Probably the best RTS of it's time. Sadly missed because of Total Annihilation (I never understood why, though - Dark Reign is definetely better polished), but packing a bunch of unique and enjoyable features, creamed by an awsome soundtrack, suitable for a triller-action blockbuster movie, rather than a limited audience computer game... My respect to the creators!

@runaimad I think TA is better as a multiplayer\skirmish game, although the campaign in DR is superior. Total Annihilation needed less combat\base micro, for example you need to keep ordering rigs for new buildings in Dark Reign which is annoying. No naval combat in DR, lots in TA. Better range of aircraft. Polygons v sprites, 3D terrain, I could go on but the character limit is approaching :p

First RTS game I ever played was dark reign 2, I used to pronounce it as dark raigun 2, since I was a little kid back then.

Have this game got it in 1997 had a choice of new game I bought this one :D Ripped the soundtrack all of it done by Jeehun Hwang he's awesome still around too in shows and games with music.

@DVengence1 Actually DR was one of the most underrated rts games ever.

Sure, it wasn't a masterhit but it had great potential. I guess it got lost in the shadows of Red Alert and SC

@Makedonwow I was in Costco with my mom, and I saw both this game and Starcraft on the table with the other computer games. She said I could only have one, so I picked Dark Reign. This was back when PC games came in the oversized boxes and had a cover panel that opened, revealing a 2 page spread image. If you did that with Dark reign, you got to see an Imperium level 3 Command Center being attacked, which a beautiful rendering of a Spider Bike screaming past. That's what sold me on it.
