This seems very fishy to me. What are they trying to accomplish by doing this? What will it get them? Removed equipment for the next drill?

The BP guy explains that if they remove the BOP before taking the pipe out, the pipe would be attached to the BOP and they would have to lift the BOP the length of the pipe i.e. 3,500 feet.
Therefore I believe BP wants to remove the BOP from the well, which is understandable for a well not being exploited. BP prolly wants to use the BOP somewhere else.
