I take it then you don't use many electrical appliances? Shortwave radios can be battery powered or by clockwork, and Internet access can be via wireless to a off site router, but food is another matter. I live in a place in the mountains where the power goes out for 1-3 times per winter season for 1-4 day periods. Been here for 11 years-- might buy a generator soon.
If the power goes out like you say, it may be RESET TIME. Your bank will be closed for the weekend and you will be notified where to go to get your food and gas coupons. I wouldn't want to own any more silver and gold than I can safely carry in a backpack with my food, 9mm, and water filter.
Here's an idea. Silver bullets.

Ha!! I worked for an electronics exec who had a home high in the mountains above Silicon Valley. I was working for him on 911. We stood in shock as the towers were smoking.
Anyway, when a power outage hit the area, his son-in-law down the road had to come up to take a shower before going to this law office because there were no lights at the house. My customer has the largest self-contained solar system in the county. His system went down, so the attorney went back home to shower in the dark.

Wouldn't you be better buying photovoltic panels, and some small wind turbines, and if you have a stream/river near your home that is constant a micro water turbine, to be come electricty self sufficent. Use what nature provides.

35 years ago, when you could buy a decent small house for 20-30k, I was in college developing my personal skills. I didn't look at college as a place to accumulate facts and social connections, I looked at it as a safe place to grow-- like MOT points out, "a place to begin a quest for truth".
After college I learned a trade. Between school and the practical application of the thinking skills I acquired at college, I discovered a much simpler, yet challenging life.

During a power outage, or an economic crash, I will be very valuable to those who can't do things for themselves. Without power it will be even more frustrating for people who have lived in luxury. They'll need people like me to help them. People will be in dire need of people they can trust to come to their property to fix things; scrounge up parts; make thing secure, etc.
A trusted handyman is a valuable person. Every woman needs a handyman.

I take it then you don't use many electrical appliances? I am thinking of a fridge for storing perishable food, clothes washing you can do by hand, warmth via wool clothes, and or open fire you can live without TV. Shortwave radios can be battery powered or by clockwork, and Internet access can be via wireless to a off site router, but food is another matter. I'm just thinking to be free of the syustem, you have to be independent of the system as much as you can be. Peace.

Some say there is no universal truth. Some say in order to find an objective truth you must first look into the core institutions which can help examine the human behavior; which are government, religion, philosophy, psychology and yes, even drugs. The only way to come up with a true objective view for reality is through your own subjective seeing self. My dad used to drive down to Stow, MA in the late 60s - early 70s to pick apples, plums etc.
I just got him in touch with the owner of the orchard who just turned 85 and still helps out with the harvest.
My dad said that it was one of the most beautiful places he has ever been. (Lake Louise being number 1.)

They are going up again here in Britain as well. 'Gas' and Diesel are both now over £1 a litre again. Plus oil is going up as well. China is building up its infastructure, as its exports % go down, and that is sucking in oil to power it.

Here in the UK our banks along with those in Europe,have made a collective decision to keep all loans on their books at face value.If they are non performing,they,the banks,take euity stakes.How can a recovery occur with no washout of dead loans and zombie businesses allowed to ride the taxpayers' wallets?We are a far cry from green shoots of recovery.

I heard - the next economic problem will be the "commercial real estate crisis."
This time it will involve the smaller local banks who made a lot of loans to community business people. Businesses fail, vacate office buildings, commercial loans go bad. People are investing in stocks again because they don't want to be left behind, but Dow has strong resistance at 9,000. Gold Stocks went up a lot when the Dow went up abd will go down with Dow too! Anyway, things don't look good, do they?

I am sceptical on the whole global warming issue, but I still like the idea of going green for other reasons like the ones above.

I noticed many elderly people with dementia escaping from the care facility because they are now under staffed, we got three calls out last week alone also, more people have been hitting QFC & Safeway parking lots with cardboard signs asking for help. I know its bad when it hits a small town like this one.
