I grew up going to Hop Kee and just recently traveled across the country to visit it. It's always the first place I hit for a meal when I'm home. Gotta say, as much as I don't care for Bourdain, I have to agree with him ... nothing takes me back like an egg roll and (veggie) fried rice. And the flounder is a must. Man, it's hard to get myself up those stairs after my nostalgia feast!
@FlushingBoyNY You are obviously haven't been to some of the other places than man. My family (via marriage) is from Guangzhou and we hit up plenty of solid authentic Cantonese food in Chinatown. Just because you haven't been to some of these places doesn't mean they aren't there homie.
That said, I live in Brooklyn's Chinatown (have for some time now). We usually just stick around here for our eats. Best Dim Sum in the city. Yum Cha biatch!
Talk about nostalgiac foods. Both Chris' dishes and Tony's dishes are my chilhood memories. I'd get the crab and that very same fish dish alongside the sweet and sour pork and pork fried rice. Man, I'm craving cheap yet awesome Cantonese food now...
Hop Kee is the sh*t! I see a lot of people have been there too. Funny how when you watch some other vids of other restaurants and there are barely any comments mentioning that they've been there but when it comes to Hop Kee, just about everyone commenting has been going there for years.
Hop Kee is without a doubt, hands down, my favorite restaurant in China town. I've been going there since I was a little boy, same as my father. I'm not sure when the place was built, but my grandfather also went there when he was a young man. I love their food there. Specifically - Spare ribs & black bean sauce, pork chops Peking, Lobster Cantonese style, Flounder Kow, & Deep Fried Scallops w/ Lemon.
Ever since i was a small child, i have always gone to chinatown and always stopped at Hop Kee, this stuff never gets old, from the "open" menu to the phantom menu, all of it is delicious. I see stuff in my college with the chinese takeout, they're not bad, but you can never beat the classic cantonese style.
There's a much wider foodie culture now, but what's being said in this video is true. There was/is the bland menu that's served to white people and anyone stuck up about seeing a head or animal foot. And then there's the real menu, served to Asians who love higher end food.
Technically even the "open" menu stuff ( sweet and sour pork, etc) is actually not bad, going purely by taste IMO. The "phantom" menu stuff, though, especially that crab, though, has no match on the "regular" menu haha. It seems authentic Chinese food is much more accessible in America now than before
My family & I have been enjoying Hop Kee for nearly 40 years now. The address is 21 Mott Street - Chinatown. The house soup is outstanding!!! Everything is delicious especially the fried squid, crabs cantonese style, clams, snails, pan fried flounder, and my fathers favorite a half spring chicken. Hop kee is one of our favorite restaurants. I must tell you, we travel 50 miles to Hop Kee and its worth it! The staff is very friendly and helpful when ordering. Try HOP KEE you'll LOVE IT!
What is the address of this restaurant Hop Kee? Next time I visit New York, I will go there. Is it really delicious or just sweet and sour pork for foreigners? A lot of them only know sweet and sour pork.
OMG you gotta go there! HOP KEE is amazing!! It's always crowded, people line up outside the store holding numbers LOL. I've tried the snails too LOL. One of my favorites. Everything is delicious! It's a very popular restaurant!
after 20 years of going to Hop Kee, one of these days i'm gonna have to brave it and order something from the phantom menu lol But of course, i need to be there with a friend who knows what they have.

@cowboynemo May be good, but not cheap. You'll easily drop $100.00 for a family of 4.
