What lyrics. Great Lyrics is what pulled me into being a lover of rock n roll first. I think its why I have an above average vocabulary (for a blue collar fellow !) and seem to know words I didn't know I knew in the spur of the moment. On this eighth day of the week I hope we can all have a lite fun and get away from all the negativity before 2012 begins. Happy New Year Everyone.
How is it that Tom can so easily convince you that he wrote his song solely about you? This song hits so close to home for me that it makes me tear up.
You can really hear the influence of The Birds in Mike Campbell's Fender.
Men ! TOM PETTY is just god !!!! Whatever he is doing. Best musician for the last 20 years. You are all very fucking stupid people, if you don't see this. He is an exceptional talent. Actually he was that, all the time. Thanks TOM, you followed my hard yougster times and I'm still alive, like you. Have a beer sometimes :) !!!
I fought against nine assholes and in my mind I was playing this song, well and a little bit of Pantera just to make myself stronger XD. Even though I got my arse kicked so bad that I had to go to the hospital. Dudes, the lesson here is: do not scare easy unless getting scare is a rational thing to do
@HometownHonky That's not very nice. You don't like my music and I don't like Pantera. Get over it. If you don't like it don't post. Just exit. Geezwiz. When I first read your comment I thought you were talking about the chick bread and soup restaurant. So there. We're even. Nighty night.
Like many of you, I never heard of this Petty song before Appallosa but as soon as I heard it, I had to listen to it again and again. Its such a simple sounding song but very affective. I love it; and now is one of my favorite songs.
IIIIIIII should of known to keep an eye on you!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tom Petty is a "real" folk singer to me. Bob Dillion and the others don't mean anything to me...I'm not from that time period. But, Petty's music has allway's ment someting to me. I'm just glad I can enjoy his music in real time. Great song for a great movie.
@gorky45 Tom Petty does rock. He got a LOT of his influence from Bob D-Y-L-A-N and the Byrds. His greatest influences are Dylan, Beatles, R Stones, Byrds, etc. The British Invasion and 60s Rock. He learned about all of the music he loves now, Blues/Rhythm, etc from the bands he adored as a teen and young adult. :-)
@tompetty1976 I'm sure your righ about his influences...I just think Petty is a much better musician and singer then the past folk singers like Bob Dillion...;-) just for you. Oh yes, Petty does Rock n' Roll as well.
@tompetty1976 I do agree with you...Heck, I've been listeing to Tom Petty since the 80's. I just think his music is in a class by itself . Just brilliant, It matters not to me who influenced him. The USA & GB will always be connected. Cheers.
From the 1st time I heard it stuck in my head....I knew it was Tom Petty but couldn't find his name in the credits on Appaloosa...seen Mudcrutch and took it from there.......Tom Petty thanks for never being stagnant...and for those who have not seen the flick Appaloosa check it out!!!!!!!!!
Beyond the obvious I didn't know much about Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and certainly nothing about Mudcrutch. The other evening I caught 'Running Down a Dream' the 4hr documentary and can safely say that I am now a convert to anything and everything Tom has made. Genius songwriting, great band and great attitude. I'm gutted to have missed out for nearly 40 years but am sure as hell making up for lost time!
"I got a dream that don't ever come true." That lyric was for me... I have insane, epic dreams all the time... and then I return to slackerdom. Ha ha ha.
'member Mudcrutch from my college days in G'ville. Local band way back then, seen often at Dub's.
Hey, speakin' of Dub's. . . Wet T-Shirt nights were such a gas! Smoke way too much weed & Hookup with Black pro stripper from Atlanta (yeah, she was cheatin' -- but then so was I).
So positive and upbeat those long ago days . . . what happened?
@sallymaggiespotty It is truly a big fucking disgrace to even mention that little pricks name in the presence of legends like Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
@sallymaggiespotty Ok, what I don't understand is, that how could you even put on a difference between a gay, feminine, asshole, bastard and with a music/rock god ? This I really don't understand. Will never to be honest. Yor values must be somewhere in the spheres I think... but nothing to do with the real life for sure.
Tom, I'm a working musician in the Atlanta area. Bought this Mudcrutch album when it first came out. This song really struck me to my soul and I finally got around to doing it at my nightly gig. Figured it might not stick with the crowd; maybe not be recognized. I was wrong. People from every walk of life in my crowd stop and listen, identify with your song, stop me afterwords to comment. They immediately know it's you. Thank you Tom; beautiful song.
I cannot think of a better song that came out in the yr of 2010. PERFECT for the movie APPALOOSA. thanks for the video. I love the lead riff on the telecaster. Damn....petty on bass....who wouldve thought so?

Love you Tom! One of the great artists of our time as well as a strong individual who did not allow the corporate fucks tell him what to do or how to do it and stayed strong and true to his art! Awesome!
When Tom and the boys decide to do a world tour they should take the Mudcrutch boys with them and alternate the show between Heartbreakers and Mudcrutch music. What a concert that would be. Don't scare easy....for no one!!! Great lyrics

Love you Tom! One of the great artists of our time as well as a strong individual who did not allow the corporate fucks tell him what to do or how to do it and stayed strong and true to his art! Awesome!

Tom is like the hippie uncle of Rock n' Roll. A true musical genius.

When Tom and the boys decide to do a world tour they should take the Mudcrutch boys with them and alternate the show between Heartbreakers and Mudcrutch music. What a concert that would be. Don't scare easy....for no one!!! Great lyrics
