Hyenas are just more interesting than lions. They're more intelligent, even besting chimps on some measures, have a more complex social life, are more caring of their young, are much better hunters, have some _interesting_ anatomical peculiarities...the list goes on and on.

I can understand people being squeamish about them eating their prey alive, but don't kid yourself that the lion kills its prey out of "nobility" or mercy. They'll eat alive anything that doesn't fight back—very, very slowly.
