  • "Are they going to make the case against gay rights? Because there is such a case" Wtf? This seems like one of those times you could replace the word gay with racial group and it is so obviously bigoted, so why is okay to say about gay rights?

  • @graceleehm It's still propaganda. Propaganda means that there is communication aimed at changing someone's attitude. If it's a fact it should be said as a fact. If it's a controversy to discuss, both sides should be presented. Similarly there's no need to do an exercise to empathize for blacks because we aren't trying to convince any reasonable person to agree with black rights. I totally agree with gay rights, but pretending like this isn't propaganda is just silly.

  • Rachel is the realness and ole' Tucker is a fearful guy who likes to argue. These are civil rights. I hope in the future we will all look back on those who stood in the way and say they were just like dime a dozen racists.

  • Walk a mile in straight people's shoes, Maddow! ...I could assist, if needed.

  • @daedae69

You didn't...know? She mentions it (when relevant) ALL the time! Lol

  • Damn rachels gay!?...there goes my chances!

  • Tucker Carlson is a moron

  • This was remarkably frustrating... it seems so many Americans are prudish, its unbelievable :s I've also seen this questionnaire. It's not meant to actually be answered anyways... it simply takes many of the questions heterosexuals pose to homosexuals (such as the ones you heard above, "when did you decide to be homosexual, what caused it, etc.) and reverses them for heterosexuals. The outrage is because being put in such a position is very likely to make one realise the fallacy of homophobia!

  • IT IS ABOUT SEX = wow ...FACT. please someone agree with me.. its a fucking god damned fact... homosexuality? its about sex? its about sexual attraction? nothing else?! gay people arent different BESIDES THERE FUCKING SEXUALITY? wow

    maddow admit facts.. wow... childish.

  • O.k my take on this is Yeh I think if I can remember a Teacher bringing this kind of topic up when I was a Junior or I think senior in my high school Year. I Told her To shove it up and shut up :D Because The Class Room is not a place for this Kind of Issue. The more this topics pop up in class Rooms the more Students would want to try doing sex with the same sex. Trust me I know this because I have witnessed a dude change because he didn't know himself lol

  • @gkent101 You are an idiot it actually amazes me how fucking stupid you are.Are you doing it on purpose or does it come naturally?Btw your moms expertise is dick and between me and you shes WAY over paid.

  • You don't need half a brain to tell that this man is completely against treating gays equally.

  • you don't have to give equal time to both sides when one side is wrong, ill let you all figure out what side that is.

  • He makes me so genuinely angry in every interview I have ever watched.

  • He makes me so genuinely angry.

  • @RealTime88 my comment was in reference to the fact that he said almost all americans agree we are pro civil rights, but that we do not all agree on gay rights.

  • "Why are teachers talking to our kids about sex?"

Uh...sex ed is wrong now then?

  • Dear Tucker Carlson, gay rights....ARE civil rights.

  • @KELSCENE He's pro gay marriage the last time I checked, but you should ask him. I think he is only saying some people do not have the right to ask anyone under the age of 18 about their sex life and if someone were to do that they would go to jail for that.

  • WON'T SOMONE THINK OF THE STRAIGHT PEOPLE!

  • @marshalle1026 believe me, we have. For quite some time now.

  • Tucker Carlson is too busy being an asshole to be hysterical

  • In Tucker Carlson's retro world an acknowledgment of the arguments for gay rights is akin to support for gay rights. I'm glad MSNBC got rid of this right-wing rag; he found his true home, of course, at Fox Noise

  • She justifies the questionairre as "Its what people ahve said to me". Stupid people hasstle her with dumb questions so she dumps the same stupid questions on kids. I don't like it.

  • @virilitytraining Apparently you missed the point of the whole exercise?

  • @virilitytraining

they ask these questions to help people realize that sexuality isnt really a choice. it just happens. i didnt wake up and decide. HEY IM GOING TO BE GAY TODAY! theres a lot of LGBT hate. she didnt "dump" the questions on them. it was the school.

  • lol this was hilarious

  • Cause of heterosexuality? LMAO. I'm all for gay rights and gay marriage, but that is a spin and loaded question.

  • Gah, I love her. *-*

  • @AllHailGaga I like seeing Tucker and Rachel debate. They are both very intelligent and thoughtful pundits in cable news.

  • @RealTime88 No way, he's a douche.

  • @RealTime88

No, Rachel is a thoughtful and intelligent pundit in cable news. Tucker spits out typical conservative minconceptions and misinformation without anything to back up his claims.

  • He is such an obvious closet homophobe.

The questionnaire was obviously designed to get the kids to question and scrutinize heterosexuality in the same way that homosexuality is constantly questioned and scrutinized.

Most people never get asked "Why do you think you became a heterosexual?" But most gay people have been asked that same question at least once.

  • High school students shouldn't be sleeping with anybody. This is NOT an apropriate questionnaire for minors! I would take this in college but if they had tried to make me take it in highschool, I'd just take it home and show it to my parents.

  • @RobbytheLion If I was takinng a guess, they probably did this because more high school students are having sex than in the 60's when my father was in high school. But I agree high school students should not be sleeping with anyone and the parents have a right to complain. But the point is, I think I know why the school did that.

  • I bet they had the worst make-up sex ever.

  • i dont know about this aye both make good points

  • i love that she said hysterical. but he hasn't got a womb!

  • Ding ding ding Tucker's a closet homophobe ;3

  • This is stupid. You know your gay way before you ever consent to sex. You don't have to sleep with someone to know that you are gay! I mean you spend your whole waking day thinking about sleeping with someone, asking them out, kissing them. That tells you what you sexuality is. I fell head over heals in love with a woman we had a relationship that didn't include sex! You don't have to sleep with someone to confirm your sexuality that's just dumb, these parents have a right to be angry!

  • I totally agree. You don't wake up one day and say you're gay. You've always been gay, and now you're comfortable talking about it, and acting on it.

  • and a dude

  • canadianspirit is gay

  • Who is canadian spirit? Are you referring to me?

  • Um, okay. Is that a problem for you? And I'm not a guy, by the way.

  • 2:53 re.Walk a mile in someone else's shoes - Someone emailed me this today :) Walk a mile in someone else's shoes before critiquing them 'cus then you are a whole mile away when you diss them, AND you get to keep their shoes :p

  • Rachel Maddow is so right on this issue. Keeping teenagers who, in a few years will be adults, ignorant about what their fellow classmates are going through doesn't do them any favors. Also, talking about an issue and trying to evoke empathy for people who deal with the issue on a regular basis isn't "pushing an agenda" because as a teacher, you are obligated to prepare students to live in the world with other people, not abide by whatever their parents party lines are.

  • Conversation terminated.

  • Jesus Christ. "OMG HOW DARE PEOPLE ASK HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ABOUT SEX!" Who frigging cares? It's just sex, teenagers are obsessed with it, I highly doubt that they would mind. Adults project so many of their fears and prejudices onto young people, as if they're doing it "for the children!" Give me a break. Only in America...

  • It's not meant to actually get the answers to the questions from the high school kids. Who cares who they are sleeping with?

The point is to make them THINK!

  • The questions are ones that are commonly asked of gay people, just turned on their head. "How do you know that you're gay if you've never slept with a person of a different gender?" and "When did you first realize you were gay?" are asked all the time, so it's an obvious spoof of the way people question gays. The questionnaire was no doubt designed to get students to think more deeply about these issues and generate debate.

  • I'm quite explicitly pro gay rights, but I think asking students these questions is really questionable.

I'm sure tucker cherrypicked questions that were the strangest, but if those were really there then I'd be disturbed at least if I found out about that at a local school.

There definitely had to be a better way to introduce that perspective than asking such explicit questions.

  • Im not sure the questions are so explicit. they arn't asking who these kids are sleeping with, or suggesting they should sleep with someone of same gender, as tucker suggests. they are just asking "how do you know you're straight" is that such a bad question?

  • I'm sure everyone asks themselves that at least once, but I wouldn't like some school issued questionnaire bringing up those thoughts in kids.

  • GAHHH I just want to jump in there and join rachel!!! Drives me isaine when people don't understand something that seems so obvious...

  • I think the survey itself is irrelevant to give out (kinda creepy for ur teacher to lookin at that kinda intimate bizness), but I do believe they should solidify gay rights by having the class recognize that gay ppl aint no different from hetersexual folks. We all Americans and we all are entitled to the same rights.

  • ah she's so much more awesome than him

at the end when she gets all heated (yet with a smile) she reminded me of a muppet though :p not sure which one

  • the sexual tension is electrifying.

  • This sucks more than the time I sent money to Nigeria

  • so tucker, does that mean that if a teacher wanted to teach about civil rights in the early 50's and so on that wouldn't be okay because it would indoctriniate students to be for civil rights

  • I miss Tucker & his bow tie even if he can be an idiot sometimes

    <3

  • Tucker Carlson should kill himself. ¿Verdad?

  • You can see Tucker Carlson's brain hit the wall here.

It's like watching a monkey try to write with a pen.

And wow, Rachel is so obviously right. You can talk about something without endorsing any one side of it. Asking someone "Do you believe in evolution or ID?" doesn't mean you're endorsing ID or evolution.

And another wow: Rachel is hot. I don't care that she's a lesbian, I want to fuck her like crazy.

  • wow Rachael your good i was on tuckers side at first and you turned me.

  • this is social study class. SOCIAL.

  • I think Tucker was doing his job as a journalist by trying to be controversial.

  • I think Tucker is functionally retarded.

  • I love Rachel Maddow-she sure knows how to tell it like it is! Tucker just looks ignorant! I also agree with bluegrrl70-Rachel is pretty cute when she gets fired up!

  • Tucker needs to come out of the closet. He keeps his hair like that to deter people from "outting" him.

  • oh goodness how dare we "impose" compassion and empathy on our youth!

  • Rachel's really cute when she gets fired up.

  • @bluegrrl70 yea if youre a bulldyke which I assume you are

  • Tucker is wantonly stupid.

Like Rachel said, the survey is an exercise in empathy. And if Tucker has an issue with *gasp* teens, some of whom are gay and know it, being exposed to a "pro-gay" situation (for, what? 5 minutes?) then does he equally recoil knowing that the majority of the time these same kids are exposed to its opposite?

By FAR, by far, we experience more anti-gay experiences from our so-called education system than we do positive ones.

  • as far as i am concerned, gay rights are civil rights.

  • bloodelf, your comment expresses perfectly the need for just such excercises.

  • i can definitely understand this type of questionnaire at a college level; and depending on the region and age of the students i can see it in high schools. But if this was taken by a freshman class in the Southern USA... hell no... thats just not gonna happen.

  • Everywhere else I've heard about this, it was said that it was a group of seniors, not freshman.

  • i guess seniors would be ok... although still be pretty risky. southern schools would not approve.

  • It wasn't a southern school, but a school in a REALLY small town in Michigan. Either way, probably not a smart move overall, but I still think it's needed to get the students to think.

  • i know it wasnt a southern school. im saying that the acceptance of this questionnaire would depend on region... and i know southern schools would say "no."

  • Rachel's right; Tucker's hysterical.

  • *facepalm* You know what? I'm not convinced Tucker is smart enough to understand the subtlety of what Rachel was saying.

Just for the record, I feel like that questionnaire is a perfectly acceptable exercise in the classroom.

  • I don't think what Rachel said was particularly subtle. It didn't need to be! She was incredibly straightforward and laid it out for him, making a distinction that is so fundamental that it doesn't even need to be subtle, and he still didn't get it. In other words....I agree.

  • i was a lesbian child and am a lesbian adult.

wtf is this guy an IDIOT.

  • Tucker is annoying.

  • Its funny that he says that he doesn't "Gay Bash" when he off handedly admitted to bashing a gay mans head into a wall in a restroom. Hypocrite! XD

  • This story is idiotic! I've given that same questionnaire to my students and it's NOT SERIOUS! It's used as platform for allowing (largely) heterosexual students to see what it's like to be a gay person. This Tucker Carlson guy is OBVIOUSLY a gay bashing homophobe.

  • He has admitted to bashing a gay mans head into a wall at a restroom.

  • amazing. some people here say it doesnt belong to a sociology class?and that the argument tucker says is right?of course, bashing and discrimination has the equivalent value to empathy and social awarenes. right...

  • You can't make someone lean one way or the other... covering this issue in class is more than acceptable.

  • You know... Tucker looked pretty gay and kinky in that bow tie... lol

  • WOW....SOOOOO rude interrupts, and doesn't let her talk, or let rachel stat her point!! People like him infuriate me!!

  • Logic vs. hysteria. Carlson has no leg to stand on!

  • i don't think people got your sarcasm..
