone sit in silence after the song was done or is that just me? I dont know why but this song puts me in tears when i listen to it. I agree with everyone else that this is a beautiful song.
I listened to this song first time when I was 10. Since then I was searching for this and finally found it now, that I'm 18. But I still love it the same. It's a really beautiful song!
Beautiful....I was searching for this song as a single WEB Wide after viewing The Constant Gardener but I found it here so it's cool. If this doesn't move you. You are Soulless.....
I loved this song within the first minute I ever listened to it, a few years later, I saw it in that movie, The Constant Garderer and it fit so perfectly into the story, even if I don't know the words.
Then again, these powerful sounding words... do not need translation. :-)
Wealth in some parts of Africa is measured in cattle owned, not pieces of metal, which can't be used for much except decoration, if'n you think about it.
@bleumangue Pretty right. Yeah my people back then would swap a wife for cattle. The chick with the best attributes got the most cattle for her fam. wasn't a trade though coz , she could always go back, Oh and the guy in the song is telling the kids to bring home the cattle from the grazing fields coz a deluge is is bout. Note: grazing cattle was a whole day activity in my culture. Be realy cool to hear other peoples way of life.

@missaliamay I think the main instrument is mandolin.

@martini449 it can't be a mandolin it's a traditional luo string instrument called a nyatiti

Children its raining! What are you doing? Bring home the cattle, bring home our wealth.
Does this mean anything specific in African culture? Like how "gone to see a man about a mule" means mind your own business.
gcecelie 1 year ago
@gcecelie It means "just sit down and enjoy the song"
