Great video Kristen! You are fun and if we lived near each other we'd be quite the team. Thank you, I was a bit stuck without my propagation books and this was a big help. I think I'll go grow some figs.
i have always thought that willows never grew anything underneath them- so using willow water would decrease liklihood of hormonal root boost... (and other cuttings not doing well) I guess it is spring by the lambs-
thanks so much for the clear informative accurate information.
I myself also grow and I do sell Unusual Fig Trees in the UK.I own a 25 acre Fig Farm in Portugal with 2,000 Fig Trees.
Do email me with your requests, I can ship .The trees are under 2kgs.in weight for shipping.,usually about 2 years old and well formed. Now the Fig Trees are without leaves. So now is the time to buy and plant.......
the other half and i are renting at the moment and the owners have a beautiful fig tree with amazing sweet fruits out the back. we're building a new house at the moment, and u want to take the fig with me, so just short of pulling it out... i have now learnt how to take a cutting and will do so this weekend, it isnt quite spring but i hope it'll do. if not i can always try again
@androshi Hi, I have just spent the last year at college doing Hort. We experimented with a number of methods from shop bought root hormone like Clonex to using Manuka honey to Coles honey. Clonex worked, Manuka didn't but Coles honey did. There are variables in cuttings. What doesn't work at one time of the year, may work at another time. Of course, a moist hothouse is extremely helpful.
Thanks for the great tip on willow water!! In addition to being natural, it's free :) I do have questions though,. Why do you take twigs from the mother tree, instead of sprouts near the base? Does it make a difference?
@professorLing hi there, yep we're australian, and you could use any propagation dip, but something natural (like willow water) avoids synthetic hormones so that's what we use.
Thank you very much for presenting such an informative video. Great quality presentation. Living in a zone 5 area (Canada) and wanting to have a taste of fresh figs I got a miniature fig tree that I potted and keep indoors in winter. It did produce several (I was surprised for a tree that was barely 16 inches (40 cm) tall). So your video shows me that it shouldn't be too difficult to reproduce. Hopefully I'll have just as much luck.
"Commercial rooting preparations contain a synthetic form of indolebutyric acid (IBA) and growing tips of willows contain high concentrations of IBA, depending on the quantity used and length of time you soak them. Any willow (Salix) tree or shrub species will work.
Willow water:
Steep twigs in a half-gallon of boiling water overnight. Refrigerated liquid kept in a jar with a tight-fitting lid will remain effective up to two months."
Thanks for a video that is both enjoyable and informational. I wish to take cuttings of fig trees that have been in the family for over a hundred years and which orginated in Italy, in order to transplant them to a new home. This video is perfect!
I believe that you used weeping willow leaves. Could you use other willows, such as the contorted willow? Thanks you are great! very warm and friendly.
ordinary riverbank willows are great but I just start fig clippings taken in Feb/Mar in a bucket of water. No willow at all.
I discovered this by accident when I left clippings out by the road for a friend. They were in a bucket, it rained, she forgot to collect them, and several other people got fig trees.
I agree with using willow, but it often isn't necessary. Grape clippings start in buckets without willow, too.
sweet video. I feel smarter after watching that. you deliver it well, great on camera too. makes me wana go plant sum myself. thanx for the post, keep it up.
I enjoyed your video very much.. Could you please tell me if I where to make that tea using the willow tree leaves must it be used immediately or can once mixed with water be stored in a refrigerator and if so do you have any idea how long it would still be useful?
Appreciate an answer if possible. I want to try your method out. I love your singing as well.
Helpful info and I like your carefree style.. very upbeat thx

kristen how are your fig trees? i see that the video was 2 years ago-did they root well?
why couldnt you just put them in a glass jar with water too see their roots grow?
i did read and seen that honey does work, but i was also told that the environment has to be like a moist hot house. we need to see more from you.

Nice video. Thanks for posting. Also, honey works as a great rooting "hormone" replacement. just dip the branches in honey, then plant.

Hi Jack,
We made a root hormone with willow leaves, but left it out at room temperature for about
week, and now it smells like a swamp so I covered and put outside - can we still use it?
We live in las vegas and willow trees are hard to find.
thanks in advance,
