I think it doesn't matter what you eat, as long as you stay healthy, doesn't matter if you eat meat or you're vegan. There's downsides to both lifestyles. I don't think either kind of person is smarter than the other, which is an ongoing problem between both sides. Look people, just do you what you want as long as you are comfortable with what you are eating and staying fit and healthy.
It's so true that people don't see me as 'a credible source'. One thing I do is keep a few leaflets (published in glossy colour) to hand to people who ask these questions. It doesn't guarantee that they will believe the information or even read it but it lends a little more authority.
I've not consumed animal products for 34 years (my veganversary is tomorrow) and I've always been a info junky so I know a lot more than most but, like you said, I'm the guy that was drunk last Saturday night! ;)
I must say as wonderful and absolutely crucial as fruits and veggies are to the diet, meat is also a wonderful thing. Just avoid the saturated fats and dairy. Also keep away from sugar, alcohol and caffeine and you'll be doing fine and dandy.
So would you discount the Eskimo's natural diet unhealthy? If so how do you propose they eat in a northern climate? When there is no sun, dark for four months, where do they get vitamin D? The real problem with the modern diet is processed food not meat.
ate fruit/greens/seaweed for six months what i noticed: worsening of my brain fog, dreading walking anywhere when previously i could walk for hours no problem, really struggling on a run, edema in legs when sitting for awhile, loss of muscle tone in abd., and hair loss. after including hemp seeds in my diet (days to a month): fatigue and edema gone, brain fog improving, hair loss continuing, abd. about the same. getting the recommended daily amt. of protein is important.
That is a good advice. Though most of the people would not go and read the book. :-)
When people ask me that question I do not go into explaining, because people that usually ask that question do not want to learn. What they want is to preach and promote their own eating habits as good and yours as bad (at least in my personal experience).
rattle off scientific information!! like doing that, and the reason people don't take many frail skinny raw foodists serisouly with this question is that, well because, they are jsut , frail and skinny, so get ripped and maybe people will beleive
I am too tired of it to answear with any depth that will get a discussion going, so I just say "bananas".
Luckily most people have seen a bodybuilder or two eat a banana right after a workout and know they contain some protein, so their usual response is "Wow that must mean alot of bananas?", wich leaves me to just close off the discussion with a simple "yup" :D
Avoid the master cleanse -- not a great idea. Cayenne + colitis = particularly bad idea. OTOH going raw can be a miracle for people with the conditions you are experiencing. It is definitely worth trying BUT if you have IBS and colitis, you will probably do best if you can get an experienced naturopath, licensed nutritionist or raw food 'lifer' to help you design a plan of action.
The China Study book is what alerted me to the value of plant based protein last year. The scientific info is presented very clearly; it's a good read.
just ask them where a cow gets its protein from? a cow is nothing more than transformed grass..just as easily as a human can be transformed vegetatiion
Argh, you just reminded me of Amway! and Young Living Essential Oils! and and NeoLife and Shaklee.. yes I love to be abused in network marketing.. well i used to
I find that my friends will listen to me and then say, yeah right... then later down the road I find they are into the same things I am.. they just act like they found out on their own.
Yes, I have two degrees, and my family still thinks I am in kindergarten! LOL! There are many sources, but my family is more easily suaded by sources and people who unfortunately confirm what they already believe...I have to trust their own journey...and mine. Sometimes, it isn't about the availability of info, but the openness of the mind...

Try doing Stanley Burroughs "The Master Cleanse". It worked for me.
