Loved this number, and I actually remembered a lot of it, from the original airing. However, I'd forgotten about that great build up at the end, in their glamorous gowns, only to get pies in the face!
Thanks SO MUCH for posting this. I hadn't seen this segment since it originally aired, over 30 years ago. Though the term is much maligned and misued today, Lucy and Bea were truly "old school", had class, and it showed.
If you notice, at 3:36 in the clip, they cut from the close-up shot to a wider shot. They probably did the costume change before shooting the last two clowns exiting the stage on that shot, so when they pulled the walls apart they were already in costume and ready for the next part.
I love the two of them...both look great in those dresses and I think the color of each dress suits them quite well!

CBS was strong in 1978,but even their Monday nights were not enough to compete with Monday Night Football on ABC.

Thanks. I missed the Monday night show when it aired because I was a kid and it was past my bedtime. I only got to see the weekend shows.

What year was this?

March of 1978. CBS included their years from radio in calculating their 50th anniversary.

It was shot in 1977 - and aired in 1978.

That was take 2 on the pie-throw ---
the stagehand was so nervous, he
missed on the first try. I think it was
about at least an hour between takes
to get them cleaned up.
