The anime ending is dissapointing and not conclusive at all, at least not as original macross, they should have the balls to finish things with a wedding and a girl weeping. The way love triangles end in real life. It was kind of childish ending....and the charachters dont really evolve through the story...oh yeah but who cares about script or charachters when you have the animation and the music and the state of the art production behind.....

@Hematemesis Triangle is resolved in the film version. And the characters definetly evolve through the story, just compare Ranka in final episode to one in first episode! Ditto for Sheryl and hell, Alto too. Ep 23 shows Alto's perception of Frontier colony has completely changed for starters. I recommend waiting for Sayonara no Tsubasa BD/DVD release :)

@ShinRanka Ive only watched the series, and the series ending is dissapointing. Maybe Il give the movie a chance. And, basically what happens is that they had the chance to make a great story but they didnt took risks with the charachters, the Alto-father conflict could have more impact on his further decissions, and again they make stupid moments like putting all of them in high school (duh...) ruining any chance to have some mature approach. Original macross had mature stuff on it.

@Hematemesis I thought Alto's conflict with his father - which is not significant aspect in film version - was subtly portrayed in the series and resolved in quite more daring and mature way than typically in anime. Alto quite simply "grew taller" than his father and was shocked to see it. No shouting matches were needed, no grand conceited drama. As far as "maturity" goes, Frontier series and original are pretty equal in combination of silly and serious. The nature of silly just reflects eras.

@Hematemesis For the record Frontier's handling of themes of music, war, militarism etc. were more seriously handled than in original. There's also dirty political schemes, human hubris and intolerance not to mention array of stuff from Kawamori's rather subtle aspects of Zen philosophy (haragei) contrasted with rather nefarious "Instrumentality" SF themes that could be from Evangelion. There's quite a bit stuff "mature" stuff that does not exist in comparable form in original. I love both.

@Hematemesis The film version of Macross Frontier has in few respects the most grittiest and "mature" storyline in Macross. Only Plus and Zero compare somewhat. Macross 7 of course is silliest and most immature of them all, but after it I'd rank SDF Macross and Frontier series about equal in terms of "maturity" (both are filled with silly shit and goofyness, that's part of Macross charm). Plus, Zero and film version of Frontier are in turn the most "serious" Macross titles, Plus in particular.

@Hematemesis So yeah, you're of course entitled to your opinion and I respect it but I wanted to say neither title is really more "mature" than other. Macross has always been space opera with all the sillyness and ludicruosity that comes with it. In original there's for example the retarded bit of girls shifting pinpoint barrier around to block attacks while screaming suggestive lines. You won't find that kind of sillyness from MF action scenes. In 80s sillyness was just different from today :)

@ShinRanka Macross plus: it has nothing ridiculous about, and it still is the best story of all Macross; because they took the original idea and made a complex love triangle, used good animation and nice sci-fi to establish a story, wich is smart and beautiful. This is just a generic copy in comparison.The only thing I like about Macross frontier is the use of the "minmay attack" wich has been used in real life (korea conflict), and know is a sci-fi real term.

@Hematemesis Plus is the most serious and mature Macross story in terms of tone. Only one that compares to it is Macross Zero. But Frontier was made as "21st Century SDF Macross" for new gen. AND as a love letter for the franchise as whole so of course there are similarities! Macross OVAs like Plus and Zero are always more distinguished while the series (original, 7 and Frontier) follow general basic patterns. Patterns that even Plus relies on heavily. But I respect your opinion so...whatever :)

Anyway, I have hard time taking seriously claim that Frontier "doesn't have soul" - in it appears pretty much all motifs, storytelling concerns etc. that Kawamori has done through his career from Macross to Escaflowne to Arjuna with its hidden environmentalism and even Zen philosophy (haragei is thematically crucial, the Vajra "brain" residing in stomach was no coincidence)... SDF Macross was just as chockful with references + cliches

@Hematemesis For whatever it's worth in Japan Frontier is easily most popular, reverred, renowned and loved Macross since original. Anyway, making vague claim about "lacking soul" is rather silly with anime. Evangelion is probably most heartfelt and "genuine" anime series ever made and yet it's commercial as hell too. SDFM was filled with references and cliches of its own era just like MF is of current one. I think Frontier had great story and more "soul" than most anime I've seen in years.

I really love this song, more or less just as much as I love the original. I find it awesome that the emotional tone behind the lyrics changes so much between the two without changing notes or key. It's also awesome that despite the similarities, the lyrics are polar opposites: Tori no Hito is a peaceful, hopeful song. This, on the other hand, is a proper war song.

Though I do want to know what it is with the japanese and cutting the darkness. That line shows up in every anime song ever.
