Another thing that's slowing you down in those 20 kt conditions is too much canvas: you need one reef in the main. If you do that, the boat will stand a bit taller and be faster.

@Houdi2 i would to typically. in this case the kids loved heeling and conditions were controllable and on a short crossing. we were regularly hitting 7.5 knots. had the wind picked up a bit, we'd have reefed. thanks for the post.
