This comparison is one sided.... one is a hot hatch intended for extreme lap times and great handling while the other is a king of drifting and a pony car that will whip many in cruising at high speed. But the judge in this case loves hot hatches. This STI getys whipped by the Focus RS 500, its intended competition, which is front wheel drive by the way!
I had a 2008 STI, and if that blew away the Shelby, than that Mustang is sad. I say this because of all my rally cars (STI's, and Evo's) the 2008 STI was crap compared to the others.
I love how this guy speaks of the STI like its some miraculous gift from Subaru. He reminds me of one those 'As Seen on TV' commercials like Subarus pullin off some kinda gimmick with the STI

With an AccessPort tune/Stage 1 or hell go for a Stage 2 and set the center console drive system to S# and hold on for some real fun. AWD cars are so much more planted in real world situations. If you haven't driven AWD do yourself a favor and try one.

I saw a mustang gt last winter in 1 inch of snow. He was trying to move from a stop at a light. Even though he was cautiously accelerating, the rear tires were spinning and the back end kept slipping left and right. That is the only reason I bought the WRX over the GT.
I'm a mustang gt guy and the "shelby" GT version is a waste of an extra 12,000 dollars. Get a base one and throw a few bucks at it for a drag ready mustang.
That was a horrible year for the mustangs. But that's why you wait for the new ones, it doesn't turn but the 2012 with 540hp is nothing to joke around with. But I guess when they ask for $50,000 it's to be expected, did you know they put the ford GT engine in the new shelby's, that's awesome.

The suspension has been tuned, the car sits lower, and it slightly wider. It makes 305 to the crank. Can you guess what it makes to the wheels?

Im about to get an 08 subie, im a life long and still am a mustang/almost any kind of muscle car fan. But i live where i would only be able to drive my stang maybe 8 months out of a year if im lucky and i found the only replacement i could take over a stang is a sti. The mustang will have to wait to be my second car :/. To the subie owners out there..could you tell me a good aftermarket site like (americanmuscle) for the stangs? Both of these cars are great, just depends on you.
@xmodrock Dude I'm a Subaru-fan, and Subarus aren't the car to use if one wants to go fast in a straight-line. A Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is a more suitable-comparable car since it has a closed-deck engine for higher HP and torque.
But it should be blatantly obvious that an American V8-engined vehicle is far more suitable for straight-line dominance.
@xmodrock I wouldn't be surprised if the Mustang Cobra (if that's the one you're talking about) would outhandle any newer Mustang because of the independent rear suspension.
As for older STI's, in terms of engine quality, yes.
@AWDfreak quality is everything.. and i don't like that toyota owns subie now... and the 99-04 will probs outhandle the new mustangs... my 99 cobra handlles damn well.. much to my surprise i can easily take corners at 55-60

@Emka951 the GT500 is thirsty at 23 highway MPG. the BOSS 302 which can actually out handle the STI gets similar MPG at 26. nowadays the V6 mustang/camaros get a little over 300 HP at a surprising 30 MPG. for your subaru the AWD feature likes to sip on gas.

if launched by a mustang driver not a subaru driver the GT500 currently will do 0-60 in 4.0. now the BOSS 302 is out and is designed to race at a track yes with turns in it. ive seen the boss pull a 1.0g on the skid pad. gt now has 412 not 300 and the GT500 has 550 and is planned to have over 600 for 2013. subaru loses

@reoxex these older mustangs sucked. now they have good performance. 0-60s are around 4.0 depending on the driver. the 302s are mustangs that are built to handle, race cars. they have 444 HP and a bunch of electronics and structural stuff to improve handling. 1.0g on the skid pad.

@WRXmayyyne as of the 2011 model redesign the GT would have won a lot more of the categories. over 100 more HP and its lighter. they can actually handle now too. upgrade the then new mustang BOSS 302 and you have something similar in price or a few thousand more that can go faster and turn much tighter than the STI. on pavement at least. the STI was designed with dirt rally track in mind.

AWD is just easy/noob mode of cars. like aim assist if your a gamer at all. get a good driver and the mustang boss 302 could do rally races too.
I never said that the Boss 302 would lose. Only that it would have trouble with a 2011 STi, which says great things about the 302's handling capabilities. It's even capable of putting down a BMW M3. That's impressive in itself.
I don't like Ford.. I have a 2004 Ford Ranger and a 1993 Honda Civic. My Ranger has 80,000 miles on it and barely runs while my Civic has 145,000 miles on it and runs fine.

The mustang: nonfunctional hood scoop, "racing" stripes, fake hood ties, and labels all over the car showing off what it is. THAT is a ricer. oh yeah and even though the mustang obviously isnt built for rally, the subie isnt built for straight line fag racing, but it kills the mustang in its own game.

@WRXmayyyne Ha you're on crack if you think the 2011 STI has 100 more HP kid. It's still the 2.5L Boxer motor that you can find in the 2004 STI. No differences. The suspension has been tuned, the car sits lower, and it slightly wider. It makes 305 to the crank. Can you guess what it makes to the wheels?

Im about to get an 08 subie, im a life long and still am a mustang/almost any kind of muscle car fan. But i live where i would only be able to drive my stang maybe 8 months out of a year if im lucky and i found the only replacement i could take over a stang is a sti. The mustang will have to wait to be my second car :/. To the subie owners out there..could you tell me a good aftermarket site like (americanmuscle) for the stangs? Both of these cars are great, just depends on you.

@xmodrock Dude I'm a Subaru-fan, and Subarus aren't the car to use if one wants to go fast in a straight-line. A Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is a more suitable-comparable car since it has a closed-deck engine for higher HP and torque.
But it should be blatantly obvious that an American V8-engined vehicle is far more suitable for straight-line dominance.

@Emka951 the GT500 is thirsty at 23 highway MPG. the BOSS 302 which can actually out handle the STI gets similar MPG at 26. nowadays the V6 mustang/camaros get a little over 300 HP at a surprising 30 MPG. for your subaru the AWD feature likes to sip on gas.

if launched by a mustang driver not a subaru driver the GT500 currently will do 0-60 in 4.0. now the BOSS 302 is out and is designed to race at a track yes with turns in it. ive seen the boss pull a 1.0g on the skid pad. gt now has 412 not 300 and the GT500 has 550 and is planned to have over 600 for 2013. subaru loses

@reoxex these older mustangs sucked. now they have good performance. 0-60s are around 4.0 depending on the driver. the 302s are mustangs that are built to handle, race cars. they have 444 HP and a bunch of electronics and structural stuff to improve handling. 1.0g on the skid pad.

@WRXmayyyne as of the 2011 model redesign the GT would have won a lot more of the categories. over 100 more HP and its lighter. they can actually handle now too. upgrade the then new mustang BOSS 302 and you have something similar in price or a few thousand more that can go faster and turn much tighter than the STI. on pavement at least. the STI was designed with dirt rally track in mind.

AWD is just easy/noob mode of cars. like aim assist if your a gamer at all. get a good driver and the mustang boss 302 could do rally races too.

1)You're crazy if you think for a second that AWD is 'easy' to drive. It actually resists you during a corner.
2)2011 STi is radically different than this one. Boss 302 will have trouble with it on a track with curves.
3)It's the gearing/AWD in the STi that is the cause of lost MPGs. The gears are just too short.
4)Muscle cars today have longer gearing than before. They have the TQ/gearing necessary to achieve 30mpg.
5)No mustang can or will beat an STi in a rally race, tires or not.

I never said that the Boss 302 would lose. Only that it would have trouble with a 2011 STi, which says great things about the 302's handling capabilities. It's even capable of putting down a BMW M3. That's impressive in itself.
